Earthlink coming back to haunt me (page 3) — malwareremoval.com Archive

A few months ago I went through my “Add/Remove Programs” list (I use Windows XP) and deleted a few Earthlink programs that I haven’t used in years. Since then, I’ve been getting a dialog box whenever I open any folder on my desktop. It says “Please wait while Windows configures Earthlink Accelerator” followed by an error message that says “The feature you are trying to use is on a CDROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the Earthlink Accelerator disk and Click OK. “ I don’t have this disk. I press cancel and I get “Error 1076. No valid source could be found for product Earthlink Accelerator. The Windows Installer cannot continue.” I press the “OK” and it tries to configure Earthlink Accelerator again, and I get the same 2 error messages. I can cancel this process and my computer works normally, but it’s very annoying that this happens every time I try to open a windows folder and I was hoping you could help. My logs are pasted below. I probably am going to go through with the Factory Reset at some point. Do you have a preferred anti-virus software?

Microsoft Security essentials is good and free.

Since this issue is being solved by a complete Factory Reset, this thread will be closed.
