Step 1

Show hidden files and folders
  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Go to Tools > Folder Options.
  3. Select the View tab.
  4. Scroll down to Hidden files and folders.
  5. Select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck (untick) Hide extensions of known file types.
  7. Uncheck (untick) Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
  8. Click Yes when prompted.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Close My Computer.


Step 2

Please delete this folder.

C:\Documents and Settings\Derek Foot\.housecall6.6

Step 3

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  1. Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 1 and save it to your desktop.
  2. Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  3. Click the "Download" button to the right.
  4. Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  5. The page will refresh.
  6. Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  7. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  8. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  9. Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  10. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  11. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  12. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  13. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.


Step 4

I don't see any firewall running in your log. It could be that you disabled it, you are behind a hardware router firewall, you are using Windows Firewall or you have no firewall at all.

If you have no firewall or is behind a hardware firewall, please download ONE firewall from one of the links below:

ZoneAlarm Free
Filseclab Personal Firewall Professional Edition
Outpost Firewall Free
Kerio
Jetico Personal Firewall --> Not recommended for novice users.

Step 5

  1. Open HijackThis and choose Do a system scan and save a logfile.
  2. Once the scanning is done, a log will be produced and Notepad will open.
  3. Post this new HijackThis log.


In your next reply, please post back the HijackThis log.

I have progressed to Removing the older versions of Java & i have rebooted.When moving on to the installation of the jre-6u1 window....
the only new icon? on desktop is named "1181798426478-integrated.jnlp"
Double clicking this produces the prompt "Windows cannot open this file...."
Please advise what I should do now.
Regarding the subject of a firewall. I appear to have McAfee personal firewall but have been unable to discover whether it is active or not. Please advise how I should make certain it is active OR would you recommend installing one of your other suggeted firewalls (how do I decide which is the best of those listed?) Thank you.

  1. Please go to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and open HijackThis.
  2. Select Open the Misc Tools section.
  3. Look under System tools.
  4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  5. Click on the Save list... button.
  6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log to the desktop by clicking on Desktop on the left hand side. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  7. Notepad will open. Please copy and paste this log in your next reply.

Hi toofy,

I don't see any McAfee firewall from that list. You will have to install one. For an easy-to-use firewall, you can get ZoneAlarm.

For more advanced users, you could use Jetico.

As for the Java issue, it looks like you got the wrong file. You have to select Windows Offline Installation option after reading the agreement, not any other files.

Hi toofy,

One last program to update and you are done. If you have any other problems, please tell me.

Step 1

  1. Download and install the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader from here. Save the installation file to your desktop.
  2. Click on Start > Control Panel. Double click on Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Find Adobe Reader 6.0.1 and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
  4. Double click on AdbeRdr810_en_US.exe to run the installation.


Step 2

  1. Go to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and ppen HijackThis. Choose Do a system scan and save a logfile.
  2. Once the scanning is done, a log will be produced and Notepad will open.
  3. Post this new HijackThis log.

Hi toofy, you can enable both AVG programs.

Also, please restart your computer. After that, follow this set of instructions to post another HijackThis log.

  1. Go to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and open HijackThis. Choose Do a system scan and save a logfile.
  2. Once the scanning is done, a log will be produced and Notepad will open.
  3. Post this new HijackThis log.

thank you for cleaning my pc.
re: flushing--- I have spent over one hour trying to follow the link you suggested without being sure I a going in the right direction. Is it 'flush.pl' that i need to run? (I often think the clever people that write things for general usage should ask idiots like me if they can understand them fairly quickly, before publishing them. It is very frustrating having to go round in circles for ages and still not progressing!!)

Hi toofy,

Please follow these steps to flush your system restore points.

Step 1

  1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Select the System Restore tab.
  3. Check (tick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart your computer.


Step 2

After restarting your computer, follow these steps:
  1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Select the System Restore tab.
  3. Uncheck (untick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart your computer.


Your system restore points is now flushed. Any other queries?

Thanks once again! I have completed the system restore procedure. About the Tony Klein suggestions: I have downloaded most of the recommendations. Please note I think the HOSTS program is too complicated for me to operate & so i have omiited that one. Regarding item 12) ActiveX in IE:- I have followed the instructions in the first paragraph but do not understand what i am supposed to do about the 2nd & 3rd paras. If There is something else I have to do please let me know.
