Hi pac73 ,

Welcome to Malware Removal Forums.

Trojanhunter says its found a suspicious file=c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\sys\TAR.EXE.(Suspicious UPX packed file in windows system folder.)

I belive this is a false positive from Trojan Hunter. There is a trojan that can be found in c:\windows\system32\cab\copy\tar.exe but lets have that file checked anway.
Has eTrust EZ Antivirus or WinPatrol picked up anything?
====================

Please do the following:

Submit File to Jotti
Please click on Jotti <http://virusscan.jotti.org/>
Use the "Browse" button and locate the following file on your computer:

c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\sys\TAR.EXE

Click the "Submit" button.
Please copy and post (reply) with the results

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html
====================

Start HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked
=====================

Please post the following:
Jotti results
New HJT Log

Thanks,
Rogue

MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is suspicious. Normally programs aren't packed and don't force the sandbox into lengthy emulation. Do realize no scanner issued any warning, the file can very well be harmless. Caution is advised, however.) Disclaimer
This service is by no means 100% safe. If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, We cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service.

Also, we are aware of the implications of a setup like this. We are sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). We are aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. We do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail us about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita.

Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware.

Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 15Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample.

Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception. Read more about this in our privacy policy. If you do not want your files to be distributed, please do not send them at all.

Hi pac73,

Well Jotti ddin't find anything bad and tar.exe is not associated with Ardamax as indicated.
tar.exe is found in a few applications but not in that location.
I know Trojan Hunter used to have problems with some files packed with a modified upx, or those that are crypted/protected.
Have you recently installed a program and Trojan Hunter is picking it up?
If not try renaming the file and see if any applications have problems. If not you can delete it.
Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

Rogue

Perfect. How is you system behaving?
In a previous post I asked if eTrust EZ Antivirus had picked anything up. I notice you have ewido installed also.
Can you update your ewido and eTrust EZ Antivirus and run a scan?
Both should have a log of what is found. Ewido will be report.txt from your desktop.
Can you post those along with a new HJT log please.

Thanks,
Rogue
