Hi there, I was trying to find some way to install Skypemate and ended up getting iLivid or something like that on my PC. It's so annoying - it installed it's own toolbar and every time I open a new tab in IE it comes up as the Search Engine. So far I have removed iLivid and another program, Bandoo, via add or remove programs and tried restarting. I have also gone into Program Files and tried to delete an iLivid toolbar folder - this was not 'allowed' but having said that I rebooted again and that file disappeared so now I can't tell you what the error message was.. The hxxp://www.searchqu.com//406 tab problem is still here however. I am super worried that I am getting all kinds of viruses right now.. Sometimes IE just closes itself for no reason.. I have also done a Malwarebytes scan which picked up 6 infected files. I read the post about DDS and I think I've done it ok (see below) except there was no option to open an 'Attach' file.. basically the little black screen thing ran, then

We just have one more fix to run, then if no further problems i can give you final instructions.

We need to run an OTL Fix

Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.

Copy and Paste the following code into the

textbox. Do not include the word Code

Hi Laura,
Well done, the good news is your latest set of logs appear to be clean!
This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware.

Clean up with OTL

Double-click OTL.exe to start the program. This will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.
Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
On the OTL main screen, press the CleanUp! button
Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

You can now delete any tools we used if they remain on your Desktop.

Protection Programs
Don't forget to re-enable any protection programs we disabled during your fix.

Now we needed to deal with security vulnerabilities

Internet Explorer: 7

This is outdated and a security risk, you need to install internet explorer 8

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Install SpywareBlaster
Download and install Javacools SpywareBlaster from Here
SpywareBlaster adds a list of ActiveX controls, tracking cookies and sites which will be blocked in either Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers. You need to manually check for updates regularly.

Install SiteAdvisor
SiteAdvisor is a toolbar for Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox which alerts you if you're about to enter a potentially dangerous website.

Install WinPatrol
As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.

MVPS Hosts

Install MVPS Hosts File From Here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer

thank you so much for your help. You guys really do a fantastic job and I am so grateful for you helping me to get rid of Searchqu and all it's associated baddies! You may not believe this but my computer was only a day old when I came onto the forum with this - it's all because I went online with no antivirus etc..

Friends have recommended Google Chrome to me (I'm not the biggest fan of Firefox) so I think I'm going to switch from IE.

You may not believe this but my computer was only a day old when I came onto the forum with this - it's all because I went online with no antivirus etc..

Yes it's not a good idea to have no antivirus installed, with the recommendations i have made you should be better protected in the future.
