Extremely slow computer

Symptoms: I have problems with my computer running extremely slowly lately. In particular: Firefox freezes an awful lot, often completely randomly when it doesn't appear to be doing anything taxing, for minutes at a time. I very frequently get the frozen-javascript message popping up. Other strange things: Firefox occasionally swaps tabs without me asking it to. Windows programs occasionally swap without me asking them to. Sometimes simple things like the standard "open file" dialog box in programs like notepad or paint take a very long time to pop up (like 30 seconds).
