Hi ccinmfd ,

Welcome back to Malware Removal Forums.

As we work together to resolve your problem please read the instructions carefully. You may wish to print them off or copy them into Notepad.
If you have question please don't hesitate to ask
The instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
Post your replies to this thread.

Since there may other issues with your system please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean."

Ready? Let's go.
====================

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
====================

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.
Please post rapport.txt along with a new HJT log in your next reply.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi ccinmfd,

You have been hit with smitfraud. :x

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.
====================

I see you have ewido already installed.

OpenEwido Anti-Malware

Check for updates
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once finished updating, close Ewido.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido manual updates. Make sure to close Ewido before installing the update.

Do not run ewido yet
====================

Now reboot your computer
As soon as it starts to boot, rapidly press the f8 key.
Select Safe Mode from the menu
If you are still unsure, see here
=====================

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
=====================

Navigate to C:\Windows\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

====================

Run ewido Malware Remover

Click on Scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Now close ewido security suite.

Warning: While the scan is in progress, DO NOT open any folders or the Windows Control Panel !!
====================

Reboot your PC in Normal Mode

====================

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter.
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Note: If you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

====================

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner using Internet Explore

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

====================

Please let me know how your system is now behaving and post:
c:\rapport.txt
Ewido log
A new HijackThis log
Kaspersky scan results

You may need multiple post since some logs can be long.

Thanks,

Hi ccinmfd,

Everything thing is looking really good. Not sure why Kapersky gave you that message. Where you using Internet Explore or FireFox?

Lets try using another Online scanner called Panda.

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.

1. Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
2. A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
3. Enter your Country
4. Enter your State/Province
5. Enter your e-mail address and click send
6. Select either Home User or Company
7. Click the big Scan Now button
8. If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
9. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
10. Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
11. Post Panda scan results in your next reply
====================

Thanks,
Rogue

ccinmfd, That would be great if you could run Panda. I want to make sure your system is clean, not just clean of your original symptoms.

update on Panda ...

Unread postby ccinmfd » May 30th, 2006, 8:26 am

OK ... I ran the Panda software as instructed in Explorer, twice ... and both times after it finished and detected 38 instances of spyware and 2 instances of hacking tools, I got an error message that said:

"Application Error: The instruction at "0x7c9105ab" referenced memory at "0x0041ca1b." The memory could not be written."

Then the Explorer program closed.

And to answer your Kapersky question, I ran it in Explorer ... it would not run in my default browser, Mozilla Firefox.

"Application Error: The instruction at "0x7c9105ab" referenced memory at "0x0041ca1b." The memory could not be written."

Not find any information on this error. Might be you were low on memory by having to many applications open.
I'll do some more searching and asking the staff here. Be back as soon as I can.

Try updating your Norton AV database and run a scan. If it gives you a log post it here.

Hi ccinmfd,

Glad to hear you were able to get a scan. We have a bit of tidying up to do and your all done.

You may want to visit http://www.pcpitstop.com/ they may be able to help with your memory issues, unless your just low on memory.

Empty the Norton Anti Virus Quarantined files
====================

Now, enable the Show Hidden Folders option, like this:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
====================

Go to Start>Run and type in cmd
Then at the command prompt type this:

regsvr32 -u Deskadx.dll <--now hit enter

Now type: exit
====================

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking. Explore navigate to and find the following files: if found, delete the following files (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\DeskAdX.dll
For this one file if you can not delete it, right click on it and see if the check box for read-only is checked. If so, uncheck it and try to delete
====================
You can Uninstall or delete the following tools or files.

SmitfraudFix.zip from your desktop
SmitfraudFix folder
rapport.txt

These were problem specific and were not intended for everyday use.

Optional removals are:
Kapersky and Panda Active Scan from add/remove programs. They will locate but not delete files.
HighJackThis, this will need to be installed if you ever have problems and seek help in this or other forums.
Ewido, this is a great scanner and will work in conjunction with some other I have listed below. As with all scanners be sure to update the database prior to scanning.

Empty the recycle bin.

Hide System Files
1. Click Start.
2. Open My Computer .
3. SelectTools menu
4. Click Folder Options.
5. Select the View Tab.
6. Uncheck Show hidden files and foldersin the Hidden files and folders section.
7. Select Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
8. Check the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
9. Click Yes.
10. Click OK.

I want to give you a fresh start and so I need to clear and reset your system restore and the instructions for cleaning that are below. This will clean the last bit that Kapersky found.
Do this only once.
:[list=a]
[*]Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please take a minute and complain against those who gave you smitfraud. You can file this complaint at malwarecomplaints.info or click on the Malware Complaints icon in my signature.

Now you are “ALL CLEANâ€

update ...

Unread postby ccinmfd » June 1st, 2006, 9:47 am

... well, from the beginning ....

1. I couldn't find any Norton quarantined files to erase ... in fact, I couldn't find that program at all on my computer ... the Norton folder was empty ...

2. I went to Start>Run, etc ... typed in the command ... got the black DOS-type window open and typed in the command prompt ... and nothing ... I tried several variations of the command prompt -- is there a space after 32 and before -u? ... is there a space after -u and before Deskadx.dll? ... in any event, this did not work and all I received was a message that the file could not be found ... and there was no file found at C:/WINDOWS/Downloaded Program Files/DeskAdX.dll ...

3. OK deleting Smitfraud, etc ... from desktop

4. I removed Kapersky OK ...

5. I was OK hiding system files

6. I was unsure what :[list=a} meant just before you wrote Turn off System Restore ... but I followed the directions from there ...

... I restarted and turned back on the system restore ...

... but since I was unable to do the first task, I really question whether I accomplished what you set me out to do ... ccinmfd

Hi ccinmfd,

I couldn't find any Norton quarantined files to erase ... in fact, I couldn't find that program at all on my computer ... the Norton folder was empty ...

What Antivirus application are you using then?
You can empty them by foloowng the instructions at http://www.antivirus.vt.edu/help/quarantine.asp
or you can browse to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine and empty the contents of the folder. DO not delete the folder.

and there was no file found at C:/WINDOWS/Downloaded Program Files/DeskAdX.dll ...

OK if you had the hiden files revealed then I'm not sure where it went.
You could try this also just to make sure..
Click Start | Search | For Files and Folders.
Expand Search Options, check Advanced Options, check Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search Subfolders.
Paste these files below into the Search for files and folders named box:

C:/WINDOWS/Downloaded Program Files/DeskAdX.dll

If any of these files are found please delete them.

I was unsure what :[list=a} meant just before you wrote Turn off System Restore

:[list=a} is a Rogue mistake :oops: It's BBCode. I'll fix that.

but since I was unable to do the first task, I really question whether I accomplished what you set me out to do

You have done very well. Just do the search steps and if it's gone... :blob: :happy6:
