Hi Dave and welcome to the forum.

Please rename HijackThis. Navigate to HijackThis.exe and right-click on it and rename it to something like HJT.exe

----------

Please download SmitfraudFix (c) S!Ri
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/p ... ssutil.htm

----------

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

----------

We need an Uninstall_List from HijackThis
  • Start HijackThis and click on Open Misc Tools section
  • Look for and click on Open Uninstall Manager...
  • Look to the right and click on Save As..
  • Save it to your desktop and copy the contents of that to me
----------

Please reply back with (some logs may get cut off when you include it in one reply. Therefore please post more than one reply if needed):
  • The rapport log from option one
  • The log from vundofix.txt
  • The uninstall list from HJT
  • And a fresh HJT log

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your logs. Can you also provide the uninstall_list as mentioned in my previous post.

Please reply to this thread only to avoid confusion for me and yourself. Once you posted me the uninstall list I shall reply back with a fix.

Hi,
  • Start HijackThis (or in your case HJT as we renamed it) and click on Open Misc Tools section
  • Look for and click on Open Uninstall Manager...
  • Look to the right and click on Save As..
  • Save it to your desktop and copy the contents of that to me

If you performed this before. It will be where you saved it. But that is how to create an uninstall_list.

As to reaching me. You can reach me in this thread as I receive notifications when you or someone has replied. No help will be offered anywhere else ie, Private messages or e-mail.

Hi Dave,

That is the same HJT log you sent me earlier (the times are the same).

We are not after a HJT log but an uninstall_list log. Please read the instructions carefully in my previous post.

I am sorry to be such a pain but I am trying to start again but cannot fined 'HiJackThis.exe' on my computer. Also the SmitfraudFix folder is not readily openable, but I have unzipped a related file and found it. Am I correct in this?
I have run VundoFix again and it reports that it cannot find any infected files
Please advise
Iam still being harried by the pop-up

Hello David.

Andy will be unavailable for the next few days, so I'm here to cover for him if that is OK with you. If you'd prefer to wait for Andy, I'm sure he'll reply as soon as he is able. Let me know.

You renamed HiJackThis.exe to HJT.exe, so that is why you cannot find HiJackThis.exe on your computer. Just substitute HJT.exe for any instructions given to run HiJackThis.exe. Does this make sense? Then follow the instructions to generate the uninstall list that Andy gave you previously.

Anyway, let's start cleaning you computer....I'm not sure what you mean by the 'smitfraudfix' is not readily openable; you seemed to have had no problem opening it previously and generating the report after selecting option 1. The report states that smitfraudfix is located at C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\SmitfraudFix ...so it should be on your desktop to double-click and open when I ask in the instructions below.

1. You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Post back with the C:\rapport.txt file and a new HJT log....and if you can get the HJT uninstall list (this is a different log than you've been posting), that would help too...

There will be more to do.

I'm not sure I know what you mean....

By the looks of your log, you apparently ran the smitfraudfix 'clean' option. But I need to see the C:\rapport.txt file to see what was done.

Navigate to C:\rapport.txt using Windows Explorer (right-click start and select explore, then look on the C: drive), open it and copy and paste the contents here.

With regard to the error you are getting when starting up and the missing file/component, that should be fixed when we are done cleaning. The 'file' is missing, but the registry entry is still present (we haven't fixed the registry entry with HJT yet...but we will) so the computer is still looking for the file.

I'll keep trying to make this as simple as I can. For right now, get me the C:\rapport.txt file results and paste them here and then we'll continue...

Hello dave....

No, that's the log from smitfraudfix option 1 which lists the 'files found'....not the 'cleaning' part of the fix option 2 which should list the 'files deleted'.

Did you do the cleaning set of instructions (smitfraudfix option 2 ran in safe mode) like I asked before? I believe you did based on your HJT log (the smitfraud stuff has been removed) but I need to see the C:\rapport.txt file.

Did you understand my prior set of instructions as to how to find this file and copy/paste the results?
