Hi guys,

I did a McAfee VirusScan earlier today and the file C:\windows\system\smss.exe was found to be infected by New Malware.u trojan. McAfee was unable to "clean" the trojan from smss.exe.

I did some research on the web and came across a site http://www.liutilities.com/products/win ... rary/smss/

The site states that smss.exe can either be a virus or a legitimate Windows process, but the only way to determine this (according to the site) is to buy their software for $50.00.

I used McAfee to quarantine smss.exe....I did not delete it. Please advise me on what I should do and if this trojan can be removed.

Hi

Before I can help you, I need a HJT log. Here are instructions for HJT:

Use this link to get HijackThis.
Save it to your desktop and then double-click to run it.
It will install the program in c:\program files\HijackThis.
Browse to that location with windows explorer, and double click on the HijackThis.exe program to run. Chose the 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'
That will allow you to save the log to the desktop (or some other place) and leave open a notepad file with the HijackThis log in it. Right-click anywhere in the notepad and select "select all". Right-click again and select "copy". In your next reply to this thread, please paste the contents of the HJT log by right-clicking and selecting "paste" in the textfield of your reply. :)

Hi again. It appears you have been infected with some malware. To get rid of it, do the following.

Download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop.

Next, open HJT. With all browser windows closed, select the following line:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [.nvsvc] C:\WINDOWS\system\smss.exe /w
O23 - Service: Windows Log - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvcd.exe

Press "Fix".

Close HJT.
--------------------------------

Next, open HJT again. Select "Open The Misc Tools Section" and then "Delete an NT Service". Paste the following in the text field that comes up:

Windows Log

Press OK

--------------------------------

Next, double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

Select "Delete on Reboot".
Place the following line (complete path) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvcd.exe
C:\windows\system\smss.exe

Put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot"
Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Rescan with HJT and post a fresh HJT log. :)

Question

Unread postby wsadaphal80 » May 19th, 2006, 1:24 pm

Hi titan9,

Thanks for the info. One question though....should I remove the smss.exe from McAfee's "quarantine" and restore it to its original location before I take the steps you had outlined? Take care, Warren

Hi again, Warren.

By the looks of the HJT log, there is still smss.exe in C:\Windows\System(for reference, the location of a valid smss.exe is in C:\Windows\System32), so following the instructions I gave should work. I wouldn't restore it from Quarantine as that could only make matters worse. If the instructions that I gave don't work, just reply back here saying so and we'll take a different approach to fixing the problem.

I forgot to post that last night McAfee found another file infected with the New Malware.u trojan. This was detected BEFORE I performed the steps you outlined. The name of the file is: A0012957.EXE and it is located in: c:\system volume information\_restore{46DE8921-1D39-44D2-A9E9-64119261F211}\RP159\

I quarantined this file. Sorry for only now bringing this up but it was only detected after you had sent the steps for the smss.exe file. Once again, any help will be greatly appreciated. Take care, Warren

Hi again, Warren.

That file found by McAfee, located in System Restore, is basically just a back-up of the original, not another infection. Quarantine, as you said, has already taken care of that so it shouldn't be anything to worry about. System Restore, as you probably know, creates back-up check-points of your system so that if something infects your PC, you can revert back to a (hopefully) healthy System Restore point. As long as we flush System Restore after getting rid of all the malware on your PC, there'll be no more such back-ups of malware on the PC. For more on System Restore, click here.

I am currently looking over your new log and will post back shortly with my analysis and any potential fixes that need to be run. :)

Congratulations! I have gone over your log and it appears that you are now free of malware. Before you celebrate too much, please be advised that it is easy to get re-infected without adequate protection. The programs below, when downloaded and updated regularly, will help you stay clean. First, though, we must disable and re-enable System Restore to flush your System of any malware remaining.

1. Disable system restore to get rid of any malware hiding out there.

To disable system restore do the following:
Click the Start button.
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
On the System Restore tab, check Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives.
Click Apply.
This deletes all existing restore points. Click Yes to do this.
Click OK.
Restart the computer and follow the instructions in the next section to turn on System Restore.

Re-enable System Restore.

After rebooting, re-enable system restore by doing the following:
Click the Start button.
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
On the System Restore tab, uncheck Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

----------------------------------

2.Download some programs to help stay clean

Anti-Malware:(recommendation: download at least two of the following)

Spybot Search & Destroy - An excellent anti-spyware program that scans for spyware on your PC and removes it.
AdAware Personal - Also an excellent program for scanning and removal of malware on your PC.
SpywareBlaster - This neat program helps to prevent spyware from ever being installed on your PC.
SpywareGuard - Another neat program which helps to prevent spyware from being installed. This program is by the makers of SpywareBlaster and, combined with SpywareBlaster, these two are an excellent one-two combo for protection.

Misc:
ATFCleaner - This is an excellent Temporary Files cleaner. Cleaning out Temp files every once in a while is a good thing to do. Instead of manually cleaning out Temp folders, you can run ATFCleaner and let it do the job for you.

--------------------------------------------

3.Update Windows and Java, if needed. Be sure to check regularly for updates!!!

You can go here to update Windows. Updating Java can either be done manually by going here or by going to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Java on your PC. Under the "Update" tab, select "Update Now". Java will then update.

---------------------------------------------

4.Check regularly for updates for anti-virus programs, firewalls and anti-spyware programs.

Downloading and installing essential anti-malware programs isn't enough. You need to do regular scans with anti-virus and anti-spyware programs as well as check often for updates in order to help prevent malware from invading your PC again.

---------------------------------------------

5.Read Tony Klein's excellent article entitled "So How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?".

You can read it by going here.

---------------------------------------------

6.Stand up and be counted! Post your malware complaints by going here!
