You're welcome...

About the homepage issue....have you tried to change it in Internet Explorer by going to a page you want to be your homepage, then click Tools>>Internet Options. Under the general tab in the homepage section, click use current then apply then OK out.

What happens when you do that?

I don't see Ad-watch or Ad-aware installed on your system in your HJT log...did you have it installed in the past?

Let's take a look at your uninstall list:

Open HijackThis, click Open Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Well, you have both adaware AND Spybot on your system, and both of these programs have settings that can preclude your changing of your homepage depending on how they were/are set up.

This first link below takes you to the Lavasoft site and shows how to manipulate AdWatch to allow homepage changes (if this is causing your problem):

http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=169

With regard to Spybot, this is how you can can check to see the settings in that program that may be blocking homepage changes:

There is an option within Spybot that sets a flag which prevents your home page from being changed. To see if this flag is set, go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced Mode > Tools > IE Tweaks. There are three "Miscellaneous locks" on Spybot's IE tweaks page:

  • Lock Hosts file read-only as protection against hijackers
  • Lock IE start page setting against user changes (current user)
  • Lock IE control panel against opening from within IE (current user)

If the "Lock IE start page setting against user changes (current user)" is checked, uncheck it and see if you can change your home page."

Try these things first and let me know if this fixes the problem with changing your homepage...

I don't have acess to ad-watch in ad aware because I have a version that don't use that. For spyboot it was already ok...

It is weird.

OK....

Since I'm not standing over your shoulder watching what happens when you try to change your homepage in IE, I'm going to need some more specific information as to what exactly is happening when you try to change the homepage other than "it doesn't work".

Are you an adminstrator on the computer or does your account have administrator privileges? If not, the change the homepage option may be disabled to you.

If you are an administrator or do have administrator privileges, then what exactly happens when you try to change the homepage in IE as I directed before? Can you do the steps, but the homepage doesn't change? does the homepage change only to change back to msn after a reboot? Are the use current and apply options 'greyed out' and unavailable to you?

If you have already ruled out adaware and spybot as the culprits by following my prior instructions, let's do something else...:

1. Download the Hoster Here
Please do not use program yet

Unzip Hoster to your desktop

Open up the Hoster program.
  • Make sure that the "make hosts writable?" button in the upper right corner is enabled.
  • Click back up Host files
  • then click Restore orginal host files
  • close program

After restoring your hosts file by using the Hoster program, try to change your homepage as I directed before, and if it is not successful, give me the particulars (as you see them to be) as to why you cannot change the homepage.

If this doesn't work, we can try to reset your web settings and follow the MS webpage devoted to this problem, but let's try the steps above first...

ok, I did the step with Hoster but it did the same thing. I can do the steps, but the homepage doesn't change. When I click on the homepage icon or if I oppen a new internet page, my homepage always come back to msn france... Before I install the new internet explorer I did not have that problem.

OK...I've done some more 'searching' on this issue, and I have found a few reports of cases where the Norton Protection Center apparently disabled the IE7 change default home page function. Let's check this out, it's worth a shot....

Open/go to: Norton System Works>>Norton Protection Center>>Web Browsing>>Auto Protect>>Configure Auto Protect>>Homepage Protection.

Then look to see if there is a check in the box labelled "Block all attempts to change my homepage."...if there is, uncheck the box, get out of the program and try to change your homepage.

If you can change your homepage, you can then, if you want, do the same process above and reset the block all attempts to change homepage protection once your new homepage is set.

Let me know if this works....(fingers crossed)!
