After an update by Mcafee started getting alerts that I am affected by spy-agent.bf.dldr with com4.exe files. Now I am getting virus alerts such as jo2ptksd.exe, x8csoge.exe. all files cannot be deleted and I am stumped and hoping you can help.

Hi touranagram and welcome to Malware Removal! :)

I'd like to get some files scanned.
  • Go to VirusTotal
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the Search Box at the top of the page:
  • C:\Program Files\Windows NT\com4.exe
  • Click on the Send button
  • Please post the results in your next reply.
Do the same for this file:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Services\com4.exe

Hope this helps, I think its most frustrating that Mcafee say there is an issue but cannot delete the files, what are they and are they needed. I have tried to delete them but failed then I started getting virus messages.

Can I get one more more log from you and then we can set about removing them...
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
  • Press the Save list button.
  • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
  • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file back here.

Thanks for that. The following fix may take some time, but there is no rush.

Lets begin...

1. Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixServices.bat. Please save it on your desktop.
@echo off
sc stop NetIxl
sc delete NetIxl
sc stop UpdKem
sc delete UpdKem
exit

Double click FixServices.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.

If you are having problems creating the file, a step by step visual tutorial by Nellie2 for making a batch file can be found here.

2. Open HijackThis
- Click the Do a system scan only button
- Check the following entries below (if present)

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =

Hi touranagram

Item 6 could not delete the com4.exe files from either location as it came back with "cannot delete com4. cannot find specific file, make sure you specify the correct path and filename.

Lets do this...

Please download Killbox and save it to your desktop.

Next, copy everything in the Quote box below by pressing Ctrl+C
C:\Program Files\Windows NT\com4.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Services\com4.exe

Next, open Killbox
Go to File tab and select Paste from Clipboard
Select the Delete on Reboot option
Select All Files
Now click on the Red Circle with the White X
Press Yes to reboot your computer.

I am now stuck as I cannot get Kaspersky online scannr to get past the acceptance of the ActiveX it seems to stall, with no activity.

Lets try running this online scan...

Please do an online scan with Panda ActiveScan

- Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log

Before posting the new HijackThis log, please update Java. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove the following...
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

I think we are there!!!

The com4.exe is located in

C:\Program Files\Windows NT\com4.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Services\com4.exe we tried to remove them but they are back

but I think you have cracked it :D as McAfee seems to be happier now with no messages about Trojans and viruses on start up and after about 5 mins. Speed was never an issue just the constant and worrying warning messages.

This has been a big warning to me to be more careful with what I accept to load. My normal measures of virus scan, Ad-aware and Spybot are not enough can you recommend any other actions?

We have added some software to my machine can I delete this in a few days when its settled?

C:\Program Files\Windows NT\com4.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Services\com4.exe we tried to remove them but they are back

Try deleting them in Normal Mode and see if you have any success. If not, we'll need to try another Tool becuase those files need to go.

Also, go to C:\!Killbox (if it exists) and tell me what's inside, if anything.

I'm glad to hear to things are back to Normal. I will give you some prevention tips but lets concentrate on removing those com4.exe files first. I'll let you know when you can delete the software/tools we downloaded.

Cannot delete the com4.exe files normally it says they do not exist. I am sure I check earlier today after the kill box and they had a different date a time. Is that possible?

The log file in c:!killbox has

Pocket Killbox version 2.0.0.881
Running on Windows XP as Dave(Administrator)
