no need to apologize, I should have told you that ten replies back.
the person sold my sister a computer in shambles (and it is now mine).
we don't want a compromised windows 7 operating system, clean or otherwise.
You folks here are experts, and I know I am not, but it can't hurt to ask, would this pc happen to have a restore or recovery partition that returns the pc back to factory default (I think it does)? If so, I sure would like to take advantage of it.
we have a disk here, but I doubt it is the one we want. it says:

drivers and utilities

first I want to do a little google about the recovery/restore (probably in vein).
don't feel bad, torreattack, both me and my sister got a good deal on the pc even if it ends up with linux on it.

Sure. But the Recovery System will only restore it back to Windows 7 Starter.

This is not the re-install OS disk, but just hardware drivers.

To restore your computer to the original factory installation, follow these steps:
- Restart the computer and after the Dell Logo appears and then disappears repeatedly press the <F8> key until you see the Advanced Boot Options menu.
- From the Advanced Boot Options menu, select the Repair your computer option by highlighting it using your arrow keys and press enter.
- Click NEXT and you’ll now be asked to login with your administrator account. The administrator account is the account created the first time the computer was turned on.
- Now, click on Dell Factory Image Recovery and DataSafe options and follow the prompts provided.

Hello,
thank you for the help that you and the teachers have given me. I have installed linux mint on the computer (I have been working on it non-stop and had the break-thru last night about twelve hours ago). I was very fortunate that it worked out, the computer was very fussy about which flash drive it would accept an OS from.
I am going to attempt to donate ten dollars to you folks. times are tough and I know you folks appreciate it. you're great.
