System crashes ! my hijackthis log

Unread postby Freddy » June 8th, 2006, 2:25 pm

Hi, a few weeks ago my computer started to have problems. First, showing "Dr Watson has encountered an error and has to be closed", and then the system crashed. This started to happen more often. Also the system is not accepting the order of the "quick launch" icons, when I reboot they are again as before my changes. Today and after a crash, I rebooted and then the wireless configuration of "acer e-net management was gone" and I cannot use it anymore. So this thing is eating my system slowly.

Antivirus updated all the time: Avast freeware.
I ran Spybot S&D several times since this started. First time found coolwwwsearch entries, and from then nothing. Also I inmunized the system.

I ran Ad-aware several times on these weeks. First found lots of things. Now last time found nothing. When this program is scanning then my antivirus wakes up and tells me I have a virus. It´s like if Ad-aware is unmasking it. The thing it finds is WIn32:Trojan-gen. {UPX!}

I run a square and it removed a lot of things, but mostly Ares (p2p program). It doesn´t even appear in my Add/Remove programs list.

Thanks for your help.

Finally, this is my hijack log:

Hi Freddy,

Your log has no startling visible malware, a resource hog in a program that does not need to run at start-up, a monitor program and a video player that is no longer in favour.

  1. You have evidence of Real player on your machine
    1. If it is RealOne Player then I would recommend its removal using Add or Remove Programs.
    2. If you prefer to keep it OR it is the Real Player Classic then I suggest you navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\ and rename the Realsched.exe file to Realsched.exe.old
    3. For further information see this post
  2. With all other windows closed, start your HijackThis and click on Scan
    1. Click in the check-box to the left of each of the following entries, if found
      • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
      • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
      • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" –osboot

This next one is a bit of a resource hog and is not needed but it is your choice
      • O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
    2. Select Fix Checked

We will now do a basic clean up followed by an Ewido to check what else might be lurking.
  3. Download CCleaner
    1. Select the Download Latest Version link (top of green column) and save to your desktop
    2. Right-click the ccsetup127.exe file on your desktop and select Open
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions through to the Install Options page. I suggest you only retain the following 2 options
      • Add Desktop Shortcut
      • Automatically check for updates etc…
    4. Click Install
      To setup CCleaner
    5. Click on the CCleaner icon on your desktop.
    6. From the menu on the left select Options
    7. Now select Advanced. On the right remove the check against Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
    8. Select Cookies. When CCleaner is run it will remove all of the cookies in the left window; if there are cookies that you wish to retain then select them and transfer them to the right window. Multiple selections can be made by holding down the Ctrl key before selecting.
    9. Select Cleaner from the left menu and the Windows tab
      • Under Internet Explorer place ticks in all but the last box
      • Under Windows Explorer tick the last two only
      • Under System tick all boxes
      • There is no need to tick anything under Advanced
    10. From the menu on the left click on Analyze
    11. When the analysis is complete, click on Run Cleaner and OK at the next screen.
    12. Close CCleaner
  4. Download the Ewido security suite here the suite is fully functional on a trial basis
    1. When installing, under Additional Options REMOVE the checks on Install background guard and Install scan via context menu
    2. Launch ewido, there should be a big e icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    3. The program will prompt you to update; click the "OK" button. The program will now go to the main screen
    4. On the left hand side of the main screen click Update and then click Start update
    5. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    6. When the update has completed click on scanner
      • Click on Settings
      • Confirm that all check boxes are ticked
      • and scan every file is selected
      • Click OK
    7. Exit ewido for now.

I suggest that you print out the following instructions or highlight the remainder and save to a WordPad file on your desktop as you will no longer have an internet connection until we have finished with Ewido
  5. Physically disconnect your computer from the internet by unplugging the lead.
  6. Reboot the computer into safe mode using a clean boot sequence
    1. Select the Start button and Turn Off Computer
    2. Select the Turn Off option, when the computer has shut down switch off the power supply.
    3. After 10 seconds, restore the power supply and switch on the computer
      • Some computers have a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS. Others may not let you know what is happening.
      • As soon as the BIOS loads, or a single Beep is heard then begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
      • If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. If this happens, restart the computer and try again.
      • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, select Safe mode and then press Enter.
    4. When in Safe mode you will have your desktop with the word ‘Safe’ in the 4 corners.
  7. To reduce the chance of AntiSpyware interfering with the fixes, please stop all antispyware on your computer. If you right-click on the icon in the systems tray you will find an option to ‘exit’. When you reboot, this will all return to normal.
  8. We will now run Ewido
    1. Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!
    2. Open the programme by clicking on the large e
      • Select the Update option from the left and then Start Update on the right.
    3. When the update has completed click on scanner
      • Click on Settings
      • Confirm that all check boxes are ticked
      • and scan every file is selected
      • Click OK
    4. Select Complete system scan and let the program scan the machine
    5. If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification.
      • Select Remove as the action
      • Place a check against Perform action with all infections.
    6. Repeat the scan until there is no detected malware
    7. When you have the clean result from Ewido click on the Save Report button at the bottom of the screen and save the file to the desktop.
    8. Exit Ewido
  9. From your log it would appear that you have not got a Firewall. I can not stress too much how important this is in your protection against malware. There are many paid and free versions available for your use but in the interim, if you are only using the Windows Firewall then I would suggest that you install the following free program and disable the Windows firewall, this is because the Windows firewall is a one-way firewall, the following firewall protects against outgoing as well as incoming threats.
  10. Please carry out a new HjackThis scan
  11. Please post
    • The new HijackThis log
    • The Ewido report
    • Comments on the computers behaviour now

Thanx, Whisperer...It will take some time to follow all your instructions, but I´ll be back posting what you are asking in a couple of days.
But before I need some answers because I´m quite ignorant on these issues:

1. I cannot phisically disconnect my computer from Internet, I have a wireless connection and I cannot go away from range because....I´m floating!!!...yes, I work onboard a ship with satellital connection to the Internet and a wireless intranet. Is it OK with disabling the wireless from Windows ?

2. Could you explain me step by step how to do this ?..."Reboot the computer into safe mode using a clean boot sequence. "

3. I have the Windows Firewall running. I would like to do what you mention about running another firewall...but isn´t it very difficult to configure ?...all that port numbers for me are chinese.

4. Is all this malware I have in my computer self-replicating ?...I mean is there a possibility that is going inside the ship´s intranet to other systems ?...no signs of it until now.

Thanks again

Hi Freddy,

I will try and answer your questions for you

I cannot phisically disconnect my computer from Internet, I have a wireless connection and I cannot go away from range because....I´m floating!!!...yes, I work onboard a ship with satellital connection to the Internet and a wireless intranet. Is it OK with disabling the wireless from Windows ?
Yes, disable the connection from within windows is fine. The reason why I asked for it is because I have asked you to switch off all of your anti-spyware protection at paragraph 7 above.

Could you explain me step by step how to do this ?..."Reboot the computer into safe mode using a clean boot sequence. "
A clean boot sequence is where the computer is switched right off for a time to allow the computer memory to clear completely. If you follow the steps 6a to 6d you will achieve what I want – a clean boot sequence.

I have the Windows Firewall running. I would like to do what you mention about running another firewall...but isn´t it very difficult to configure ?...all that port numbers for me are chinese.
No, the firewall that I offered you was ZoneAlarm, this is very easy to set up, you can accept the default options with no problems.

Is all this malware I have in my computer self-replicating ?...I mean is there a possibility that is going inside the ship´s intranet to other systems ?...no signs of it until now.
You have no visible nasty spyware that would replicate to the Intranet, but thank you for letting me know the situation.

If there are any other queries please do not hesitate to ask

Hello Whisperer, I did everything you said.

When I first ran Hijackthis, one of the entries you asked me to remove was already gone (the one related with realplayer)....may be gone because of renaming the file to .exe.old ??

The computer didn´t show any other problems. The Dr Watson seems to work fine. The only thing is that when I shutdown my computer I have to wait for the windows explorer to be closed, it appears as non responding.

The ewido suite found one infection in safe mode.

Here is the log:

I installed Zonealarm, it´s on now. I received a notification from my antivirus program which says that the "transparent mode" is not available because of incompatibility with avast, and that they are working on it.

:P Thanks again for all your good help

Hi Freddy,

Well done, but it does not appear that ZoneAlarm is running at the moment.
  1. Please open Zone Alarm
    • Click on Overview in the left menu.
    • Select the Preferences tab
    • In the middle of the page under General ensure that there is a tick in the box against Load ZoneAlarm at startup
    • Leave ZoneAlarm running at all times.
  2. I am not entirely sure that you are clean as yet so we will dig a little deeper. I would like to find out a bit more about a file on your computer.
    • Please navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ locate ToolBand.dll and right-click on the file
    • From the drop-down menu select Properties and click the Version tab
    • Please make a note of any information within the Other version information , in particular any detail about the Company.
    • Click OK to close the Properties box.
  3. I would now like you to submit this file for further investigation to two specialist sites who will analyse it for us.
    • First go to here and in the first box copy your thread identification
    • Right-click this url http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10613 and select Copy Link location now paste that into the box
    • Click the Browse button to the second window and navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ locate ToolBand.dll and click on the file
In the large window enter as requested by Grinler/Whisperer
    • Now go to this site and right at the top select Browse .
    • As before navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ locate ToolBand.dll and click on the file, they will email you the response, please copy the results back to this thread
  4. Now we will look deeper at your computer, first we will use an online scanner then a downloaded program.
  5. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
    1. Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
    2. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes .
    3. The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
    4. Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
    5. Now click on Scan Settings and ensure that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
        • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
        • Scan Archives
        • Scan Mail Bases
    6. Click OK
    7. Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
    8. The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    9. Now click on the Save as Text button:
    10. Save the file to your desktop.
    11. Copy and paste that information in your next post.
  6. Download Silentrunners.zip from here and save it to your Desktop.
    1. First you will need to extract the file(s).
      • Right click on the zipped folder and from the new menu click on Extract All
      • In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next
      • Click on Next again.
      • In the final window, click on Finish
      • You should now see the contents of the Silent Runners folder - Silent Runnners.vbs.
    2. Double click Silent Runners.vbs to run it.
      IMPORTANT
Some real-time protection programs may warn you of a possibly malicious script being detected when you run Silent Runnners.vbs, allow it to run. Alternatively, disable any script blocking software you have running before you start.
    3. You will receive a prompt: Do you want to skip supplementary searches? - click NO
    4. Once the All Done! prompt flashes up, open the Startup Program text file that has appeared in the folder and copy & paste it into your next reply.
  7. Please post
    • Information about the Toolband.dll from the properties box
    • The Kaspersky log
    • The Startup Program text file from the SilentRunners scan.
  8. The two logs will take a little while to check over but at the end of it we should know how your computer is

Hi Whisperer, I looked for the file you mentioned but didn´t find it. The most close is "ActiveToolBand.dll". Do I have to carry out all your suggestions with this one ?...did it change the name by itself ?...I don´t really like that thing of "active"

Last night Dr Watson collapsed again.

The firewall was loading already at start up, the reason you didn´t see it was that I installed it exactly after running the Hijackthis and logging.

Thanks again

Freddy,

Do a new HijackThis scan and post the results back here, do this now please

Carry out the rest of the fix by using the Kaspersky scan and the Silentrunners scan and post those results back here when complete.

Freddy,

Thanks for the HJT log, I will check it through but I notice that the file is there so it must have been hidden when you were trying to get its properties earlier, we will try again.
  1. Once you have completed the Kaspersky and SilentRunners scans, I will need you to ensure that any hidden and system files are visible to the system.
    1. Select the Start button and from the available options
    2. Right-click the My Computer option.
    3. Select Explore from the drop-down menu
    4. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. from the new window
    5. Select the View Tab.
    6. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders by clicking in the check-box to its left
    7. Remove the check against Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option, again by clicking the check-box to its left.
    8. Click Yes to confirm.
    9. Click OK.
    10. Windows does not search for hidden or system files by default so
      • Click the Start button and select Search choosing For Files or Folders
      • From the dialogue box select All files and folders and at the bottom select More Advanced Options
      • Place selection ticks in the check-boxes for
        • Search system folders
        • Search hidden files and folders
        • Search subfolders
    11. Close the search dialogue box
  2. Now we will have another look for that rogue file
  4. Please post the Kaspersky and SilentRunners results when you have them and follow-up with the results from the email when you have that

Hello Whisperer, I did what you said but the file is not appearing. But now, with the hidden and system files visible, I had 2 results for the keyword "toolband".

1. The file I mentioned before, ActiveToolBand.dll , 20 kB.
Description: ActiveToolBand Module
Company: HiTRUST
Version: 1.20.0.0

On "Other Versions"
Product Version: 1,20,0,0
File Version: 1,20,0,0

2. A zip folder called coolWWWSearchtoolband.zip, but this one is in the Spybot S&D Recovery folder with the others it found the first time I ran it. SoI guess there´s no actual harm on it.

The Kandinski didn´t work, tried several times, it loads the activex but not the updates for definitions. So I did the Symantec On Line Scan and results were Clean: zero virus.

The silentrunners log :
