lostresourcefinder.com - what is this? how do i remove it?

Unread postby Grrrrr » May 21st, 2006, 1:15 pm

Hi people! Hope you can help! Recently when a webpage I am trying to access doesn't load for one reason or another I am automatically redirected to a site called "lostresourcefinder.com" which as far as I can tell is an advertising site. I don't want it whatever it is! I have all the usual anti-spyware stuff including spywareblaster and spyware guard (unfortunately installed after this redirection started happening) as well as spybot search and destroy, lavasoft adaware, and whatever my broadband provider BT Yahoo provides. Nothing I've tried so far picks this up, let alone removes it. Can someone tell me what it is and how I remove it please???? It's driving me mad! I'm not that hot on the technical side of computing, so the simplest way the better please... And thanx in advance for reading this and any help you can give!!!! :(

Hi there, and welcome to the forums!
  • Please print a copy of these instructions, or save them to Notepad, so you have them readily at hand for offline use.
  • You are running HijackThis directly from the Desktop and it needs to be in a folder. Please create a new folder on the Desktop and name it HijackThis, HJT, or something similar, then move the program into the new folder. Do this before you do anything else!
  • Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:

    Windows Temp
    Current User Temp
    All Users Temp
    Temporary Internet Files
    Prefetch
    Java Cache

The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All".

Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

If you use the Firefox or Opera browsers, you can use this program as a quick way to tidy those up as well.

    Firefox :
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    Opera :
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

When you have finished, click on the Exit button in the Main menu.
  • Please download ewido anti-malware
    • Install ewido anti-malware
    • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu."
    • Launch ewido, there should be a big "E" icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    • The program will prompt you to update click the "OK" button
    • The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
    • Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, exit ewido.
  • Please set your system to show
all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.
  • Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.

Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

    spdi_kill404.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished.
  • Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... _side.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... yahoo.com/

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... yahoo.com/
    O2 - BHO: SuperProxy-KILL404 Plugin - {C585E13E-164D-4A34-BAB3-29AC6221885C} - C:\WINDOWS\SuperProxyIE-KILL404.dll

    O16 - DPF: {15589FA1-C456-11CE-BF01-000000000000} - http://www.errornuker.com/products/errn ... taller.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
  • Reboot into safe mode, this way:
    Restart the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.
  • Using Windows Explorer, "Start" > "Explore," locate the following files and delete them:

    C:\WINDOWS\spdi_kill404.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\SuperProxyIE-KILL404.dll

    Exit Explorer.
  • Next, scan with ewido
    • Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!
    • Click on scanner
    • Click on Settings
      • Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
      • Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
      • Under "What to scan" select scan every file
      • Click OK
    • Click on Complete system scan
    • Let the program scan the machine
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. NOTE: We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, AOL, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged. In particular, watch for alerts that have the word "Heuristic" in them - if you recognize the file name as "friendly," these may actually be false positives) select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections." If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop

Reboot into normal mode.

Post back with the ewido log and a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Response to your advice!

Unread postby Grrrrr » May 22nd, 2006, 1:44 pm

Hi there! Before going on, can I just say that I really appreciate all your help - this sort of site restores my faith in human nature! Anyway, the ewido scan was as follows:

ewido anti-malware - Scan report
---------------------------------------------------------

+ Created on: 18:37:13, 22/05/2006
+ Report-Checksum: EB4E5752

+ Scan result:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\btmailcontrol.dll -> Dialer.BT.g : Ignored
::Report End

I didn't clean the file because I wasn't sure if this was spyware or not - the problem being that my broadband provider is BT, and my phone line is BT, and I run both BTYahoo's own browser and Internet Explorer 7, though not both at the same time, so I was worried it might be something to do with that. So I shall await your advice! The HijackThis new logfile is as follows:

Hello! :)

We're happy to be able to help. Yes, surfing dodgy sites is indeed the cause of much computer heartache. :D

You are correct... this entry is indeed associated with your broadband provider and should not be removed. :)
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\btmailcontrol.dll -> Dialer.BT.g : Ignored

Your log looks good now, and you should no longer be having problems with being redirected to the wrong site. This is a good time to clear out your system restore points and allow the system to set a fresh one...
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • Right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
  • Turn ON System Restore.

    • Right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Un-Check *Turn off System Restore.*
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • The system should have automatically created a fresh restore point. If it did not, you can set a new system restore point yourself.

Re-hide System Files
1. Click Start.
2. Open My Computer.
3. SelectTools menu
4. Click Folder Options.
5. Select the View Tab.
6. Uncheck Show hidden files and foldersin the Hidden files and folders section.
7. Select Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
8. Check the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
9. Click Yes.
10. Click OK.

A few recommendations...

  • Keep your virus definitions up to date - It is imperative that your antivirus program is kept updated with the latest virus definitions, preferably on a daily basis. If your antivirus program updates its definitions automatically, that's the best method. If it does not, then you will need to manually update. If your virus definitions are not up to date, then your antivirus will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I cannot stress enough how important it is that you use an active firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Although Windows XP has it's own firewall, it only protects against incoming threats, not outgoing. It's important to protect against both.

I would recommend either ZoneAlarm© or Sunbelt Kerio©
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates. Then make sure that your system is set for automatic updates.
  • Read Tony Klein's article So how did I get infected in the first place? for valuable tips on how to keep your system clean in the future.
