Have to keep old comp going: blue screens & slowness (page 2)

I'm trying to keep my computer going as I can't get a new one yet. I've received 3 blue screens in the last couple months which is uncharacteristic of my system. I've also experienced more slowness that I have been attempting to repair. A few months ago I unsubscribed from McAfee suite, as I deemed them to charge too much and their software seemed to slow my system too much. Since then my system seems to have deteriorated. I guess you do get what you pay for. I used AVG as a replacement antivirus, getting it from majorgeeks.com. I'm also running Advanced Systemcare 5 by IObit. And I wound up downloading all of IObits offerings: defrag, malware fighter, and game booster. I did uninstall game booster already. I would appreciate any suggestions of what is the best freeware to replace all of these softwares. I also recently bought a Brother laser printer, and the install disk placed 5-6 new softwares on my system. I'm not sure how invasive they are or that I really need any of them. I migh

Sounds good. Let's do it. I'll give Avast a try.

By the way, I think I removed around 20-25 programs last night. I'm having trouble getting Canon Utilities Photostitch 3.1 out of my Add/Remove Programs listing. Would CCleaner help eliminate it, or do you know a way?

Try to do this entire sequence in one session if you can.
Don't do any unnecessary Internet surfing between the AVG removal and the Avast installation.

Download the Avast Installer
Download the Avast! Free Installer from HERE: http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download .
When you click the Download button, You will get sent to a C-NET site having another Download button. Click it.
The download file is named avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
Save it to your desktop, but don't run it yet.

Download the AVG Removal Tool from HERE
It is named avg_remover_stf_x86_2011_1322.exe
Save it to your desktop, but don't run it yet.

Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight this Entry, and choose Remove :

AVG 2012

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.

REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Double click the AVG Removal tool avg_remover_stf_x86_2011_1322.exe on your Desktop to run it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine Again
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install Avast
Double Click the Avast Installer named avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe on your Desktop to run it.
Let it Install, Update itself and run a full scan.
Let it remove anything it finds.

Now you can delete both the AVG Remover and the Avast Installer from your desktop.
You should be good to go.
