WinXP HE SP2 IE 6.0.29, using Google as my Home Page.
I have been advised to seek your expert help please?
My browser appears to have been attacked, my search results, using google always take me to something completely different.
I have used Ad-WareSE, SpywareBlaster,Spybot SD, and Avaste, I also use ZA Free edition.

I was advised to try AVG, with this I found that I have "zlob.atv" as a virus, but try as I have with AVG, it does not remove t"zlob.atv".

Looking in Google for zlob, I was taken to "SpyHunter" I ran this, and also found the zlob file, but when I ran Spybot SD again, this told me that "Spyhunter" was a problem? so I uninstalled that prog.

Here is my Hijacklist: (I hope)

_________________________________
Welcome to the Malware removal forums. I will be more than happy to help you work on your problems.
The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!
Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/l ... areout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Next:
Click Start> Run> type inCMD tap enter key
Copy/Paste: ipconfig /flushdns

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

If you have internet connection problems do this:

Please go to Start -> Control Panel, and choose Network Connections.
Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

I got back to the desktop o.k.

tried to run "inCMD" told it could not be found.
did a search of all files and doc. - nothing found

tried sfc /scannow - it would not run (it normally does)
ran cmd /k chkdsk c: /f - this went o.k.

on restart ran sfc / scannow. this went o.k.
on restart tried to run inCMD but windows could not find it.
here are the two reports that you wanted, and thank you very much for your help.

The File WWW for Apache came as a package from DeveloperSide.net Web-Server, (Apache setup-1.15) it was running o.k. until recently when I attempted to change the password for mysql. I had a few problems with it during the last week, I suppose roughly from the time that my PC started playing up as well, uninstalled and reinstalled two or three times, but I cannot get to change/alter the password.

Thank you once again.

Ok looking good so far. According to your HJT log your start up page should be google.com. You may try and change it if you like. But I'm not concerned with that now. Bigger fish to kill yet. ;)

Thanks for the info on Apache. I have never used it myself and certainly never saw it in that folder. I'm sure it's fine there.

Please run these in the order I suggest.
___________________________________
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files::

Click Start. My Computer.
Select the Tools menu Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Search for and remove
Now I want you to search for and delete the following folder and all it's contents if present. If you need help finding them.
Click start /search/ all files and folders/ look for More advanced options. once in there select the first 3 boxes.
Please just remove the files/folders I listed in BOLD

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdkxj.exe

______________________________
1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

____________________________
Because you mentioned Zlob were going to do a check for something. I don't see any signs of it but lets have a look anyway.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with any others I have asked for in your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • A new HJT log
  • The report from combo fix
  • The report from smitfraud

Reconfigure windows.
Found kdkxj using "Search"- tried to remove it by right clicking, "avaste" opened and recommended removing this file the its "Chest" which I did.
Did a second search, nothing found.

OK looks good.
Just a few optional fixes for you to consider.

____________________________
You have QuickTime running at Startup. This is QuickTime's system tray icon and not necessary for the program to function properly. It is considered to be a resource hog.
You will still be able to start it manually if you need it. You can fix this with HijackThis, but you will need to change the setting in QuickTime
Player itself to keep it from resetting itself.. This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

nwiz.exe /install

nwiz.exe is a part of NVidia's Nview features installable alongside its graphics hardware products.
This application will give the user access to additional features which allow the configuration of up to 32
monitors on a host or to expand the desktop across many monitors. This program is not required to start automatically
as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.
It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

Let me know how things seem to be running now.

While I had a few spare moments to spare, I ran AVG to see how things were getting on.
AVG found that ZLOB has been removed, but indicated a "Trojan DNS changer.gp" it was removed with AVG.
I ran AVG again and nothing was found?

I thought that I shoul;d tell you?

Thank you.

Our mail has crossed.
I have removed (with hijackthis) the two items that you have suggested.

Later today I will do a thorough check with my Anti-virus progs. and then back up my clean system.
AVG tells me that the two viruses that I had in the first instance, have now gone, and I am delighted.

If you could make a final comment about the following, I would be very gratefull.

I have Zone Alarm (free version), Avaste, SpybotSD, SpywareBlaster and Ad-Aware, I check for updates on average once a week, and run a scan.
What is your opinion about the protection that I have, and would you have thought that these would have alerted me about the two viruses that I had i.e. zlob and dnschanger.gp?

Great news ! Image

Your log now appears to be clean.

Lets do a few things to tidy up.
Please do these in the order I suggest!

___________________________________
If we have set your computer to see all files and folders we must reprotect them.

UNDO SHOW ALL FILES
click on the My Computer icon.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
After the new window appears select the View tab.
Deselect in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
Deselect the checkbox labeled Show hidden files and folders.
Select the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
Replace the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
Press the Apply button and then the OK .
Now many important files are safe.

Download and install CCleaner from here.
NOTE: Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option .

If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for Cookies is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.

Now open the program and click on Run Cleaner
( Do not use the Issues block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).

You may opt out of cleaning cookies. If you clean them alls you will have to do is retype names and passwords for places you visit on the net 1 time.
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for Cookies is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla
I clean all my cookies out from time to time. It's not that big a deal if you remember passwords.

Please create a 'clean' System Restore Point:
The reason for doing this is in case you need system restore you don't put back all we just took out.
Right click My Computer
Then Propeties then system restore
Place a check mark by turn off system restore
Click APPLY
Windows will give you a warning click yes
REBOOT

Now go right back to the same place and unchecksystem restore
Click APPLYand OK
