Hello dkwright and welcome to Malware Removal,

Download haxfix.exe
and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
  • Checkmark "Create a desktop icon"
  • Click "Next"
  • When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed
  • Click "Finish"

A red "dos window" (dos box) will open with options:
1. Make logfile
2. Run auto fix
3. Run manual fix
E. Exit Haxfix

  • Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter
  • Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open: haxlog.txt
  • Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread. (c:\haxfix.txt)

Removal of Trojan PWS-Goldun

Unread postby dkwright » September 29th, 2006, 3:16 pm

Thanks for your reply.
Something I didn't mention in my original post is that I am finding it extremely difficult to access the internet via my infected PC (this post and the first one come from my laptop).
Could I access the internet using 'Safe Mode with Networking' on my PC?
I note you suggest downloading 'haxfix.exe' - could I download it to my laptop, copy it to CD (laptop has no floppy drive) and then run the program from the CD on my PC in 'Safe Mode'?

Try that please. Please try to avoid the Safemode with Networking for now though.

Clean.bat runs automatically after reboot in normal mode.
If the computer reboots in safe mode it does not run. To complete the cleaningprocess in safe mode, you'll need to doubleclick on c:\clean.bat

Option 2 autofix

  • Open this folder program files > haxfix and double click on fix.bat (or double click on fix.bat desktop icon)
  • Close all other open windows since this step requires a reboot
  • Select option 2. Run auto fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter
If an infection is found, you'll get a message to close all other open windows.

  • Close all open windows except the red dos window from haxfix and then press Enter
  • The computer will reboot
  • After reboot a logfile will open > (c:\haxfix.txt)
  • Post the contents of that logfile along with a new HijackThis log.

Removal of Trojan PWs-Goldun

Unread postby dkwright » October 2nd, 2006, 3:08 pm

Thanks for your most recent set of instructions.
However, I would be most grateful if you clarify a couple of points for me, please.

Firstly, do I run clean.bat before Option 2 autofix or do I run Option 2 autofix instead of clean.bat?
Secondly, if I need to run clean.bat, where do I find it?

Thanks

Can you use normal mode?

I am sorry to be confusing. If you can use normal mode, you do not need to worry about the C:\clean.bat. Just ignore the first couple sentences about the clean.bat.

I'll try to run Option 2 Autofix in Normal mode. If that fails, I'll get back to you.
Do I also run HijackThis in Normal mode as well?

I have just tried running my PC in Normal mode but all I end up with is a blank screen. Consequently, I guess I'll have to run it in Safe Mode, so perhaps you could reiterate your instructions regarding clean.bat and HijackThis.

How long has it been since you have been unable to boot into normal mode with this computer?

Removal of Trojan PWS-Goldun

This is the first time I haven't been able to go in to Normal Mode, though since the infection has been detected, most times I've been booting into Safe Mode. However, so days ago, when in Normal Mode, I found I couldn't open applications by double clicking the icons on the Desktop.

Let's backtrack a little. I am concerned about the problems with normal mode and the desktop. Can you do a system restore to a period before the desktop problem? Then
do the following:

I like this scan because you can download it and run it on another computer without being connected to the Internet.
Close the pop-up windows asking you to buy it to clean your system. I just want the information from the bottom portion of the window.

STEP 1.
======
MWAV Scan
Please download MWAV to a convenient location.
This scan only produces a report, it doesn't clean your system. I will analyze the report and recommend a course of action depending on the results.
This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.

Double-click on mwav.exe.
Put a check next to the below items before scanning:
  • Memory
  • Startup Folders
  • Drive - All Local Drives
  • Folder - then click "browse" to change the directory to C: (default is C:\Windows)
  • Registry
  • System Folders
  • Services
  • Include Sub-Directory
  • Scan All Files

Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the Scan button. This typically will take hours to complete.

**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run until it says it's complete.

On the bottom portion of the window, you will see the lower panel where MWav is listing "infected items", please highlight everything in that lower panel and copy them by holding CTRL + C then paste it here. The whole log will be extremely BIG so there is no way to post the log. I just need the infected items list.

Also post a hijackthis log.

Removal of Trojan PWS-Goldun

Unread postby dkwright » October 3rd, 2006, 10:31 am

During my initial investigations into the removal of this trojan, one recurring piece of on-line advice I encountered was to disable system restore, as infected files could be hidden by the restore facility. So I'm afraid that the system restore facility is disabled on my PC, with the loss of restore points.
