Help with really really slow laptop please

Hi My friend has asked me to look at his sons laptop which is running windows vista. The complaint is that it is very slow (it only has 512mb ram), but this takes about 10 minutes to start up and over a minute just to open an internet explorer window. Internet explorer keeps not responding and It won't install service pack 1 either, and wouldn't let me even visit this site - it said it was forbidden (I'm using my own laptop right now). I'm in the process of following your final instructions but the link you gave me to the adobe download won't work as it keeps asking me for a proxy setting?

The pc is still very slow and internet explorer keeps not responing for the first 10 seconds and windows still takes 10 minutes to boot, but hopefully the ram will help that.

Anyway, thank you for all of your help in getting my friends laptop clean.
