OK... I thought NIS might've been an issue... It doesn't play nice with SP2. Not sure what it is about it... but I'm hearing more and more issues with SP2 and Norton products.
One of my computers that has SP2 on it doesn't like Norton either, I run AVG on it. *shrug* Seems like a better product anyways.
You can delete that reg file... wasn't what I expected.
I'll keep looking into the Windows search and the console issue, and post back if I think of something for you to try.

Couple things for you to try to restore your search function.
Reboot to safe mode and login as administrator.
Click Start>Run, type in C:\Windows\inf and then click OK.
Locate the Srchasst.inf file. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install.
If that doesn't work, try this fix from MS here.
Let me know how that goes.
