Hi ronyap,

I'd be happy to help you. As I'm an undergrad, my posts will be reveiwed by an instructor before I post them to you.

I'll review you log and get back with you with what we need to do. One question, What symptoms are you experienceing to make you believe you have a virus (symptoms help evaluate sometimes ;) ).

Hiya,

The thing that makes me think I have a virus is because my brother has recntly clicked on one of those links on MSN which says something like:

'Get the best MSN names here at www. blah blah.com'

He is only 8 so he doesnt know much, shame i wasnt around at the time to see what he was doing. So, this is worrying me. =).

Thanks

Hi ronyap,

Please read my instructions before you begin. If you find something you don't understand, come back here and ask!

There are (or seem to be) 2 firewalls and virus scanners. It seem that an attempt to uninstall McAfee was made, but was not entirely successful. If you are trying to and having trouble uninstalling McAfee, I could get you some instructions. You should only be running 1 each, firewall and realtime virus monitor.

Your java is out of date, current version is 1.4.2_07

Update Java - Download and install the newest version from here.
Then go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs.
Search for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
Click that entry and then click on the Uninstall button.

Your Hijackthis is located directly in Program Files. Please Add a new folder to Program Files called Higackthis. Move Hijackthis.exe into that new folder.
Run Hijackthis (from it's new location). Press Do a system scan only (if that button is not available, press Scan)
Place a check (tick) beside each listed item below.
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
Then, with all other windows and apps closed, click Fix checked.

Run an online virus scan called Kapersky from here.

1. Click on Kapersky Online Scanner
2. A new smaller window will pop up. Press on Accept. After reading the contents.
3. Now Kapersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
4. Click on Next">Scan Settings, and make sure the database is set to extended. And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
5. Then click on My Computer. And the scan will start.
6. Once finished, save a log as .txt file to the desktop. And restart.

Please post the KAV log and another Hijackthis log.

Scan process completed.

Thanks. I have now changed from AVG to Avast coz I think its better. Since Avast doesnt have a Firewall, I think I should install back McAfee Personal Desktop Firewall, the one with the icon as the blueshield and an orange fire. NOT the program with the RED box and White 'M' as the icon, with all stuff, like email scanners etc.

Do you think this is Ideal? Thanks. If I still have traces of AVG can you tell me. Some other information I might need to inform you...I have before installed Zonealarm Trial, but it doesnt look like its here anymore? So thats good. Yes, and I also have Spybot Search and Destroy.

Another point I want to make. In the KAV scan, nearly all the Viruses it has found is the setup for the CCleaner, except for the last one, which I dont know what it is. Why is this? Im pretty sure CCleaner is a safe program.

It always says 'not-a-virus Risk tool' after the Virus name wat does this mean?

Thanks again :D

Please, I have just realised the last line on my Kapersky Scan. What is this 'Porn-Dialer.Win32.PluginAccess.gen' ? I have done some research and have found out that it is one of the top 20 of Kapersky's list. My A2 centre cannot find it, why? Is it A2 fault or Kapersky? I havent scanned with Avast yet... but please someone.

Hi ronyap,

As you suspected, the Ccleaner files that Kaspersky found are false positives. The "Not-a-virus is a heuristic hit (it does some things that a virus vould also do). Some of those endup being FP.

The last one in the list is in your system restore which we will take care of in a little while.

Your log looks clean, let's work on keeping it that way.

Clear old restore points - first Disable System Restore
Right click My Computer >> Properties >> Performance Tab
Then press Alt-F then click the Troubleshooting Tab.
Check Disable System Restore
Click Ok
Click Ok (again)
Reboot

Then enable system restore
Right click My Computer >> Properties >> Performance Tab
Then press Alt-F then click the Troubleshooting Tab.
Uncheck Disable System Restore
Click Ok
Click Ok (again)
Reboot

As you have the antivirus and are installing a firewall, the installation instructions (below) are included for informational purposes.

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you are still having:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the OK button to apply the changes and exit the Internet Properties page.
  2. Use Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has anti-virus software running. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs (select and use only one):
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  3. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  4. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  5. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  6. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found above:
  7. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  8. Update Java - Download and install the newest version from here.
Then go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs.
Search for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
Click that entry and then click on the Uninstall button.
  9. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: So how did I get infected in the first place?

This is always a good read.

Thanks, I have done what you told me. Can you just tell me if Hijackthis covers 3 accounts? Coz, if i run HJT on my account, will it show stuff on other accounts as well? Or do I have to do a HJT scan for each account?

Thanks

Hi ronyap,

As long as you run Hijackthis from an account with admin privileges, it should be good, Ccleaner however would need to run for each account.

The NSIS are part of Ccleaner and are false positives. And, forgot this, should run Ccleaner, delete the stuff older than 48 hours. I actually like Atf-cleaner better.

Download ATF-Cleaner.exe from here.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox and/or Opera browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
