Malware disabled my Firewall

Unread postby lamaxx » October 8th, 2006, 3:19 pm

Hi,

My PC is currently infected with some kind of malware that continually disables my firewall, and hijacks my browser.

I scanned the system multiple times (in regular and safe mode) with McAfee VirusScan, Windows Defender, AdAware SE Personal, e-wido AntiSpyware, TrojanHunter, SpyHunter, CWShredder, plus Panda ActiveScan Pro (I subscribed just for this): with almost every scan they have found something, but something else reappears the next time.

Every once in a while I have been able to get the Firewall to kick in at startup, only to become disabled in a matter of seconds. When I try to enable it myself, I get a message that the Security Center could not turn on Windows Firewall. In addition, the Security Center does not recognize McAfee as it used to. IE often crashes when I start it the first time, and subsequently keeps being redirected to a random number of ad pages - including many supposedly legit ones such as Lycos or Ebay.

At some point I deleted the WindowsFirewall keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft and HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft, but it didn't seem to make any difference. I also manually removed an incredible amount of IP addresses and domains hidden inside a registry key for "trusted" sites.

Anyway, I am including the Hijackthis log, hoping that someone out there might be able to help me. Thanks in advance!

Riccardo

Hi lamaxx,

Welcome to the MalWare Removal forums! I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

In order to help me help you, please observe the following while we work:
  1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't continue, we don't want to start all over again!
  2. Understand that cleaning your computer can sometimes take multiple passes/posts,
and it's important to follow the steps as listed including re-running scans as listed
  3. Please reply to this thread, do not start another.

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly

Hello lamaxx,

You are infected

You are running SpyHunter (or Spykiller). This is a program that advertises itself as removing spyware, but it apparently gives false positives to get you to buy it and then does a miserable job. Some even think that it may install malware. I recommend that you remove it. See Spyware Warrior Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products and Web Sites for details about these programs:

SpyHunter

SpyKiller
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I will need you to uninstall ewido 4.0 there is a newer verison with a new name AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5. Please do not install the new one yet I have it listed in the steps below to reinstall and how its needs to be setup.

Add/Remove Programs
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following:

    ewido
    SpyHunter
(If you decide to uninstall it)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We will need to disable programs that interfer with fix.

Please disable Windows Defender Real Time Protection as it may interfere with the fix. To disable Windows Defender:

  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • Close Windows Defender

Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.
--------------

Disable Trojan Hunter Guard
Go to TrojanHunter Guard in the lower right corner of your screen. It is a light blue magnifying glass icon with a red handle. Right click it and select Settings. Uncheck Load at startup and Enabled.
-------------

If you did not uninstall SpyHunter It will have to be disabled too

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next do the following:
1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
  1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  2. Double-click on the My Computer icon (or click Start, then select My Computer)
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
  5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,wuqtuwo.exe
    O2 - BHO: SSL encrypt - {746455FE-D059-47e7-AF0E-140E03F5A447} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsz25.dll
    O2 - BHO: Banner Rotator - {E954DB82-1533-4714-92F2-59C98D5C18CC} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\brrotate.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [adstart] "iexplore.exe" "http://iesettingsupdate"

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use Explorer to navigate to and delete the following files (if they are present) only what is in red:

Files:

  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuqtuwo.exe
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsz25.dll
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\brrotate.dll
