Viruses and malware reappear upon boot

Unread postby Barb » May 7th, 2005, 4:42 pm

I was using McAfee and Ad-Aware before the attacks started 2 weeks ago and since have added Spybot, Spyware Blaster, and Hijackthis. Each time I re-boot, everything reappears, including \windows\system32\installer_MARKETING18.exe and wrapperouter.exe which are both infected with the Generic Downloader.aa virus and both are detected and deleted by McAfee, and tons of malware and adware stuff keeps reappearing. Ad-Aware and Spybot find and fix them, but re-booting brings them back.
This is the hijackthis log file. PLEASE HELP ME...I've run McAfee, Ad-Aware, and Spybot several times with no permanent success.

Barb,

Hello! and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.

===============

Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:

1. Click "Free Online Scan".
2. Click "Scan now, it's free".

It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down:

1. Select all available drives.
2. Check(tick) "Auto Clean".
3. Click "Scan".

When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

BetterInternet
ShopatHomeSelect Agent

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

If you dont already have it Download AdAware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

If you don't already have it, let's go to Lavasoft's VX2 Cleaner web-page, and follow the instructions to download and install the utility.

-

Next, run AdAware SE Personal, then:

1. Click "Add-Ons".
2. Double-click "VX2 Cleaner"
3. Click "Ok", to "Execute this tool".
4. If nothing is found, click "Ok", then exit the program.

(or)

4. If VX2 has been found on your system, click "Clean System"
5. Then when it's complelely done, reboot your computer.
6. Repeat steps 1-4 again.

Be sure to follow any instructions it might give while using it.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\psoft1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\SahAgent.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

When your done, rescan your system and make sure the following isn't present:

N3 - Netscape ... 5CSBWeb_01.src (or) 5CSBWeb_02.src

If it is, then fix that entry again; sometimes it'll take more than one pass. The actual entry is ok, and won't be deleted, it's the java wrapper marked in red that needs to be removed.

Everything seemed to go smoothly. When i went to virusscan.jotti.org and scanned the file c:\windows\system32\cyygwbsp.exe, I got the following message: "The file is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file."

Thank you so much for your help.
Here's the new log:

Hey Barb,

Copy this to a notepad file for reference

Let's continue on with the fix...

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

c:\progra~1\Support.com\client\bin\tgcmd.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs

Regarded as Spyware (known to report information back to the company see here - http://startup.iamnotageek.com/srch-server.vbs.html

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cyygwbsp] c:\windows\system32\cyygwbsp.exe

Did you place these in your Trusted Zone? (If not check them also)

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.wellsfargo.com

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Hi Bertha,
Everything is running much better. You're amazing!
I have only one pop-up window so far today, and that is http://www.nuker.com. Oops, I just had another one. This one has url ~http:static.eqwn.net-hdus and in the window it is hanging up on "Loading", which then goes to http://www.nuker.com where it advertises a solution for malware!

After we're done with this, I have a question about good practices for maintaining a clean machine in the future. I have been using McAfee Virus Scan for years, which apparently doesnt protect me from trojans. I have been using Ad-Aware for several months, which apparently doesnt protect me from malware. During this process with HijackThis, I downloaded and installed Spybot, SpywareBlaster, TrojanHunter Scanner, CleanIt, and HijackThis. What should be my standard operational proceedure for using all these tools?

Hey Barb,

I take it that you want the O15 lines to saty then,

I see no problems with your Hijackthis Log but before I give the All Clean lets try and tackle those pop ups.

Have you tried downloading a pop up blocker, such as Yahoo toolbar from their web site. (My college relies on Yahoo Toolbar to do its work for them)

Try here

http://uk.toolbar.yahoo.com/

Of this fails to help then we can look deeper into your system

Please let me know how things are now

Hey Barb,

Noticed a line in your Hijackthis Log that I overlooked earlier that needs removing (thanks to 3162) - I apologise for not seeing it

Run Hijackthis and put a check mark next to the following:

O16 - DPF: {2646205B-878C-11D1-B07C-0000C040BCDB} (NSIEMisc Class) - file://F:\autorun\x86\bin\nskey.dll

With all windows closed click "FIX"

Tell me how things are running now

By Jove, I think we've done it!

That last one, file://F:\autorun\x86\bin\nskey.dll, seems to have been the final bug! I am not experiencing any problems since its fix by HijackThis.
Thank you so much, Bertha, for all your help and for sticking with me to the end! Here is the current log file for your final inspection:

Hey Barb,

Try running AdAware SE and Spybot S&D for me from the link below see if they find somethign that is nto showing up in your Hijackthis Log

http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13

Set them up as shown and reboot between each scan

When I ran Spybot S&D, it found CasinoPopupStuff, BookedSpace, Laypros, MagicControl.Agent, and ShopAtHome. I check marked all the RED (they were all RED) and clicked on Fix. Had to reboot to complete the scan and clear memory.

Then ran Ad-Aware SE. It found BookedSpace in 10 reg places, 32 VX2 reg values, 2 VX2 files: c:\Docume~1\Barbar~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\biznote_lrg.gif and C:\Windows\inf\Pynix.inf.
45 objects were removed.

I then ran CleanUp for good measure and re-booted and ran HijackThis.

The pop-up ~http://www.nuker.com - Warning - ... ~
came up when I came here to post a new message. Here's the log file:

Hey Barb,

As AdAware found instances of VX2 on your system try donwloading this add on tool for AdAware which targets VX2 then do a full system Scan again

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

http://download.lavasoft.de.edgesuite.n ... leaner.exe

Also as you keep getting re accurign problems you may want to think about whther you wish to continue usign Incredimail this is becuase it is prown to help re infect your system with junk

Heres a link you can read about it: http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2002/2002-10-10.htm#6

So whether you choose to keep it or not is up to you

Please le tme know what you decide and how things are running now

I got the VX2 add-on for Ad-Aware on Sunday. Apparently the stuff comes back each time I boot.
I'm not using Incredimail but I have received email from someone who does. I dont find it in Add/Remove programs. Can you help me get rid of it, as well as do something to keep VX2 from re-appearing at each boot?

Hey Barb,

Try this approach for me to tackle the VX2 problem

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log.

Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

We need to clear this up before we look at Incredimail
