almost forgot to say that my computer seems to be running fine now. No pop ups, and no mouse freezing either, so it looks like we've solved the problem. Thank you very much.

just out of curiosity, what did you want to look at the combofix and hijackThis logs for?
Hi Quazzer,
just out of curiosity, what did you want to look at the combofix and hijackThis logs for?

They tell me whether anything has changed or sneaked in :)

Congratulations your logs look clean :D

Let’s see if I can help you keep it that way

First lets tidy up :D

Items to Delete
Rootkit revealer.zip
Rootkit revealer folder
Silent Runners.zip
Silent Runners folder
ComboFix.exe

All the logs that have been produced
eg.
Kaspersky log
Silent Runners log
Rootkit Revealer log
Any Combofix.txt (will be on your C:\ drive)
C:\ Report.txt

Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK

Now you should disable System restore to purge any infected files and then re-enable it, for help please click HERE

Reset System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

So How Did I Get Infected In The First Place

If you can see a program in the must have section that you have never seen or used then get it!

The last and most important thing I can tell you is UPDATE.
If you don't update your security programs (Antivirus, Antispyware even Windows) then you are at risk.
Malware changes on a day to day basis. You should update every week at the very least.

If you follow this advice then (with a bit of luck) you will never have to hear from me again :D

If you could post back one more time to let me know everything is OK, then I can have this thread archived.

Thankyou so very much for your help. Its amazing how people will help others that they don't even know, and in their own time aswell! Much apprecciated.

one quick question tho...

I was wondering why system restore should be disabled, surely it should be enabled? When I went to unckeck the box though, I came to find that it was already unchecked, is this supposed to be right?
Hi Quazzer,

System restore should be disabled because this removes all the restore points that may be infected.
You should follow the instructions in this sequence.

  1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
    Restart your computer
  2. Turn ON System Restore

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

I have done what you said, and have read through the post on how not to become infected, and have tried to apply almost every suggestion which was made.

I would like to thankyou once again for your help. Hopefully I won't have to bother you or your colleages agin.

Best wishes,

Quazzer
