Unread postby BRTrouble » November 21st, 2006, 12:58 am

Our computer is running extremely slow, not only on the internet, but when running anything else like MSOffice. It is also subject to freezing up. We have removed an old firewall called Freedom that was always trying to access a dead web page, and have installed Norton Internet Security. We have scanned using Norton, AdAware, C Cleaner and Trojan Hunter. All found a few non critical things but we are still having the troubles. Our latest scan is shown below.

Thank you.

Hello BRTrouble

I hope the following information will help you. I do not know if you have already done any of the recommendations or not.

I would recommend that you defragment your drives.

Also you may want to install more memory. I had problems with the first computer we bought freezing up and soon discovered that when I was online, it took a lot of RAM. In fact it was through PCPitstop that I discovered I needed more RAM which I added and it cleared up my problems. I really did not know much about computers then but I was able to add the memory myself with instructions and the manual.

If you order memory from somewhere though, be sure and talk to the business first. Another time I ordered memory online through a website and with specifications I had for the memory. There was something about density that I did not know and the added memory did not work. I called the business and was able to return it but they told me I should have called and talked to someone first to get the right memory and it would have saved me trouble.
======
Disk Defragmenter

To open Disk Defragmenter, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.Use Analyze to determine if your system needs to be defragmented. Please select Defragment if it does.

Your bad drivers:
SiS 650 Display adapter
SiS PCI IDE controller
Epson Perfection 1260 Scanner
Lucent Win Modem
SiS 900 Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adaptor
HP Deskjet 960 Printer
USB Printing support

From the PCPitstop results you have a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion Desktop. I would recommend that you go to the HP website and see if you can locate the drivers there.

I would recommend that you update your Java to patch up security holes.
Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

I hope this provides you with information that may help with solving your problems. I am guessing your problems are not malware related on the basis of the scans that you said that you have run.
