microsoft download site (amongst others) not connecting (page 2)

I should have posted more details of the problems I am having, hence the late edit. When using google.co.uk, I get to what appears to be a normal results page, but clicking on a result sends me all over the place. Using +, " or - in the search string sends me to another results page altogether. The google.co.uk page is not the same one I get when I use my works laptop. The logo doesn't update on special days etc, so I think it's a corrupt or hijacked page. Using google.com works just fine, it's just the UK page that's infected. Another problem is that when I try to download microsoft updates or some other sites, I get a page load error saying I've typed in the address incorrectly or I have a network timeout. The above problems happen on both IE and Firefox. I will leave this topic open for five days,if it gets closed, start a new thread to have your log looked over to make sure all is well.

OK, I've done it. A clean copy of XP. The files I'd backed up to the external hard drive are restored OK, office is up and working and after a few fraught (what seemed like) hours, I'm connected to the internet as you can tell. Just installing XP service pack 3.

Initial signs are promising. I couldn't download anything from Microsoft before, so fingers crossed. Will be in touch with an update later, but in the mean time, thanks for your help.

Hi Dan,

Everything still seems OK. That was quite an intense afternoon. I did get a bit twitchy when I couldn't get the internet connection up and running but it seems OK now.

Thanks once again for your help. Nice to know there are some good guys out there.

Will do, but it won't be till later. Back at work today, so it'll have to wait till I get home.

Yes, it was a busy and stressful afternoon, but I managed it OK in the end. I feel a bit soft being an IT professional myself. I'm more a mainframe guy though. I lnormally eave the PC stuff to a mate of mine usually, who's very good at that sort of thing. Trouble is, he's been working away for a little while now, hence calling on this site for help.

Just out of interest, how is this site/yourself funded? Is there anywhere I can make a small donation or something to show my appreciation of a job well done?
