Thanks for posting the new log.

Download and install CCleaner. Don't run it yet.

Download CWShredder. Run the program. Update it. Press the Fix button. Exit when done.

Make sure no files are hidden. To do this:

1. Click Start.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. Select the View Tab.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
7. Click Yes to confirm.
8. Click OK.

Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the Task Manager. End Task:

picsvr.exe
exp.exe
wintask.exe
system.mcm

Run and scan with HijackThis. With all other browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and Fix:

Boot into Safe Mode. To do this:

1. Reboot your computer.

3. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Search for and delete these folders:

C:\Program Files\Fln
C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert

Search for and delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\exp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wintask.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmpcpapi.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\getmc40u.dll
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\flncpy.exe

Browse to your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Delete all the files in that folder, do not delete the folder itself. Empty your Recycle Bin. Run CCleaner.

Reboot Windows normally and post a new log please.

Could you also browse to this file:

C:\Documents and Settings\Esteban\snuninst.exe

Right click on it, choose Properties. Let me know what it says for Vendor info in the Version tab please.

Thanks!

Unread postby FLTechChick » May 16th, 2005, 2:27 pm

'KotaGuy,

Hi there, ok did all that and here is the new log. A couple of things. I couldn't find the snuninst.exe anywhere.... Also I don't know if it's related or not, but the windows search function doens't work anymore. I had to search in the winexplorer window to find files.... Should I try to reinstall Norton yet?

Thanks,
Trina

Thanks for posting the new log.

I'll look into the Windows search problem, for now...

Click Start>Run, type in services.msc. Hit enter. In the list of Services, look for .NET Framework Service. Right click on it, choose Properites. Stop the service. Change the Startup to Disabled. Exit the Services Console.

Run and scan with HijackThis. With all other browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and Fix:

O23 - Service: .NET Framework Service (.NET Connection Service) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe (file missing)

Boot into Safe Mode. Search for and delete:

C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe

NOTE!! Do not delete C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe. This is a valid file. Delete only C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe.

Browse to your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Delete all the files in that folder, do not delete the folder itself. Empty your Recycle Bin. Run CCleaner.

Reboot Windows normally and post a new log please.

Hey 'KotaGuy,

Ok so I went through all that except I can't run services. The MMC Console isn't working right... it gripes that the services.msc isn't there or the permissions aren't right and I'm logged in as an admin on the system and it's there in the system 32 folder.... But I did everything else. and here's the log. Beginning to wonder if I shouldn't scrape the whole lot....
what do you think, I'm getting alot of error with the OS now....

Thanks for posting the log.

Can you be a bit more specific about the error messages you are getting? It would help me figure out what we need to do to fix your system up.

Try this for now...

Click Start>Run, type in sc stop .NET Connection Service. Hit Enter. Click Start>Run, type in sc delete .NET Connection Service. Hit Enter.

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot Windows normally and post a new log please.

Try as I may the .net won't work. I ran the sc stop and sc delete and got a quick pop up window that went away too quickly to read. I then booted into safe mode and can't find the file, but the ht log says it's missing, maybe that's why I can't find it...?
I selected the file and ran it and when I rebooted it came back so I did it again and still the same thing. I tried to run services again and this is the error I'm getting....

MMC cannot open the file C:\Windows\system32\services.msc.

'This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because youdo not have sufficent access rights to the file.'

I hope this helps..

It's OK... we'll get this... don't worry :D

Boot into Safe Mode

Print this out or copy it into notepad for reference during the fix.

Run HijackThis. Press the Open the Misc Tools button. Press the Delete an NT Service button. Type the following into the text field... .NET Connection Service

Reboot Windows normally. Scan with HijackThis and post the log.

If that doesnt work, I got a few other things to try ;)

Unread postby FLTechChick » May 17th, 2005, 8:26 pm

Hey 'KotaGuy,

I couldn't get the misc tool to delete the file to start with so I ended up finding a way to go into services through the MMC and was able to disable the .NET service and then the misc tools let me delete the file. Here's the new log file. I haven't tried to get online or reinstall the anti virus yet. Waiting to hear from you. Thanks so much for your continued help...

Good Work! Your log is CLEAN!!

Click Start>Run, type in cleanmgr, hit Enter. Let it scan the C: drive. Make sure the first three boxes are checked and click ok to clean them up. Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reset your System Restore Point. To do this:
  • Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"

Reboot your computer, follow the steps above, this time unchecking the "Turn off System Restore" and reboot.

Try installing your Anti Virus and try to connect to the 'Net as well... let me know how things go. :)

something to ponder

'KotaGuy,

Hey there.... so we are making progress. Did the disk cleanup and all went well. I installed Norton and the first time it gave me an error when trying to post the default rules, I referenced their site and uninstalled and reinstalled and that went well. Here's the catch, it is giving me problems accessing the internet still. I'm not sure if it is because I'm on my work network right now. I'm going to try it from a dsl line when I get home and see if that makes a diff or not. All I'm getting right now is a network detected popup from norton and try as I may it won't go away. I don't want to join the network here so I will have to wait and see if I can hit the net when I get it home later.
Any thoughts on the search item? Do you think the repair function on XP pro disk would help or screw things up? I have been hesitant to try and run it for fear of losing everything in the process.... But it seems to be a symptom of whatever got into this system also the only way to access services is to add it manually to the MMC console and it won't save like that to anywhere. Well I hope I haven't confused the issue, just thought I would update you. I will post again later on tonight with news about net access and see what your thoughts are on the other.

Thank you,
Trina

Hiyas!

One thing you could try is this...

Click Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow(note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow). Hit Enter. This will replace any missing/corrupted system files. You will need you XP disc in your CD-ROM drive for this as it will restore the files from the disc.

Also, click Start>Run, type in regedit, hit Enter. Browse to this Key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoFind

Right click on that Key, choose Export. Name it, ohhh... search. Save it to your desktop. Right click on search.reg and choose Edit. Copy/Paste the contents of that into a reply.

Thanks!

Oh... and let me know how the connection thing works out too.

'KotaGuy,

Well I couldn't find my XP disk so I can't do most of what youtold me til tomorrow. But I'm still having major trouble getting online. Even plugged into the dsl router I still get the annoying and everpresent network detector window. I can only select custom settings which leads me nowhere and then a minute later it comes back up again. This allows me no access to the internet even between popups. Apparently this is some sort of feature that it detects networks, but it doesn't allow me to do anything or set anything. If I don't have the norton installed I can access the net, but I only tried for a quick minute to see if google would come up and it did. I'm hoping that using the XP disk will fix what ever is wrong with the norton also, maybe it's missing something to make it work. I will get the disk and try again tomorrow. Thanks again.... the saga continues.....
