TROJ_VUNDO.H

Unread postby seamhall » May 5th, 2005, 12:21 am

I'm new to this board but was hoping for some help. My Trend Micro PC-cillin identified an infected file C:\Windows\repair\vgadoc.dll under the virus name TROJ_VUNDO.H. PCcillin was unable to quarantine or clean it; I cannot manually remove it either. I tried following their instructions from a link which suggested removing file, then deleting registry values. I did that in safe mode, only to find the values still there. I also used System Mechanic incinerator to try to remove the file to no avail. I spoke with the tech support at PCcillin and they sent a system cleaner via email which I ran in safe mode- it couldn't erase the file either. I've searched vgadoc.dll and troj_vundo.H and can't seem to find much out there. Any ideas or suggestions???
thanks

Please post us a hijackthis log for review.
The most recent of vundo infections can be cleaned manually with a little assistance.

Here is the logfile from hijackthis after infection with TROJ_VUNDO.H which trendPCcillin has identified as on c:windows\repair\vgadoc.dll. The tech support at PCcillin has been so far unable to help; downloaded a symmantec tool (fixvundo.exe) which didn't even find it. Any suggestions???
Thanks

Yes, we can kill this one for you.

Please copy the text from within the code box below and paste it into a blank notepad window.
Save it as vundo.reg and in the save as type box choose .*.All Files.
Save it to the desktop but dont run it yet.

Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSEvents.MSEvents]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSEvents.MSEvents.1]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEvents]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEvents.1]

Please download Process Explorer by Sysinternals from here:
http://www.sysinternals.com/files/procexpnt.zip

Please download, but do not run yet,
KillBox

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of vgadoc.dll once and then click the kill button. There may be several listed.

After you have killed all of the vgadoc.dll's under winlogon click ok.

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of vgadoc.dll then click the kill button. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you have done that click ok again.

Close all instances of Internet Explorer and all other apps.
Next run HijackThis again, checkmark and fix the following lines:
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44} - C:\WINDOWS\repair\vgadoc.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: vgadoc - C:\WINDOWS\repair\vgadoc.dll

Then double click vundo.reg and allow it to merge with the registry.
If you can't see it on desktop in safe mode, do a Windows search for it and doubleclick it.

Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the delete on reboot button.

Enter the following filepath and filename into the "Full path of file to delete" box:

C:\WINDOWS\repair\vgadoc.dll

Click the red circle with the white x and allow your computer to reboot.

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log.

A couple of things left to do:

Run hijackthis again with no Windows Apps or Browser windows open, Scan, and checkmark/fix the following lines:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

That will clean up some ghosts.

Do you normally connect with a Proxy server?

If you do, then no need for another log, just my usual all-clean speech:

Now that you are clean, we have a couple of other things to finish up:

Clean your cache and toss your cookies!
You should do this routinely, say once a week.
(Empty your Temp Folders)
Clean out your Temp files as follows:
At the top, click Tools>Internet Options> and then, in the center click Delete Cookies
Click Delete Files and then in the new applet check the box for all offline content
Click OK
Close that applet and open the C>Windows>Temp folder, and delete all files in there too, and all files in sub-folders of Temp.
Empty the C:\Windows\Prefetch Folder about once a month. More if you use the internet a lot.
Empty ALL C:\Documents and Settings\user name here\LocalSettings\Temp Folders

Note: If you cannot delete them all at once because you have too many, then click and hold ctrl and highlight a batch of them at a time. Once highlighted, R-click over the highlight and select delete. Rinse, lather, repeat until folder is empty.

Reset a new system restore point

Then please consider using some of these apps to help prevent further infections:

Spywareblaster and Spywareguard DL, check for updates, enable all protection, and your done!

Instead of using Internet Explorer for your day-to-day browsing, try one of these free browsers instead:
Opera. Features include tabbed browsing, built-in pop-up stopper
Mozilla, Firefox, Camino. Linux based.
Slim Browser. IE without the bells and whistles.

For email, I find Thunderbird has all the feel of OE but without the Security Compromises.

Mailwasher. To safely preview and delete email, amongst other uses.
