Unread postby davidwood156 » June 11th, 2006, 2:24 pm

Hi,

Have been suffering from an infection from runsrv32.exe, plus lots of other annoying malware.
I have run spybot, adaware, smitfraudfix and ewido anti-malware 3.5 and think I have managed to get rid of most of the problems.
I would be very grateful if one of you knowledgable chaps from this forum could interpret my hijack this log to see if i've missed anything.
Thanks in advance
Dave.

Hello and Welcome to MR.

Please download Ccleaner and save it to your desktop.
Tutorial for CCleaner
During the installation be sure to UN-check the box for "Ccleaner Yahoo Toolbar" unless you want it
=================================
Download and install Ewido Anti-Malware

During the installation, uncheck the following under Additional Options:
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

Check for updates but do not run it yet.

Note: If you have problems with the updater, you can manually update Ewido.
Download ewido-signatures-full-current.exe from here and save to your Desktop.
All you need to do then is to double-click it, click Install and then when it has finished, Close.

=================================

Make sure that you can see hidden files
" Click Start
" Open My Computer
" Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
" Select the View Tab
" Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders
" Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
" Click Yes to confirm
" Click OK
** These files are hidden to stop you accidentally removing something important.
It is advisable to hide them again after fixing your computer. **

==================================

  • Close all open Explorer windows and browsers/email, etc
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button and when complete
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

  • Check everything EXCEPT Advanced part of the Menu.
  • Click on "Analyze". This process could take a while.
  • If you don't want to loose your login passwords to certain sites, click on Options
  • Select cookies and move the ones you want to keep to the "cookies to keep" section, by highlighting and using the arrows in the middle.
  • Choose Run Cleaner.

  • Under Unwanted Software check all boxes
  • Under What to scan select Scan every file

  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says Perform action on all infections and put a checkmark in the box next to Create encrypted backup, then choose clean and click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save Report.

Click Save Report button and save it to your desktop for easy access.

Now close Ewido-Anti-Malware.

Warning: While the scan is in progress, DO NOT open any folders or the Windows Control Panel !!

davidwood156,
Since you will be in SAFE Mode part of the time and won't have Internet access, you may want to either print this out or save it as a Notepad file on your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Stop, Disable and Delete A Service
Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find the service. The service name is the item in Parentheses in the O23 line.

windows security centre

Click once on the service to highlight it. Click Stop
Right-Click on the service. Click onProperties
Select the General tab. Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side at the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Disabled
Click the Apply tab, then click OK

Delete the Service
Open HiJackThis. Click on Config, Misc Tools, Delete an NT Service
Type windows security centre in the space provided (the name in parentheses in the O23 line) and click OK
The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept.
REBOOT into SAFE MODE
Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file (if it still is present):
C:\WINDOWS\wscntify.exe

REBOOT back into Normal Mode

About Messenger Plus
I notice you have Messenger Plus installed. Do you recall whether you allowed the "sponsor software" when you installed it?
If you allowed it, or don't recall, we should check for the LOP infection that goes with it.
Every update of Messenger Plus will invite the "sponsor software" again, and a new chance for infection.
Because of that, I would recommend that you Uninstall Messenger Plus by going to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and choosing Remove. Whether you remove it or not is up to you.
Whether you remove Messenger Plus or not, we need an answer to the best of your recollection on the sponsor software issue, because Uninstalling will not remove the associated infection.
-----------------------------------------------------------
About Kontiki
Kontiki is also an optional removal. It does perform tracking of deliveries, and is reputed to deliver popups as well.
The level of snooping is less than clear. My advice would be to remove it if you don't use it. It would likely show up under the name Kontiki or KService in Add/Remove Programs.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply, and let me know about the details on the optional items.

Hi again

Have deleted the windows secirity centre service and removed messenger plus.
I can't remember if I accepted the sponsor software on install, however when I removed messenger I got a message saying the sponsor software was not installed, so possibly not.
Also, couldn't find anything relating to Kontiki in add/remove, could it be called anything else?

My new hjt log is below,

Thanks again for taking the time to look at it.

Dave

davidwood156,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner
Start CCleaner. Click on the Tools block on the left. Choose Uninstall, and it will bring up the list of installed programs.
Click on the button in the lower right labeled Save as Text file, and save the default file install.txt to your desktop.
Paste the contents of that install.txt file into your reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
You have startup.exe running at startup. Is that Mike Lin's startup program? If not, can you tell me what it is?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [MessengerPlusUninstall] C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe /C "C:\DOCUME~1\DAVIDW~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\MsgPlusUninst.bat"
O16 - DPF: Yahoo! Chess - http://download.games.yahoo.com/games/c ... /ct2_x.cab
O16 - DPF: {7F8C8173-AD80-4807-AA75-5672F22B4582} (ICSScanner Class) - http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/promot ... r37380.cab

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply, along with the contents of the CCleaner install.txt file.

Hi again,

New HJT log and copy of install file from ccleaner.

I have no idea what the startup.exe is in my startup folder, should I remove it?

Cheers
Dave.

davidwood156,
Making good progress. Nice work.

Please find the actual startup.exe file (not the link), wherever it is, right click and choose properties. Tell me what info it gives you about company, size, etc.
------------------------------------------------------------
Update your Java.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  • Close any programs you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Click Add/Remove Programs.
  • Highlight any item that looks like Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2 or J2RE in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment, and install it to your computer.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [kdx] C:\WINDOWS\kdx\KHost.exe -all
O23 - Service: KService - Kontiki Inc. - C:\Program Files\KService\KService.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Stop, Disable and Delete A Service
Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find the service.

KService - Kontiki Inc.

Click once on the service to highlight it. Click Stop
Right-Click on the service. Click onProperties
Select the General tab. Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side at the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Disabled
Click the Apply tab, then click OK

Delete the Service
Open HiJackThis. Click on Config, Misc Tools, Delete an NT Service
Type KService - Kontiki Inc. in the space provided and click OK
The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept.
REBOOT into SAFE MODE
Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following folder (if it still is present):
C:\Program Files\KService\ <== this folder
REBOOT back into Normal Mode
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply, along with any info about startup.exe.

davidwood156,
Your log looks clean. Nice work. Just a little clean up and a bit of added security to go.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan. Open the CCleaner program.
( Do not use the Issues block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).
  • Select all Temp Files for Removal.
Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
  • Clear the Prefetch Folder. Click on the Custom button.
Click Add Folder. When the dialog comes up, go find C:\Windows\Prefetch\ and click OK.
A warning will come up saying that the folder will be emptied upon cleaning. Are you sure, etc. Click Yes.

Disable WinXP System Restore
Disable your System Restore to remove malware files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing them. The only way to erase these files is to temporarily disable System Restore. You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, put a Check mark in the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
If you are not prompted to reboot, do it on your own.
-----------------------------------------------------------
After the Reboot,
Enable WinXP System Restore
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, Clear the Check mark beside the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
The Disable/Re-enable System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only once after the removal of malware.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from inadvertently connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request back to your own address (127.0.0.1).
If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

davidwood156,

You should update your Windows XP to SP2 when you can. This fixes a large number of security holes in your system.
It is a very large download, and is not feasible with Dial-Up.
If there is a problem with getting the SP2 to take, see here : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/expert/atkin_04nov23.mspx

You can order an update Service Pack 2 CD from MicroSoft here : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

Very glad we could help out.
