Sysprotect and WinAntiVirus popups

Unread postby CBarry » June 22nd, 2006, 1:31 am

I'm experiencing problems with Popups for both SysProtect and WinAntiVirus. It appears many people have had similar issues but to make sure I run the correct utilities I'm requested your assistance.

I have run the suggested utilities mentioned here http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtop ... fac24b6827

I'm also posting a HighJackThis log for your review. I look forward to your suggestions.

Thanks!

Some security programs with active monitoring processes are known to interfere with automatic scanners and can actually prevent HJT fixes from taking effect.

Please turn off or disable any of the following programs you may have,

Windows Defender(Beta2)

1. Click on "Tools"
2. Click on "General Settings"
3. Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
4. Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
5. Click "Save"

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. close HijackThis.

Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  8. Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

*remove all older versions of Java (v1.4.2.3) using Add/Remove Programs after updating to the latest version of JAva.

Requested Logs

Unread postby CBarry » June 25th, 2006, 10:51 pm

agrarianmonk,

Here is the latest HiJackThis log you requested. The machines appears to be behaving much better. I left the machine on over night which normally would result in several popups appearing by morning, however that now does not seem to be the case.

What recommendations would you make to reduce the chances of this type of malware reappearing on this machine, The machine is running Norton Ant-Virus, is not running a personal firewall, IE 6.0.2900.2180 SP2 is being used, and am diligent about installing Windows Updates.

Thanks for all your assistance

Congratulations, your log looks clean! Are you having any other problems?

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

Let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
    1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    2. Restart your computer.

    3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:

To keep your operating system up to date visit
monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners

weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
