I hope this is the right place to post this. Anyhow the computer is very slow. My son is complaining about it all the time. I keep telling his it is just getting old. I decided to see if you could help me. Maybe there is something I can do to speed it up.

Register to Remove

Unread postby Kimberly » April 5th, 2006, 1:43 pm

Hello dearlymom and welcome,

There are a few items to fix. You have also Wildtangent installed on the computer. We can remove it but it will break all the online games and the first time you'll play a game it will be reinstalled.

Maybe there isn't anything else to fix, we'll do a scan since HijackThis doesn't show everything. We could take out a few programs from boot in order to try to speed up the PC. Do you have an idea on the CPU & amount of memory installed on the PC ? They could be the cause of it since you did mention that the PC is getting old. You can check it out by doing Start > Right Click My computer. You will see the specs of the PC listed under Computer.

Click on Start, Control Panel, click on Add/Remove Programs
Look through the installed programs for the following items and remove them if present:

Absolute Poker

During the uninstall process, you might be presented with several prompts to guide you through uninstalling the product. Read these carefully to make sure you are actually choosing to uninstall rather than keep the software.
______________________________

Run HijackThis, click on None of the above, just start the program, click on Scan. Put a check in the box on the left side of the following items if still present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O9 - Extra button: AbsolutePoker NET - {5E72AD5A-20DF-4ca4-9B7B-D9717FFDE0C5} - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINXP\Start Menu\Programs\AbsolutePoker NET\AbsolutePoker NET.lnk (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: AbsolutePoker NET - {5E72AD5A-20DF-4ca4-9B7B-D9717FFDE0C5} - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINXP\Start Menu\Programs\AbsolutePoker NET\AbsolutePoker NET.lnk (file missing)

Hello dearlymom,

You may leave Wildtangent if you wish, below is a description of what it does.

What is Wild Tangent?

Wild Tangent is a video game software company specializing in online games. It has even made a partnership with AOL to include itself as part of the AOL Instant Messenger for their AIM games section. The WildTangent Web Driver is their technology that allows you to play 3D games over the Internet. Although its not technically considered spyware it does have built in components to update itself and gather information about the computer system including
  • Operating System Version
  • CPU Type and Speed
  • Memory Amount
  • Video Card type and Driver Version
  • Sound Card type and Driver Version
  • DirectX Version
  • Location that the Web Driver was installed from
Note that Wild Tanget's privacy policy states they also collect and share individuals information.

Hello Kim

Thanks for all your help so far. I hope the Startup list is complete this time.

I have not done anything with the optional items yet. How do I know if I or someone else in my family uses some of those items or not?

I think things are a little faster, but it is hard to tell. Is McAfee completely off this comuter?

Thanks

Kim

Hello dearlymom,

The startuplist is complete, thanks for posting it again. McAfee is completely gone from the PC, at least I don't see traces of it anymore in the Services or Startup items except for one small entry which ain't active. Regfix to remove it is below. I don't see any malware anymore in your logs. It is possible that the PC runs a bit faster, you had some bad files running on it. They always use a lot of ressources unfortunately. One can feel the difference, even after a small cleanup.

For the optional itams : You may fix the two below without hesitating.

Run HijackThis, click on None of the above, just start the program, click on Scan. Put a check in the box on the left side of the following items if still present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click Fix Checked

For the other items, may I suggest you print out the list and discuss about it with the other users of the computer. That might be the best solution. Maybe of those items are rarely used and most of them can be accessed through the control panel. If you modify your graphic settings every day for example, then it's convenient to have them handy in the tray.

Most of those items can be temporarly disabled using msconfig. Windows does back up the keys in case you want to restore them later on (if you notice that their are needed or usefull for example). You can reach msconfig as follows : Start > Run > type msconfig in the edit box and hit ok. Uncheck the items you don't want to load anymore on the startup tab. Their description matches the ones listed in HijackThis.

Small fix to remove the McAfee orphan key :

Copy/paste the following text into a new Notepad document. Make sure that you have one blank line at the end of the document as shown in the quoted text.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"MISAggregator"=-

Save it to your desktop as Fixme.reg. Save it as :
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: Fixme.reg

Locate Fixme.reg on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the merged successfully prompt.

I did notice 3 scheduled tasks, do you know them ? Did you create those tasks ? If not, I would like to see which files are executed by those jobs. Don't worry, you don't have lop installed on the pc, but the tool is handy to list info about scheduled tasks. If you know those jobs, skip this step.

Download Findlop to your Desktop
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/findlop.zip

Create a folder for Findlop on the C: drive called C:\lop. You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it lop. Extract all the files from the zip archive into that folder.

Open the lop folder and doubleclick findlop.bat and it will create the file C:\findlop.txt
Copy the content into your next post.

Kim

My son did the HiJack This stuff that you mentioned in the last post. The only one he did not do was the pctspk.exe file. I thought the igfxtray was going to gett rid of the tool bar at the bottom of the screen.

Here is the next list you wanted. Thanks for telling me the short cut for hi-liting the txt. It sure beats hiliting it with the mouse and scrolling down.

Thanks

Kim

Hello dearlymom,

My son did the HiJack This stuff that you mentioned in the last post. The only one he did not do was the pctspk.exe file. I thought the igfxtray was going to gett rid of the tool bar at the bottom of the screen.
That's great to hear. Hopefully the PC will have a little bit more free ressources now and things might be a bit faster. igfxtray is only a fast access to the display properties of the graphics card, it does not take away the taskbar.

No problem with the scheduled tasks, they are legit (used to sync folders or network ressources)

Just a small task to perform :

Please reset System Restore to remove eventual backups of the spyware and trojans.

Turn off System Restore
  1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the System Restore tab.
  3. Select the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
  4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.
Reboot your computer.

Turn System Restore back on
  1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the System Restore tab.
  3. Clear the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
A new restore point will be created automatically.
______________________________

Hide your system files again.
  1. Click Start.
  2. Click My Computer.
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. Select the View Tab.
  5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading uncheck Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  7. Click Yes to confirm.
  8. Click OK.
______________________________

Since the PC hasn't a lot of memory, XP will use a lot the virtual pagefile thus your HDD may be defragmented. It would be a good idea to defrag it. Follow the instructions below to perform this. Note, this operation may take some time and it is advised to do nothing else when you optimize the HDD.

Click Start > Run > type in CMD and hit enter. In the CMD window, type chkdsk /f and hit enter. If you are using the NTFS system, you'll get a message that the volume is locked. It will ask you to run at next boot, anwser yes and close the CMD window. Reboot your computer and wait untill you see the desktop again. (It will reboot automatically just after the check)

When done, click on My Computer, select Local Disk (C), Right click to bring up the menu and click on Properties and go to Tools tab. Click on Defragment now and click on the Defragment button in the next window. This may take some time. Relax and have a cup of coffee or tea. A regular use of this command will speed up things a bit too. (Once a week or so)
______________________________

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Windows, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office Updates

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site frequently. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any application of it, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed.

If you have trouble with Windows Update, you still can get all the Critical Updates, Security Fixes and Service Packs. Below are a few links to bookmark.

Keep your Sun Java up to date

To check if you have the latest version installed and get the needed updates, please go to the link below:
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp
You'll need to use IE and allow ActiveX for this update. Follow the instructions on that page to check your Java Software.

Or you can get the manual download here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Check in your Control Panel, under Add/Remove programs and uninstall ALL older versions of Sun Java. And in the future, remember to remove older versions of Java when you automatically update to a newer version to avoid exploitation of older versions left on your system.

Use an AntiVirus Software

It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See the link below for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs.
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus

Update your Anti Virus Software

It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall

I can not stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below.

Finally, after following up on all these recommendations, why not run Jason Levine's Browser Security Tests ?
They will provide you with an insight on how vulnerable you might still be to a number of common exploits.
