Nasty Infection

There is no sign of a Third Party Firewall installed on your system.
As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

There are several possible reasons for the Firewall not showing.

1. You are using Windows Firewall. This is not recommended as it will only stop incoming material. It permits all outgoing traffic.
   
2. You are using a hardware firewall. It should be complemented with a Third Party Software Firewall
   
3. You have a firewall, but you disabled it. Please re-enable it.
   
4. You don't have a firewall at all.

If you don't have a third party firewall, please get ONE firewall and install it. Restart the computer for changes to take effect.

Please post back a new HijackThis log after installing the firewall.

I was running Windows Firewall, so I disabled it, installed Comodo Firewall, it recommended a scan, so I did it. Nothing was found, restarted and the firewall flagged that "svchost.exe" was trying to connect to my computer. I figured that was my router, so I allowed it. I re-ran HJT and here is the log.

I noticed that it installed an "Ask" search bar. I just turned it off in Firefox from my "View>Toolbars" menu, but could I also remove it? Also, would it be better if I bought and installed something like Kasparsky's Internet Security for total protection, or am I just as well covered running all of these different free versions of Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Adware, Anti-Malware, and Third Party Firewall, etc. I have been computing for quite awhile with the false sense of security with Avira AntiVir and Windows Firewall. I'd appreciate your expert opinion moving forward from painful experience.

If you want to delete ask toolbar.

• Click Start
• Go to Control Panel
• Go to Add/Remove Programs

Well, it all depends. I use to use avast! However, if I were picking out a paid one, I would have to say Kaspersky. Nod32 would be my second choice. (I run kaspersky myself)
In my view, I don't think it is so much a case of the paid AVs having more functionality than the free AVs as it is a case of how fast the definitions for new infections are available. Kaspersky is usually extremely quick in bringing out definitions for new infections and has excellent heuristics as well.
Windows firewall is a basic firewall better than nothing, however, it's not bi-directional, this is where you need a third party firewall.
One point to remember is you only need one a\v and one firewall running on your system! you can however have several antimalware/adaware programs running some of which I will give recommendations on in my last post

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Create a new System Restore Point
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

• Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  
• Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
  
• Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  
• Select the More options tab
  
• Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
  

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Everything has been running smoothly now that I'm clean again. Right now I have the Comodo Firewall and Avira AntiVir running and I'm turning Spybot back on. However, I think I'm going to opt for Kaspersky's Internet Security and just wrap all the protection into one package. The cost of the paid version is nothing compared to the lost time I've suffered with this infection. Thanks for all of the help. I've learned a lot along the way.

Now I have some relatives that want me to look at their computers that they are ready to throw in the trash because of infections. I'll attempt to clean them up myself, but depending on how bad they are, I may be starting a new thread and posting a HJT log.
