Lots of pop-ups

Hi, Tried all of the tricks in my bag and can't get rid of this. Lot's of pop-ups in IE7 - heavy.com,vortal.com,dittodomains.com,aol.com,exacttarget.com, etc

Have tried adaware, symatec Av, safety.live.com, spybot. They all find remanents and remove. I notice 2 suspicious BHO's tcblkosj.ddl, vcbhasst.dll - disabled them and they got reenabled the next day. Also two suspicious extensions - research and something about resolving connection problems

Also, I removed a couple of other BHO's last week when the browser quit working - sorry, can't recall what they were

Hi Navigator,

Lucky guess about the Dr. part - it was just a take off on an old line from the movie Airplane! And you are correct about the online games - two teenage boys use this laptop on a regular basis - usually no trouble and I run a variety of checks on a regular basis. From the looks of what you had me check it looks like whatever happened was installed on Nov 10, 9:17 pm (netverchk,italfds) - can you tell me which game created these so we can avoid in the future?

I did as you suggested and the logs are later on but there are a few buts that may be relevant:

#4 - J2SE (all 4) could not be removed in Safe mode. I followed the rest of the instructions and removed and rebooted again after I was back in normal mode. Something about the windows installer not available in safe mode

#5 - tcblkosj and vcbhasst were not found and therefore not deleted but the rest were

#6 353MB (!) were removed. Also, there was no prompt to save passwords but that's no big deal

After I had completed these steps, I rebooted several times and each time was very (!) slow and all the desktop and control panel icons were rebuilt each time. I finally logged off, shut down and restarted and all the icons were still there but startup took >5 min. (HJT took about 4 minutes to run instead of the normal 10 sec) I did a task manager and the most misbehaving task was guard.exe which I determined to be part of AVG so I uninstalled (it was running in the tray) and bebooted again. Same result with a long startup and task manager showed wmiprvse.exe to be the cpu intensive process. I think this is part of Windows so I left it alone. Current state is I haven't had any popups, new BHO's haven't show up but it takes 10 min or so for a complete startup compared to the previous 30 sec.

An Update

Used IE for about 1/2 hr this am and no popups so far. Also, boot time was back to normal - perhaps MS Update or nav was running before and I didn't notice it. We'll see what happens....
