bookedspace & pacimedia

Unread postby doulos » May 10th, 2006, 1:59 pm

I've been cleaning up a friend's laptop and haven't been able to extricate bookedspace and pacimedia which continue to appear on a Spybot scan.

Thank you for any assistance.

Hi doulos!

Print this out for reference during the fix as you won't be able to access the Net for part of it.

Download CCleaner. Install the program but don't run it yet.

Download Ewido Anti-Malware. Install the program without the Ewido Guard(its Real Time Protection) and update it. Don't scan with it yet.

Please disable TrojanHunter Guard as it may interfere with the fix. To disable TrojanHunter Guard:
  • Right click the System Tray icon and select Settings.
  • Uncheck "Load at startup".
  • Uncheck "Enabled".

Once your log is clean you can re-enable TrojanHunterGuard.

Run and scan with HijackThis. With all browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and fix:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [3s9W33W] aclcert6.exe

Boot into Safe Mode. To do this:

1. Reboot your computer.
2. Tap the F8 button as your computer is booting to bring you to the Advanced Options Menu.
3. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Click Start>Search. Click All Files and Folders. Click More Advanced Options. Make sure there are checks beside Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders. In the All or part of the filename text field type in the following:

aclcert6.exe

And click the Search button.

When the file is found... delete it.

Run CCleaner to clean up all the junk/temp files.

Run Ewido through a full scan and save the logfile to your Desktop.

Reboot windows normally and post a new HJT log along with the Ewido log.

Thanks!

Thanks for posting the logs.

Want to run another tool as the Ewido scan picked up an infection that at times will use a rootkit.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here.

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to your Desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and double click RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

I haven't noticed anymore pop-ups, etc. Thank you so much. I'll be finishing up my friend's laptop today with gratitude to you!

Good to hear! Glad I was able to help :)

Some suggestions...

Now that your computer is clean, its a good time to reset your System Restore point. This will ensure a clean backup to fall upon if you ever need it. To do this:
  • Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"

Reboot your computer, follow the steps above, this time unchecking the "Turn off System Restore" and reboot.

I recommend downloading and installing SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE-SPYAD as well. The programs are free and can be updated... so please do so. Installing these will go a long way in preventing reinfection.

Check out these links How'd I get Infected and Understanding Spyware as well, some good information for you.

Other than that, remember to update Windows frequently, update your protection programs, scan often and...

Surf Safe!
