Hi Kelly!

Can I get you to run HJT. Click the Misc Tools button. Then the Uninstall Manager button. Then the Save List button. Save it to your desktop.

Post the Uninstall list in your next reply please.

Hi Kelly.

Sorry for the dealy in a reply... my modem blew up on me early yesterday morning... just got back online now.

Anyways... click Start>Run type in appwiz.cpl and hit Enter. From the list uninstall:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
Microsoft AntiSpyware(This beta is over so the program is useless)
SpyHunter
Starware 4.1.0.0

I also noticed you have a very old version of Norton installed. I suggest you unistall that as well as the scanning engine in it outdated and will not be able to properly detect/clean the newer infections.

To uninstall it... you will need to remove these from the Add/Remove Programs list:

Norton AntiVirus 2003
Norton WMI Update
LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate 2.6 (Symantec Corporation)

Once you have those uninstalled... run HijackThis and do a System Scan only. Place checks beside the following if found:

O23 - Service: SymWMI Service (SymWSC) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe

Close all open browsers and windows and click the Fix button in HijackThis.

Boot into Safe Mode. To do this:

1. Reboot your computer.
2. Tap the F8 button as your computer is booting to bring you to the Advanced Options Menu.
3. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Once in Safe Mode search for and delete these folders if found:

C:\Program Files\Starware
C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
C:\Program Files\SYMNET~1
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04
C:\Program Files\Enigma Software Group
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04

Empty your Recylce Bin.

Reboot Windows normally.

Now... you'll need a new AntiVirus program. I reccomend AVG Free. Download and install the program. Make sure you update it as well. Then do a full system scan with it and let clean whatever it finds.

Download and install Windows Defender. Update it and do a full scan with it as well.

Then you need to update your Java.

Once you have all that done... post a new HijackThis log please.

Hi

Glad you managed to get your computer sorted.

I've done most of what you asked me to do but I couldn't remove the Norton WMI update - it kept saying that it's in use. Also I couldn't download Windows Defender - validation is saying I don't have genuine windows (I inherited the computer).

My new HijackThis log:

Hi Kelly!

Click Start>Run type in services.msc and hit Enter. From the list look for Symantec Event Manager, Symantec Password Validation Service, and SymWMI Service. For each of these... right click on them... choose Properties. Stop the services and change the Startup Type to Disabled.

You should be able to uninstall the last of the Symantec stuff now.

Reboot and post a new HJT log.

Thanks!

Hi KotaGuy

This is Kelly's mum here (I was the one who advised her to get in touch with you guys).

She's been away this week, hence the lack of a reply from her. Hopefully she'll be back in touch with you in the next few days.

Thanks for your help.

Hi

Sorry for delay.

I've done what you suggested above, but am still unable to remove Norton WMI Update.

I've run a new log:

You should be able to get rid of that entry... the 023 for Symantec's WMI service isn't there anymore... try this please...

Run HijackThis... click the Misc Tools Button... then the Uninstall Manager button. In the list look for the Symantec WMI entry and click the Delete this Entry button.

Reboot and it should be gone from Add/Remove now.

Let me know how that goes.
