I don’t quite know where to begin. I run win2k, use TrendMicro antivirus, and also have AVG7 installed. I had (up until 10 mins ago) Sygate firewall running. I cannot get ANY internet access while Sygate is running. I have never used a firewall up until today. I also do not have a router.

Over the past few days, my internet has gone nuts. It is being accessed despite me not being connected. I continually keep getting the following files infected: msgfix.exe, explore.exe, and tskmgr.exe. The most common virus is sdbot102.e

I posted on the bullguard forums, but it just seems like I am either not doing the suggested removal tasks properly, or I have problems that noone knows how to fix....thus Trigger send me here to your forum to ask for help.

I have rebooted probably 50 times trying to do any and everything people have suggested (and in doing so probably made things worse)

I have updated and ran Spybot, Ad-aware, Spyblaster, and mwav.doc. I have tried to delete certain recurring files in regedit, but to no avail.

Sometimes I will have no internet access for hours, and all of a sudden I do, but along comes a bunch of viruses. Often when trying to connect it just says "detecting proxy settings" and never connects.

I have also done numerous HJT logs and always get mobsync.exe/logon, and Wireconnect.exe that come back (I was told this is bad).

I have also ran several online antivirus scanner: panda, rav, housecall, ect...I delete whatever comes up, but yet I keep getting more nasties coming back. I am at a total loss.

Security Task Manager shows that msgfix.exe is running twice.

I am willing to start all over with doing scans, reboots, safe mode, more scans ect, if someone is able to help me detect what entity has taken over my system and make suggestions on what to do next. I know very little about computers and need very elementary step by step instuctions if/when deleting files. You seem to be the man that can hopefully help me.

Here is my latest HJT log (not safemode):

Any thoughts, ideas, or even where to start in helping to make my system work (first of all) and secondly more efficient?

OK

Please confirm what type of connection you have to the internet.

DSL - Via router
DSL - Modem
Cable - Modem
Dialup - Modem
Wireless network - with router or modem.

Can you provide a link to the topic where you were being helped before.

Ok, I have a cable modem
here is the url for the link that I previously posted at:

http://www.bullguard.com/forum/9/Can-an ... _9089.html

I just did a scan with spybot and adaware with instructions from this post:
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showtopic=29036

and deleted the stuff it found, rebooted and ran security task manager and found that certain files are running at a high % (msgfix.exe, svhost.exe, and WireConnect.exe)

here is the latest HJT log as well:

Hi there,

Please set your system to show all files; see here for how to do this if you're unsure.

Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.
Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

C:\WINNT\system32\msgfix.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\msgfix.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished

Close all programs down, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Wireless Conections] WireConnect.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win32 Loader] svhost.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Wireless Conections] WireConnect.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Win32 Loader] svhost.exe

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you don't know how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\WINNT\system32\msgfix.exe
WireConnect.exe
svhost.exe

You will need to find these files - they are probably in the c:\winnt or c:\winnt/system32 folders. - DO be careful that the name of the file is exact - they use similar filenames to legit files on purpose.

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we'll take another look.

Well, here are the details....

I enabled system to show all files, went into task manager and did not see any msgfix.exe files running. I did however see 4 svchost.exe files running (all at different values). went back into HJT and did not see any of those 4 files listed.

Here is the problem, I rebooted in safe mode, and could NOT locate
C:\WINNT\system32\msgfix.exe
WireConnect.exe
svhost.exe

When I went into safe mode I disconnected from my modem (not sure if it matters or not). I have now rebooted, hooked back up to the internet and the following is the latest HJT log:

When searching for those files, I went into system, system 32 and did not see any of them. All I saw that was even close was svchost.exe, which I left.

Is it normal for svchost.exe to be running 4 times in task manager?

Any thoughts what to scan or run next. I just ran security task manager 1.6c and this is the first time that wireconnect, msgfix and svhost were not found to be running. Not sure if that means they may be gone or not.

Yes it is normal - svchost.exe is a M$ program that is used to run other services.

Well now they are not in your log - that would mean that you do not have a LIVE infection any more - BUT they still exist on your computer, and so a simple click on the file in windows explorer could activate it (them) again.

I suggest you run one or two online AV scans to double check your installed AV.

BTW two AV's runnign together is not a good idea - I would disable one of them trend or avg7. Keep which ever you have a licence for the updates - (I know that the AVG7 is thew free one.)

For the online AV scans look in my Public Library for 'computer safety online' article - and the AV post in that. It has a fair selection for you to choose from.

Post back with a fresh HJT log after doing that.

well here's the latest. My msgfix.exe came back. It seemed to reappear as soon as I tried to do a scan with spybot. Up until that point, my internet connection seemed somewhat normal (ie the connection lights were no longer indicating outgoing and incomming traffic). I rebooted in safe mode and WAS able to find the msgfix.exe file this time. I deleted it, then rebooted. I will uninstall the AVG7 since I have Trend. I will also uninstall spybot.

Can I reinstall sygate firewall, or do u recommend a different one. I will run a few scans, post back, and post another HJT.

Thx for your help thus far, I hope things are getting better.........

yup, msgfix.exe, wire connect.exe, and svhost.exe all came back. I cannot access internet while using sygate. I disabled it and installed zone alarm. While installing it, and reading through, the computer just suddenly rebooted itself. Oh great more problems. For whatever reason, after rebooting I seem to have zone alarm working now.

It has been working for about 5 minutes now, under the "overview" section it says that it has blocked 195 access attempts listed under "inbound protection"....oh now its up to 202 and rising. Is this normal....I wud probably say not. 215 now.

Is that how many remote attempts are trying to get into my computer?

225 now....hehe this is kinda fun...not.

Well your machine is clean - if those firewall attempts are incoming that means they are coming from outside your computer - not from inside trying to get out.

I would tell zonealarm to block those silently - so you do not see what is going on.

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  4. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

May your God go with you..
