Exploit Beehappyy.biz?

Unread postby Trance Kuja » May 29th, 2006, 3:14 am

Hello. Recently I've been getting these system pop ups every so often. They are small and usually only say something along the lines of, "irc.something." My PC has also been buzzing alot, while normally it's pretty quiet, and my CPU uage seems to be up. I scanned my PC, and apparently I have "Exploit Highconvert.com" and "Exploit Beehappyy.biz". I followed the directions exactly to remove them, but they still show up and it doesn't seem better. I've searched around, but there doesn't seem to be any information on these things at all. Are these new threats? I know I'm supposed to post the HJT log, but I just wanted to see if I would be wasting anyone's time first. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Howdy and welcome to Malware Removal Trance Kuja :)

I just wanted to see if I would be wasting anyone's time first

Certainly Not ! Post a log and I will gladly take a look thorugh it for you.

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the first button - Do a system scan and save a logfile. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Howdy there Trance Kuja

Your computer is in need a little TLC but it is nothing that we can not sort for you. Please make sure that each step is complete before moving on to the next one. May I suggest that you either print out these instructions or save them as a text file with Notepad or your default text editor to your desktop as we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix. If you are having any difficulty understanding or following any part of the instructions then please feel free to enquire so that we can clarify things in more detail. Take your time with this fix . I would suggest reading through it all before proceeding.

Can I just ask if you have the registered version or free version of FlashGet download manager. The reason why I ask this is because the free version is bundled with know adware known as cydoor, more information here

I also notice that you have norton and avg on your system, running two anti virus checkers at once can cause system slowdowns and other conflicts. I would advise that you choose one and uninstall the other.

Lets ensure that all hidden files are set to show
Open the Windows Explorer - Tools - Folder Options - and select the View tab:
Scroll down to where it says "Hidden Files and Folders" section.
Now select the option to "Show hidden files and folders"
Take the tick out of "Hide file extensions for known file types"
Take the tick out of "Hide protected operating system files" Click on OK and Apply
Next Click the "Apply to all Folders" button. Close Windows Explorer.

Next we need to stop a couple of processes that are running on your computer

To do this...
Startup HJT and select the 4th button entitled "Open the misc tools section"
Under where it says system tools click on "Open process manager"
Now look for the following processes one by one in the list below, once you find them highlight them then click on the "killl process" button
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Firewall.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinSecure.exe

One you have done this click on the "Back" button in HJT (bottom right) then click on the "scan" button
Make sure you close any windows that are open or minumised

Now select the followng entries by placing a tick in the left hand check box

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2F364306-AA45-47B5-9F9D-39A8B94E7EF7} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {DE9C389F-3316-41A7-809B-AA305ED9D922} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Firewall.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\Firewall.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinSecure] C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinSecure.exe
O16 - DPF: {DBA230D1-8467-4e69-987E-5FAE815A3B45} -

Once you have selected all entries then click once on the "fix checked" button to clear the entries from your log

Please re-start your computer in safe mode - You may want to print the rest of these instructions from here onwards
To do so, reboot your computer and repeatedly tap the F8 whilst your computer is booting up (just before the MS Windows flag screen appears) until a menu appears. Once you see the menu select the option to start the computer in safe mode. (It might take more than go to access the menu if you have not done this before, just simply reboot the machine again and repeat the steps)

Next we need to locate the following Files
Once you find them (if they exist), click on the file to highlight it first, then press and hold down the shift key then press delete at the same time to bypass your recycle bin
--> C:\WINDOWS\system32\Firewall.exe
--> C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinSecure.exe

Now reboot your computer into normal operating mode, generate and post a fresh HJT log as a reply to this post, do not start a new topic! thank you.

Thank you again for your help, I really appreciate it. You know, that's exactly what must have caused all of this. I have the free version of FlashGet. I use it quite often, and the other day I got a message saying there was a new version of it. I had never upgraded it before, so I figured it was time to. So I'm guessing downloading that did this. I'm really surprised. Also, I've been using AVG for a long time now, I thought I had gotten rid of Norton's. I'll have to check again, thank you. Well, anyway, I followed all of the directions. Howdy there Trance Kuja

Your HJT log is looking close to clear from any signs of malware, just one entry to clear out

RE: flashget (I presume you have now have the registered version?) If you are still using the free version, and do want to remove flashget let me know and we can remove it for you.

Open HJT by double clicking on the icon and select the second button entitled "do a system scan only".
Make sure you close any windows that are open or minumised

Now select the followng entries by placing a tick in the left hand check box

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

Once you have selected all entries then click once on the "fix checked" button to clear the entries from your log

Below is my general speech, feel free to read it through, if you have any more questions please feel free to ask them. Please advise on any problems that you may still be experiencing.

First lets rehide your System Files

  • ClickStart.
  • Open My Computer.
  • SelectTools menu
  • Click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Uncheck Show hidden files and folders in the Hidden files and folders section.
  • Select Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Check the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
  • ClickYes.
  • Click OK

Next lets reset your system restore points please follow these simple steps in order:

  • Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Clickthe System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

    Restart your computer

  • Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-clickMy Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click theSystem Restore tab.
  • Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then clickOK.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Make sure you are protected with a known anti-virus checker and a firewall
Windows XP will supply its own firewall but it will only monitor traffic in one direction

Recommended Anti-Virus Programs

There are many antivirus products out there, and at first, with there being so many different products it may look confusuing to you, some are free products and others are fully licienced products. It is up to you which you go for. For free antivirus product I would be looking at either Avast Home edition or AVG Free edition. If you are going to be looking at fully licienced software then I would seriously consider either Nod32 or kaspersky Antivirus products, both are excellent in their job of keeping viruses at bay.

Recommended Firewalls

Firewalls.... A firewall serves as a program that monitors ports, connections and programs, both incomming and outgoing from your computer. Windows does come with its own firewall but unfortunatly it only monitors traffic in one direction. As a result we advise that you install your own independant firewall. Two good firewalls you can choose from (both are free) are Sunbelt Kerio Firewall and also Zonealarm As with the above anti virus packages, both are excellent in their job.

Please note.... only ever install one anti virus product and one firewall, if you try running more than one antivirus on your computer they will conflct and cause problems with each other. Once you have these products installed and on board your computer the next thing is to update your anti virus, this will check for the latest virus definitions so that your anti virus can detect the latest viruses. One you have updated then you should run a full complete scan on your computer, this may take some time but it is highly advisable that you let this finish on its own accord.

Next, if they're not already present, I would reccomend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (Unlike firewalls and virus checkers you can run more than one application at once, feel free to download ALL of the below if you wish)

  • Ad-Aware SE - This is a program that scans for and removes known spyware from your machine.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Spybot is a tool like Ad-Aware SE whereas it seeks out and removes known spyware from your machine. These two tools (Ad-Aware & spybot) are perfect complements to each other as one will most always find something the other missed.
  • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machines.
  • IE_Spyad - Works by placing known "bad" sites into your Internet Explorer "Restricted Zones" prohibiting them from doing potentially problematic things to your computer.

For added protection you may also like to add a host file, for more information regarding host files read here

Once you have installed and updated any malware solution tools you must remember to update regularly, I would advise at least a manual check of once a week as well as any auto scheduled checks.

Take care and happy surfin......

Hello again. I followed the rest of the instructions, and everything seemed to be fine again. Then I found the Norton's and I uninstalled it, and uninstalled FlashGet too. But now my PC is constantly loading again and buzzing. I made another log, could you just tell me if everything is right?

Howdy there

Im not seeing anything else malicious in your log
Im going to clear up a few reminants of the programs you have uninstalled..
Please note that some of these entries in this fix may no longer exist
If they are not present simply move on to the next step inline
Also can you make sure that hidden files are still set to show as mentioned in previous post

I can still see a fair bit of Norton in your system, for the complete uninstalation of norton I would suggest following the instructions here and running step 2 --> Uninstall Norton

First I would like you to run a search on your computer for a file to see wether a file exist or not

Go to start menu - next select the search icon (the magnifying glass) and select the option for "all files and folders"
Now click on the more advanced options (near the bottom) and place a check in the following
--> Search system folders
--> Search hidden files and folder
--> Search subfolders

Now, in the search box in the top box where it says "a word or phrase in the file" put the file name in listed below then hit the search button
make sure that you type in the filename exactly as is it shown ! - the best way is to copy and paste it in to make sure that you avoid any errors.

--> msgrmate.dll

If the above file is found I want you to note down the location of this file.
Next I want you to upload it to virustotal
Click on the choose button and navigate to the file we have just searched for, once done hit the send button and wait for the file to be scanned for any viruses. Let me know the results in the next post.

Now lets clear up Flashget......

Open HJT by double clicking on the icon and select the second button entitled "do a system scan only".
Make sure you close any windows that are open or minumised

Now select the followng entries by placing a tick in the left hand check box

O2 - BHO: IeCatch2 Class - {A5366673-E8CA-11D3-9CD9-0090271D075B} - C:\PROGRA~1\FlashGet\jccatch.dll
O3 - Toolbar: FlashGet Bar - {E0E899AB-F487-11D5-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - C:\PROGRA~1\FlashGet\fgiebar.dll
O8 - Extra context menu item: Download All by FlashGet - C:\Program Files\FlashGet\jc_all.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: Download using FlashGet - C:\Program Files\FlashGet\jc_link.htm
O9 - Extra button: FlashGet - {D6E814A0-E0C5-11d4-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - C:\PROGRA~1\FlashGet\flashget.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: &FlashGet - {D6E814A0-E0C5-11d4-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - C:\PROGRA~1\FlashGet\flashget.exe

Once you have selected all entries then click once on the "fix checked" button to clear the entries from your log

Once complete, reboot your computer into safe mode (follow the steps in the earlier post if unsure) navigate and delete the following folder
--> C:\Program Files\FlashGet

Now reboot your computer and allow it to start normaly again - Let me know how things are running and send me the results from virus total

Thanks - Dorian
