Hi Shellsbells,

There's a few things we need to address with your computer, so may take a few posts to clear it all off.

First can you go to Add/Remove programs in Control Panel and uninstall any of these programs (if found).

WebSearch Toolbar
WebSearch Tools
Search Assistant
Win-Tools Easy Installer

If you find more than one, uninstall them all before re-booting your computer (even if prompted to do so).
When all are uninstalled, reboot your computer.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop. (Do not run it yet)

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) and extract it to your Desktop. (Do not run it yet) (you're using an outdated version, make sure you've got the latest edition 2.68).

Please download ewido anti-malware it is a free version of the program.

  • Install ewido anti-malware.
  • Launch ewido by double-clicking on the icon.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

    • At the top of the main screen click Update.
      • Then in the Manual Update section, click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Do not run a scan with Ewido yet.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please boot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account (as long as it is an account with Administrator privileges).
Once in Safe Mode
  • Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2, then press Enter.
  • You will be prompted with: Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?
  • Type Y, then press Enter, to remove the Desktop background and clean infected registry keys.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected.
  • You may be prompted to replace the infected file.
  • If prompted, type Y, then press Enter.
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process.
  • Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply. The report can also be found at C:\rapport.txt
Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Clean out your Temp files.
  • Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Check the following boxes:
    • Windows Temp
    • Current User Temp
    • All Users Temp
    • Temporary Internet Files
    • Prefetch
    • Recycle Bin
    • Java Cache
  • The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check Select All.
  • Now click Empty Selected.
  • When you get the Done Cleaning message, click OK.
Run a scan with Ewido.
  • Click on Scanner
    • Click on the Settings tab, and set the following settings.
      • How to act
        • Click on Recommended actions, and set to Quarantine.
      • How to scan
        • Check all options.
      • Possibly unwanted software.
        • Check all options.
      • Reports
        • Check Automatically generate report after every scan.
        • Uncheck Only if threats were found.
      • What to scan
        • Check Scan every file.
    • Click on the Scan tab.
      • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.

When scan is finished, close ewido anti-malware.

Ewido will save a report in the following location C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\Reports

Open the SmitfraudFix folder again
  • Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3, then press Enter.
(Note: If you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.)

Find and delete this folder. (in bold)

C:\Program Files\Toolbar

Reboot back into Normal Mode.

Please post the following logs.
  • c:\rapport.txt
  • Ewido log
  • A new HijackThis log

You may need several replies to post the requested logs, else they might get cut off.

PS I notice you have entries for both Symantec/Norton AND McAfee on your computer. Are you running both? This is not a good idea, as they will cause conflicts (especially Norton & McAfee which are known to be heavy on resources). If you have recently uninstalled one or other of them, the uninstall has not been complete and you may have problems because of this.

Let me know and we can sort this out.

Hi shellsbells,

Did you set Ewido to Quarantine files as I asked?

  • Click on Scanner
    • Click on the Settings tab, and set the following settings.
      • How to act
        • Click on Recommended actions, and set to Quarantine.

Now scan again with Ewido. (Complete System Scan)

Post the Ewido log in your next post.

Now run a scan with HJT, and check the following items (if found).

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50245
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,CustomizeSearch = res://C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa

O2 - BHO: Trixie.Bho - {B0744341-96E0-4341-9ED2-8BC36CE0CCD0} - mscoree.dll (file missing)

O21 - SSODL: altmannsberger - {210b4043-35ca-4aa0-8796-191f9663dfb3} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vpxnk.dll (file missing)

Click Fix Checked to remove them.

Make sure that you can see hidden files and folders.
  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK.

Search for Hidden Files
By default, the Search companion does not search for hidden files. Because of this, you may be unable to find files, even though they exist on the drive.

To search for hidden or system files in Windows XP:
  • Click Start.
  • Click Search.
  • Click All files and folders.
  • Click More advanced options.
  • Click to select the Search hidden files and folders check box.

Shutdown your computer, and Boot Up into Safe Mode, by hitting the F8 key repeatedly as you power up.

This will bring up a menu, select Safe Mode and press enter. Log on as a user with administrator priviledges, and find and delete the following if found.

This File

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vpxnk.dll

You didn't tell me whether you're running both Norton and McAfee, please let me know. Having both running can cause lots of problems. Similarly if you've uninstalled one and it hasn't been fully removed, it can also cause problems.

Now can you send me a new HJT log, and the new Ewido log please.

Hi Gary

I did indeed set the ewido to Quarantine Files .. I have just had another look and it says its still set as that.

Should I still do what you suggested above?

Hi Gary

Here are my new logs after doing what you said above .... however I couldnt find C:\windows\system32\vpxnk.dll

As for Norton and Mcafee ... I use Mcafee and thought Norton was completely uninstalled from Add/Remove Programs but obviously not.

hi shellsbells,

I'm concerned as to why Ewido is not cleaning and Quarantining the infections it finds. This is a new edition of Ewido and I'm not fully familiar with it yet.
Gonna have to ask around about this, see if I'm missing something.

Norton has a history of not uninstalling properly.

I assume your version of Norton is either 2006/2005/2004 version. If not let me know.

If it is, go to this website Symantec Support and follow the instructions for using Norton Removal Tool. (Do not do Step 3).

Then post me a new HJT log and we'll see if there's anything left to remove afterwards.

Will get back to you about Ewido as soon as I've got something.

OK, worked out why Ewidos not working. My fault, I left out a couple of crucial instructions.

Run another scan with Ewido.

  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • When the scan has finished
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine, if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button.

Now Ewido should Quarantine the infections it finds.

Please send me the new Ewido log, along with your HJT log please.

Hi Shellsbells,

OK, things are looking a whole lot better now.

Just a couple of small things to do. The Norton removal tool got rid of most remnants, but not all (no surprise there really).

We need to stop a service...
  • Click Start button then select Run.
  • Type services.msc then hit OK.
  • Scroll down and find the service called.
Symantec Core LC

  • Right-click on Service and choose Properties.
  • On the General tab under Service Status click the Stop button to stop the service.
  • Beside Startup Type in the dropdown menu select Disabled.
  • Click Apply then OK. Exit the Services utility.

Let's delete that service
  • Start HijackThis.
  • Click Config button.
  • Click Misc Tools button.
  • click Delete an NT Service button
  • Copy and Paste the text in the box below in the Delete an NT Service window.
Symantec Core LC

  • Click OK.

Now run a scan with HJT, and check the following items.

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {339BB23F-A864-48C0-A59F-29EA915965EC} - (no file)

O16 - DPF: {1F2F4C9E-6F09-47BC-970D-3C54734667FE} - http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/asa/ctrl/LSSupCtl.cab
O16 - DPF: {3451DEDE-631F-421C-8127-FD793AFC6CC8} (ActiveDataInfo Class) - http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/asa/ctrl/SymAData.cab
O16 - DPF: {44990200-3C9D-426D-81DF-AAB636FA4345} (Symantec SmartIssue) - http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/asa/ctrl/tgctlsi.cab
O16 - DPF: {44990301-3C9D-426D-81DF-AAB636FA4345} (Symantec Script Runner Class) - http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/asa/ctrl/tgctlsr.cab

O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

Click Fix Checked to remove them.

Now find and delete the following folders highlighted in bold (if found).

C:\Program Files\Symantec (or anything related to Norton/Symantec).
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared

Let me know how things went. I'll post a list of things for you to do, to secure your computer against further infection, once I've heard back from you.

Might as well send me one last HJT log, so we've made sure that everything came off OK.

Hi again Gary

Tell you what, you certainly know your stuff! :D

Anyway, when I went on

Delete an NT Service button

Copy and Paste the text in the box below (Symantec Core LC) in the Delete an NT Service window.

It came back with a "pop up" saying 'The service you entered is system-critical! It can't be deleted'

Otherwise everything else was ok to do and here is the latest hijackthis log: -

Hi Shellsbells,

Sorry, forgot to tell you about the messages, you get them whenever you're removing a service.

OK, your log looks clean now, so if you're not having any problems with your computer, it's time to secure it against further infection.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Lets reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to clean the restore points.
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
  • Turn ON System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOTon a regular basis
We need to re hide system files.

To do so, please follow the steps below:

  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Put a check by "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Do not show hidden files and folders."
  • Check "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Updating Windows and Internet Explorer

IMPORTANT: You need to update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you're running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed. (Free at Microsoft Office Update).

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

The following are free programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A brief description is included with each item, click on name to go to download site.

  • Adaware SE Personal
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial
  • Spybot S & D
Spybot is a scanner like Adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and protection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here
  • SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes "kill bits" in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
  • IE Spyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones LIST. This means that you can still view the "bad" webpages, but the webpages can't do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies). Use IE Spyad for single account computers, and IE Spyad 2 for multi account computers.
  • Hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
    • Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file, here.
  • If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:

    • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    • Click run
    • In the dialog box, type services.msc
    • hit enter, then locate dns client
    • Highlight it, then double-click it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click ok
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It's very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a LISTing of some, on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - LIST of free Anti virus programs
  • Use a Firewall - I cannot stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
    See here to choose one.
  • Site Advisor This is a utility that can be downloaded and installed. It loads an icon to the taskbar of your browser (versions for IE and Firefox), indicating the trustworthiness of the site you are on. Green for safe, Red for suspicious. Click on the icon to access details that SiteAdvisor has about the site.

Just a final reminder for you.
  • UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
  • Run Spybot and Adaware regularly. (Once a week minimum)
  • It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure you always have the latest security updates installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Stand up and be Counted.
NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.

Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is Smitfraud... please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agencies that something will get done.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

The above is a general post I give when someone's computer is clean. Obviously you have already taken care of some of the issues mentioned, but it is important that you read through them, and address any that you may have missed.

Just a quick note with regard to Ewido. As you are already using McAfee as your primary anti-virus, it is important that you disable Ewido's real time scanner, else you may get conflict problems with McAfee.

To do this, launch Ewido, then click on Shield.
Check below Resident Shield is and ensure it's set to Inactive.
If not, click on it, and it will toggle between Active and Inactive.

After the months trial is up, the real time protection will switch off anyway, also the autoupdate will stop operating. However, you can still update it manually, and the scanner continues to operate fully, so it is well worth keeping as a second "On Demand" scanner.

Lastly, you can delete Smitfraudfix, it is only used for Smitfraud, and is updated regularly, so will soon be out of date and useless for dealing with future infections.

Keep secure.
