IE popping up ad windows at random - redux

This is a continuation of the problems described in http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=52049 . The computer behaved for a few hours - long enough for the thread to be closed - but the original symptoms have returned. Symptoms returned before OTL cleanup and other suggested preventative steps were done, so none of the suggested actions in the last post were completed. The system is in the same state it was in after TFC was run; no additional changes have been made. Hi Occam,

At this point I'm officially giving up and reformatting the computer.

In view of the problems with the computer and the fact that Windows update is not working I agree that this would be the best way to get the computer back in working order.

Thank you for the extra information, I hope this will eventually be used to help others.
