Unread postby Gianteric » July 11th, 2006, 3:38 am

Hi, I am not sure if this is really malware, I think its adware, so if it doesn't belong on these forums please tell me and I will try to find another forum for help. I have this adware on my desktop now. My other post was on my laptop. My sister's friend had a virus, so that it sent Instant Messages through AIM to people on her buddy list and said that it was a picture. My sister got one of these messages and downloaded the "picture", but it was really just this adware. I have Norton 2006, and it sees it and says that it resolves it, but it keeps coming back. Can you guys help me? Here is my HijackThis log:

Hi

I'm Gary R. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.
Please be patient, I know that you want your problems solved quickly, and I will work hard to help you.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.

Your computer is quite badly infected, and it may take a few posts to get you clean.

First can you go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and uninstall the following programs (if found).

NewDotNet (may be New.Net)
Maxi Files (could be Toolbar 888)
Viewpoint Toolbar

Download and unzip BFU.zip to its own folder C:\BFU.

Next, RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra Remover. Save it in the folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not run the Uninstaller and the Remover yet.

Download ewido anti-malware it is a free version of the program.

  • Install ewido anti-malware.
  • Launch ewido by double-clicking on the icon.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

    • At the top of the main screen click Update.
      • Then in the Manual Update section, click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • When updates are completed, close Ewido.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:

Boot into safe mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly as you power up.

This will bring up a menu, select Safe Mode and press enter. Log on as a user with administrator priviledges.

Now run a scan with Ewido.
  • Click on Scanner
    • Click on the Settings tab, and set the following settings.
      • How to act
        • Click on Recommended actions, and set to Quarantine.
      • How to scan
        • Check all options.
      • Possibly unwanted software.
        • Check all options.
      • Reports
        • Check Automatically generate report after every scan.
        • Uncheck Only if threats were found.
      • What to scan
        • Check Scan every file.
    • Click on the Scan tab.
      • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
      • When the scan has finished
        • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine, if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
        • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button.

Note: Don't save the report before you hit the Apply action button.

Close ewido anti-malware.

Ewido will save a report in the following location C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\Reports

Now run BFU.
Open My Computer and navigate to the c:\BFU folder. Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

In the script line to execute field copy and paste c:\bfu\alcanshorty.bfu
Press execute and let it do its job.

Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

Reboot into Normal Mode.

We need to stop a service...
  • Click Start button then select Run.
  • Type services.msc then hit OK.
  • Scroll down and find the service called.
Microsoft SCC Host Protocol

  • Right-click on Service and choose Properties.
  • On the General tab under Service Status click the Stop button to stop the service.
  • Beside Startup Type in the dropdown menu select Disabled.
  • Click Apply then OK. Exit the Services utility.
(Note: If the service isn't listed go ahead with the rest of the instructions)

Let's delete that service
  • Start HijackThis.
  • Click Config button.
  • Click Misc Tools button.
  • click Delete an NT Service button
  • Copy and Paste the text in the box below in the Delete an NT Service window.
TaskMGM

  • Click OK.
  • Close HijackThis.

Now halt these Processes (if found), by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, this will bring up Windows Task Manager.

mptft.exe
ssn6tuu.exe
ssec.exe
nr1rnqm8.exe

Thank you so much for all your help! I think I missunderstood your instructions, I thought Ewido would automatically save a log of the scan, but apparently it didn't. Would you like me to do the scan again? It found a bunch of stuff. A lot of it said that it was tracking cookies or something. Here is my HijackThis log:

Hi Gianteric,

Looks a lot better, hows your computer running.

Did you uninstall NewDotNet, because there's an entry still in your HJT log (Do not try to fix this with HJT). Are you having any problems connecting to the Internet?

As regards your Ewido log. If you open Ewido and click on Reports, it will show a record of the scans you've made. Click on the entry you want to look at, this will open the log. Now click on Save Report as, and give the report a name you can remember.

By default it will save to the Reports folder in this location:- C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\Reports

Post it to me please.

Clear out your Temp Files.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Check the following boxes:
    • Windows Temp
    • Current User Temp
    • All Users Temp
    • Temporary Internet Files
    • Prefetch
    • Recycle Bin
    • Java Cache
  • The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check Select All.
  • Now click Empty Selected.
  • When you get the Done Cleaning message, click OK.
  • If you use Firefox browser.
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Opera browser.
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    • Click the Empty Selected button.

Make sure you clear your temp files BEFORE running the Kaspersky Scan, as there will be less files to scan that way, and it will take less time.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings.
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK.
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post please, along with the Ewido log.

My computer is running fine. No problems connecting to the internet. I didn't uninstall NewDotNet because I couldn't find it anywhere in add/remove programs. A little bit ago Norton found something called like NDotNet or NewDotNet or something, and it said it resolved it, but I'm not sure if it really did or not. About my Ewido log, when I click on reports, it says "No reports available." Should I do another scan? Here is the results of the Kaspersky scan:

Hi Gianteric,

Don't worry about the Ewido log. Did you have Automatically generate report after every scan checked, and Only if threats were found unchecked in the Reports section before running a scan?

Anyway, I had you run Kaspersky just in case there wasn't an Ewido report.

Its found a few things, but nothing too much to worry about.

Did you run ATF cleaner before running the Kaspersky scan, because there are some infected Temp files in the log that we'll have to clean out manually.

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files and delete the contents of the folder. Do not delete the folder

Take note of any files or folders you have trouble deleting, and let me know.

Download Pocket Killbox and install it to your Desktop. Do not run it yet.

  • First copy the filepaths in the box below to your clipboard, by highlighting them and pressing Ctrl+C.
C:\Mendoza1.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\misc001\Mendoza.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nr1rnqm8.exe
C:\windr32.exe

  • Open Killbox and check a mark in the "RadioBox" which says Delete On Reboot
  • Click File > Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click on the Red button with a Cross, and answer Yes when prompted to Backup and Delete the pasted files.
  • Answer Yes when prompted to Reboot now.

I'd like you to check a file for Viruses.
C:\Documents and Settings\Eric\My Documents\pic from christine.zip

  • Click on the Browse button at the top of the screen.
  • Browse to the file.
  • Click OK.
  • Click Send, and the file will upload to VirusTotal / Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Note details of any viruses found.
  • Post details back to me please.

Your System Restore points are heavily infected, but providing you don't do a System Restore they cannot re-infect you. We'll clear those out in due course, I like to do it last in case we have any unforeseen problems (better an infected RP than no RP).

I don't think we'll do anything about the NewDotNet remnant in your HJT log, its not infectious, and isn't causing problems. Because it is part of your LSP (Layered Service Protocols), removing it can be potentially hazardous (you could lose internet connectivity), and the gain does not justify the risk.

If it becomes a problem, there are tools we can use, but they are not without risk.

Post me the details from the Jotti's/Virus Total scans, plus a new HJT log please.

I'll give you a list of things to do to secure your computer, and we'll clear out your Restore Points once I've heard back from you.

Yes, I had Automatically generate report after every scan checked and Only if threats were found unchecked. Yes, I ran ATF cleaner before the Kaspersky scan, and I checked everything. I didn't have any trouble deleting any of the temoporary internet files.

The file pic from christine.zip was the file that we originally got the adware.linkmaker from. the results of the VirusTotal scan are here:

Hi Gianteric,

OK, just the pic from christine.zip file to get rid of then it looks like you're clean.

We'll use Killbox to get rid of it.
  • First copy the filepath in the box below to your clipboard, by highlighting it and pressing Ctrl+C.
C:\Documents and Settings\Eric\My Documents\pic from christine.zip

  • Open Killbox and check a mark in the "RadioBox" which says Delete On Reboot
  • Click File > Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click on the Red button with a Cross, and answer Yes when prompted to Backup and Delete the pasted files.
  • Answer Yes when prompted to Reboot now.

OK, if you're not having any problems with your computer, it's time to secure it against further infection.

Update your Java.

Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can and are using to infect systems. You are running an old version.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

  • Close any programmes you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Click Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment, and install it to your computer.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Lets reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to clean the restore points.
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
  • Turn ON System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOTon a regular basis
We need to re hide system files.

To do so, please follow the steps below:

  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Put a check by "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Do not show hidden files and folders."
  • Check "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Updating Windows and Internet Explorer

IMPORTANT: You need to update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you're running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed. (Free at Microsoft Office Update).

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

  • From within Internet Explorer click on Tools > Options > Security > Internet > Custom Level.
  • Make sure these options are set as follows:

    • Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following are free programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A brief description is included with each item, click on name to go to download site.

  • Adaware SE Personal
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial
  • Spybot S & D
Spybot is a scanner like Adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and protection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here
  • SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes "kill bits" in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
  • IE Spyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones LIST. This means that you can still view the "bad" webpages, but the webpages can't do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies). Use IE Spyad for single account computers, and IE Spyad 2 for multi account computers.
  • Hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
    • Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file, here.
  • If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:

    • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    • Click run
    • In the dialog box, type services.msc
    • hit enter, then locate dns client
    • Highlight it, then double-click it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click ok
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It's very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a LISTing of some, on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - LIST of free Anti virus programs
  • Use a Firewall - I cannot stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
    See here to choose one.
  • Site Advisor This is a utility that can be downloaded and installed. It loads an icon to the taskbar of your browser (versions for IE and Firefox), indicating the trustworthiness of the site you are on. Green for safe, Red for suspicious. Click on the icon to access details that SiteAdvisor has about the site.

Just a final reminder for you.
  • UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
  • Run Spybot and Adaware regularly. (Once a week minimum)
  • It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure you always have the latest security updates installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Stand up and be Counted.
NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.
Image
Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is Alcan Worm... please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agencies that something will get done.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Gary R

Some of the above is a general post I give when someone's computer is clean. Obviously you have already taken care of some of the issues mentioned, but it is important that you read through them, and address any that you may have missed.

Keep secure.

Gianteric

It has a topic for any infection without a seperate topic.

http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/viewtopic.php?t=137

That would be the correct topic to place it.

It will also give links for you to use for your government agencies.
We need to fight these people on all frounts to get rid of malware :)
