help with my log

Unread postby mschroe919 » May 9th, 2005, 10:52 am

This is the problem ,
When I open Word, I get a message from Norton saying my live updates aren't up to date. So I run it, but it fails mid-try.
Also:
When I open up Norton, it says my emails are not being scanned. BUT when I go to options and look at the settings, it appears they are being scanned. ???

Here is our LOG, Thanks again:

Hello,

Download Ccleaner
And install it to your desktop.
Note do not run this tool yet, we’ll use this tool later on.

As we going to do this fix in safe mode I’d like you to reboot in to safe mode.

    *Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.(a black and white screen)
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    *press Enter.

Note: in the following step we will also remove spykiller, it’s known for its false positives

Open HijackThis
Go to ‘config’
Go to ‘misc tools’
Press the button ‘open uninstall manager’
In the list find:
Web Search Toolbar
Press ‘delete this item’.
Repeat that for the following items:
Lycos Sidesearch
eSyndicate
SpyKiller

Close Hijack this and reboot again in safe mode

Now start Hijack This
Choose do a scan only

And put a check at the following items: IF PRESENT.

Thanks for your reply and help. The only thing here I forgot to mention is I am dealing with a woman who is smart, but not into PC's. And she is 600 miles from here and I am working with her by phone. She will be able to follow all. The only thing she might be a little worried about is the Ccleaner and making and finding a .BAT file. So we will see when she gets back to me.
Thanks again

I am very happy to tell you. those are the two most important things, because there is really a lot going on in the temp files.
Also the findfile is very important.....

good luck

Thanks again, can you help us understand the Ccleaner?

When we open the program, what do we check and what do we not check?
Or do we run cleaner with nothing checked?

Also what are we doing here:

Open Notepad, copy and past the text from the box below in a new notepad file
Save it on your desktop
And save it as FindFile.bat
filetype: all files
Code:

dir < C:\WINNT\system32\t?skmgr.exe> /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Close Notepad
Doubleclick FindFile.bat
It will open a notepad file. Place the content of that file here in your answer using ‘add reply’.

No problem...........

start ccleaner the way it comes certain things are checked and some not just press the button in the right bottom corner...clean

then it will start working when it's finished you click the button in the right top corner.(close)

that is how ccleaner works ...pretty easy ..i guess

And now about the notepad file

Open Notepad,(you have an new notepadfile in front of you now) copy and past the text from the box (which is the green text) below in this new notepad file

Code: Select all

dir < C:\WINNT\system32\t?skmgr.exe> /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Save the file with this text on your desktop
And save it as FindFile.bat
filetype: all files

Close Notepad.

Now you go to your desktop where this file will be now and you doubleclick it,.........the name of the file you just saved is named findfile.bat
Now doubleclick FindFile.bat

that action will open a notepad file.

and all you have to do is placing the content of that file here in your answer using ‘add reply’.

I hope i made it clear for you.

yes you made it clear and she claims nothing happens with the .bat file thing. And I don't think she knows how to get the CC. So I told her to do all the rest and send another file. Maybe you can tell me if enough was done to get her going. She says it is working better. I am afraid if she doesn't get her norton running it will get infected again. She trys to update norton and it says the update files are missing. Does this sound like a problem for norton to answere?
I would like her do do away with norton, but being a company pc can't do it. Please advise
