Search redirects in all browsers

Unread postby profg60 » December 22nd, 2009, 11:16 pm

Greetings,

My search results (both Google and Yahoo!) are getting redirected. Sometimes the first result is not affected but each one after that is. This happens in both IE and Firefox; I even downloaded Opera and the first search on that was redirected as well. The Hijack This and uninstall list are pasted below. Any suggestions would be appreciated ... thanks in advance, Glenn

Hi profg60,

Please close the thread http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic139871.html before we continue. It is not possible to have two helpers work on the same problem at the same time. If you wish to keep that thread open please let me know and this one will be closed.

Please re-open HijackThis and select Scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present):

Now close all other open windows and then click on Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Now please reboot your compter.

Please delete the file AdobeFlashPlayerHD.exe from your desktop.

Please download DDS ... by sUBs.
Save it to your desktop. Alternate download link:here.
  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • A black Screen will open... read the contents but do nothing.
  • When DDS finishes... Notepad will open with 2 reports... DDS.txt and Attach.txt
Ignore the comments about zipping / attaching any of the report files. The 2 report files are not saved anywhere,
if you close Notepad, before copying /pasting them... you will need to run DDS again.
  • Copy/paste both DDS.txt and Attach.txt reports in your next reply.
  • Once the reports have been posted, you can delete DDS from your desktop.

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Please post the GMER log along with DDS.txt and Attach.txt from the DDS scan into your next reply.

Also please let me know if the browser redirects have stopped.

Re: Search redirects in all browsers

Unread postby profg60 » December 29th, 2009, 9:10 am

1. The redirects still occur.
2. The GMER took over 12 hours. While it was running a program found in Task Manager - 2 instances of dfsvc.exe were taking 50% of the CPU use each. Is this in any way related to my problems?
3. I noticed a program called "Roxio Live Share P2P," have no idea what this is, have never used it, and it does not show up in add/remove programs. Any suggestions on how to remove it? P2P just always sounds bad.
3. I'm not sure how to "close" the thread on the other site ... should I just post a message that it is closed?

Looking forward to more advice ........ thanks.

Hi profg60,

I noticed a program called "Roxio Live Share P2P," have no idea what this is, have never used it, and it does not show up in add/remove programs. Any suggestions on how to remove it? P2P just always sounds bad.

This software is used to share media on PCs within our own home and is not malware. We can remove it later if you wish.

I'm not sure how to "close" the thread on the other site ... should I just post a message that it is closed?

Posting a message to that thread explaining that you are being helped elsewhere will be fine, just to make sure nobody else is working on the same problem at the same time.

Run Combofix:

Temporarily disable any antispyware, antivirus and or antimalware real-time protection as they may interfere with running of ComboFix.

Download ComboFix from here to your Desktop.

For more information about Combofix please see here.

Close all programs.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it’s malware removal procedures, if not, then follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console. Once installed, you should see the following message:

The recovery console was successfuly installed.
Click ‘YES’ to continue scanning for malware
Click ‘NO’ for exit

Click the YES button.

The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your “drive access” light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

When finished ComboFix will produce a log file. Please post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Re: Search redirects in all browsers

Combofix complete, log pasted below. I used Google for a bunch of random searches and as of right now it appears that the redirecting has stopped, but I will continue to try more searches to make sure.

Unread postby deltalima » December 30th, 2009, 4:18 pm

Hi profg60,

ComboFix - CFScript
This script is for this user and computer ONLY! Using this tool incorrectly could cause problems with your operating system... preventing it from ever starting again!
You will not have Internet access when you execute ComboFix. All open windows will need to be closed!
  1. Please open Notepad and copy/paste all the text below... into the window:
    Code: Select all
    DDS::
    TB: Yahoo! Toolbar: {ef99bd32-c1fb-11d2-892f-0090271d4f88} -
    TB: {981FE6A8-260C-4930-960F-C3BC82746CB0} - No File
    TB: {604BC32A-9680-40D1-9AC6-E06B23A1BA4C} - No File
    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring]
    "DisableMonitoring"=dword:00000000
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\TrendAntiVirus]
    "DisableMonitoring"=dword:00000000
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\TrendFirewall]
    "DisableMonitoring"=dword:00000000
  2. Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt
  3. Please disable any Antivirus or Firewall you have active, as shown in this topic. Please close all open application windows.
*Only* when the 2 items above (Step 3) have been taken care of...
  4. Drag the CFScript.txt (icon) into the ComboFix.exe icon... as seen in the image below:
    Image
This will cause ComboFix to run again.
Do Not use your keyboard or mouse click anywhere in the ComboFix window, as this may cause the program to stall or crash.
Do Not touch your computer when ComboFix is running!
  5. When finished ComboFix will create a log file... you can save this file to a convenient place.
Please copy/paste the ComboFix log file in your next reply.
** Enable your Antivirus and Firewall, before connecting to the Internet again! **

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

  • Please run Malwarbytes Antimalware
  • Click on the Update tab and then click Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Please post the contents of the Malwarebytes log in your next reply along with the Combofix log..

Hi profg60,

Remove old Java
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs,
    highlight J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    click Remove
    highlight Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    click Remove
  • Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.

You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.2 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

Now please open Firefox and click on the Help menu item. Select Check for Updates then follow the instructions to update.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply

Hi profg60,

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Open Trend Micro Internet. This will bring up the main console window.

From the left pane, click Virus & Spyware Controls then, from the right pane.

click Quarantine

click Examine Quarantined Files

The Quarantine window will appear.

For 2009 products, this contains three tabs. For 2008 products, only two.

Select each tab in turn and then click Delete to remove the quarantined items.

Remove HijackThis

  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs,
    highlight HijackThis 2.0.2
    click Remove
  • Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.

Please delete the GMER file that you downloaded to your desktop (it will be named rcugttzi.exe).

Please delete the DDS icon from your desktop.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTC and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTC.exe..
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Reset the system restore points:

  1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Select the System Restore tab.
  3. Check (tick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart your computer.

After restarting your computer, follow these steps:

  1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Select the System Restore tab.
  3. Uncheck (untick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart your computer.

Note: Do this only ONCE, do not reset regularly.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date
Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
    Secunia Software Inspector
    F-secure Health Check

Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
