Hi tonyq and welcome to the forums,

Your HijackThis log just shows a few orphan entries but nothing else.

Run HijackThis, click on None of the above, just start the program, click on Scan. Put a check in the box on the left side of the following items if still present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {8B68564D-53FD-4293-B80C-993A9F3988EE} - (no file)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click Fix Checked
______________________________

Let's double check with an online scan since HijackThis does not show everything.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Can I see a startuplist too please.

Run HijackThis, click on Open the Misc Tools Section, put a checkmark in List also minor sections and List empty sections. Click on Generate StartupList log, anwser Yes and copy/paste the content in your reply.
Click Back and Click on Scan. When the scan is finished, click Save Log and paste the content in your reply.

question :

O23 - Service: Service de lancement de WlanCfg (Wlancfg) - Inventel - C:\Program Files\Inventel\Gateway\wlancfg.exe

Are you using Wanadoo's Livebox ? Wireless connection ?

Something else to consider. Depending on how much ram you have & on your CPU, Norton may slow down your computer. You can check that out by doing Start > right click My Computer > look under computer on the General Tab.

With Norton firewall installed, the bootsequence may take longer (up to 1 minute) before you can start to use the desktop. Shutdown is also affected. Depending on your needs and depending on which services you need, this can be solved by disabling the workstation service. That's also one of the reasons why I would like to see a startuplist.

Please post:

  1. Kaspersky results
  2. HijackThis startuplist
  3. new HijackThis log

Hello tonyq,

Thanks for the information. We need to clean up a trojan and I would like to see which other files are in that folder.

I forgot to mention before, that sometimes the computer crashes, completly shutting down. I dont know if the two are relative to each other or not.
I am using Wanadoos Livebox, Wireless Connection (USB)
The laptop as 256 ram. (may need to increase this ?)

A BSOD may be related to a conflict between drivers / hardware or a rootkit. Did it happen before ?
256 meg is a bit low indeed when you have Windows XP installed and several programs, services running. The fact that your laptop is running slow is affected by this. Norton can use much ressources and furthermore it seems to me that you did use Panda before ? I still see some leftovers of that and we will need to clean them up manually. Panda & Norton don't go well along together which might contribute to the slow boot.

Make sure that you can see hidden files.
  1. Click Start.
  2. Click My Computer.
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. Select the View Tab.
  5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  7. Click Yes to confirm.
  8. Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  9. Click OK.
______________________________

Using Windows Explorer, Search and Delete these Files if listed:

C:\Program Files\Software Trust Flap\28917.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file, right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is uncheck it and try again.

If you have trouble deleting the file (error message that the file is in use for example), boot into Safe Mode as shown below and delete the file.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Delete the file and boot into Normal Mode.
______________________________

Copy/paste the following quote box into a new notepad (not wordpad) document.

@ECHO OFF
cd C:\Program Files\Software Trust Flap
dir *.* /s > c:\myfiles.txt
notepad c:\myfiles.txt
del /q C:\myfiles.txt

Save it to your Desktop as findfile.bat. Save it as:
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: findfile.bat

Locate findfile.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. When notepad opens, copy/paste the content in your reply. When you close Notepad the CMD window will close and c:\myfiles.txt will be deleted.
______________________________

Since you did mention the crashes, I would like to know if you have a rootkit installed or not.

Download Blacklight Beta from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
  • Hit I accept. It will take you to download page.
  • Download blbeta.exe and save it to the Desktop.
  • Once saved... move blbeta.exe to C:\ - Local Disk (C)
You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C:.
Locate blbeta.exe and right click on it, select cut, right click an empty space in the folder you just did open and select paste.
  • Click Start, then Run and paste the following in the edit box : C:\blbeta.exe /expert and hit Enter (or click Ok)
  • Click accept agreement and Click scan
This app too may fire off a warning from antivirus. Let the driver load.
    Wait for it to finish.
  • If it displays any items...don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close)
  • It will drop a log on the Desktop or in the C:\ folder that starts with fsbl....big number
    Please post contents of log.
______________________________

Please post
  1. c:\myfiles.txt
  2. blacklight log
  3. was Panda installed ?

Hi Kim,
I hope this is the info that you needed, when I say the computer crashes,I mean it completly shuts down, it as only started doing this lately. To my knowledge "Panda Anti Virus" as never been loaded on the computer, but having done a search (after completing your instructions) on my comp it came up with the following:"Panda.txt"when opened it says:

"The software for Panda Anti-Virus is not compatible with this version of Microsoft Windows and will be disabled during the upgrade.

For more information about this software, or to obtain a version that runs on this version of Microsoft Windows, visit the manufacturer's Web site.

For a list of software supported by this version of Microsoft Windows, see the Microsoft Windows XP Compatibility List at http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dl ... compatible.

Hello tonyq,

I see that some panda stuff got through so let's try to remove it from the computer. Is you laptop cooled down as it should be ? Sometimes an overheating problem can provoke a shutdown.

Using Windows Explorer, Search and Delete this Folder if listed:

C:\Program Files\Software Trust Flap
______________________________

Download Bobbi Flekman's RegSearch from
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/regsearch.php

Create a folder for RegSearch on the C: drive called C:\RegSearch. You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it RegSearch. Extract all the files from the zip archive into that folder.

Open the RegSearch folder and double-click the icon for RegSearch.exe to launch the program.
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box:

pav
on the next line enter panda

then hit Ok

After completion Notepad will be opened with all the found instances of the string. The resulting file is saved in the same location as RegSearch.exe.
______________________________

If you have trouble with the above tool, use this one instead :
Please download the Registry Search Tool from here:
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/

Unzip it to a convienant location such as your Desktop. Make sure that your Antivirus / OS allows the use of the .vbs scripts. If prompted, make sure to allow the script.

Double click regsearch.vbs
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box:

pav

then hit Ok

It may take a while to run. It will tell you when it's done and offer you to look at the file.
Say Yes and when it opens copy/paste the content in your reply.

Repeat with panda
______________________________

Let's see if we can find out why your PC shuts down. Use one of the following ways to get into the Event Viewer.

1. Start, Rightclick on My Computer and select Manage then Event Viewer.
2. Control Panel -> Adminstrative Tools -> Event Viewer

Click on System in the left pane, look for Event 1001/1003, it should show info about the stop error. Double click to open them up and copy them by pressing the bottom of the three buttons (the one with the copy icon). Then Edit Paste it to a reply. Normally that should help to find the reason of the BSOD.

Hello tonyq,

Thanks for the regsearch. I'll go over it.

May I see the Kaspersky log please ? It might be a new LOP variant. Did you ever had Messenger Plus! installed ?

Also, let's run Ewido - it might be able to spot something else. Getting your computer clean is a priority.

Please download the trial version of Ewido anti-malware 3.5 from here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install Ewido anti-malware.
  • When installing, under Additional Options uncheck Install background guard and Install scan via context menu.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you could get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click Ok.
  • The program will prompt you to update. Click the Ok button.
  • The program will now go to the main screen.
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left-hand side of the main screen click the Update Button.
  • Click on Start.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once finished updating, close Ewido.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido manual updates. Make sure to close Ewido before installing the update.
______________________________

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Navigate to C:\Windows\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.
______________________________

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on Settings
    • Under How to scan all boxes should be checked
    • Under Unwanted Software all boxes should be checked
    • Under What to scan select Scan every file
    • Click on Ok
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says Perform action on all infections and put a checkmark in the box next to Create encrypted backup, then choose clean and click Ok.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save Report.
  • Click Save Report button
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Close Ewido and Reboot in Normal Mode.
______________________________

Please post
  1. Ewido log
  2. Kaspersky log
  3. A new HijackThis log
Your may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

Hello tonyq,

Firstly I don't think Messenger Plus as been insalled but not 100% sure.
If don't see traces of it and usually LOP creates scheduled tasks to update itself. I didn't see any lop tasks. It was the strange name of the folder that made me think of it and the name of the trojan.

The instance found by Kaspersky is in System Restore, let's remove it.

Please reset System Restore to remove eventual backups of the spyware and trojans.

Turn off System Restore
  1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the System Restore tab.
  3. Select the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
  4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.
Reboot your computer.

Turn System Restore back on
  1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the System Restore tab.
  3. Clear the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
A new restore point will be created automatically.
______________________________

Hide your system files again.
  1. Click Start.
  2. Click My Computer.
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. Select the View Tab.
  5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading uncheck Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  7. Click Yes to confirm.
  8. Click OK.
______________________________

I don't see anything else bad in your log, how's the computer running now ? The errors from the Event Viewer are normal errors, nothing shows serious problems or there isn't a message that can explain the shutdowns.

Did you check your RAM lately to see if you don't have any bad modules ?

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Windows, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office Updates

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site frequently. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any application of it, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed.

If you have trouble with Windows Update, you still can get all the Critical Updates, Security Fixes and Service Packs. Below are a few links to bookmark.

Keep your Sun Java up to date

The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 6

To check if you have the latest version installed and get the needed updates, please go to the link below:
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp
You'll need to use IE and allow ActiveX for this update. Follow the instructions on that page to check your Java Software.

Or you can get the manual download here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Check in your Control Panel, under Add/Remove programs and uninstall ALL older versions of Sun Java. And in the future, remember to remove older versions of Java when you automatically update to a newer version to avoid exploitation of older versions left on your system.

Download and install the following free programs
  • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    You can download SpywareBlaster here
A tutorial can be found here
  • SpywareGuard
It provides a degree of real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method. An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing, but for spyware. And you can easily have an anti-virus program running alongside SpywareGuard. It also features Download Protection and Browser Hijacking Protection.
    You can download SpywareGuard here
A tutorial can be found here
  • IE-SPYAD
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. It basically prevents any downloads, cookies, scripts from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    You can download IE-SPYAD here
A tutorial can be found here
  • Hosts File
A Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad, spyware sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
A tutorial tutorial can be found here
    • MVPS Hosts File
You can download the MVPS Hosts File here
Furthermore the website contains useful tips and links to other resources and utilities.
    • Bluetack's Hosts File and Hosts Manager
Essentially based on the research made by Webhelper, Andrew Clover and Eric L. Howes, it contains most if not all the known spyware sites, sites responsible for hijacks, rogue apllications etc...
      Download Bluetack's Hosts file here
      Download Bluetack's Hosts Manager here
Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs
  • Ad-Aware
It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks.
    You can download Ad-Aware here
A tutorial can be found here
  • Spybot - Search & Destroy
It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
You can download Spybot - S&D here
A tutorial can be found here
Before adding any other Spyware Detection and Removal programs always check the Rogue Anti-Spyware List for programs known to be misleading, mistaken, or just outright "Foistware".
You will find the list here

Ewido Security Suite

Realtime protection against these threats:
  • Hijackers and Spyware
Secure surfing in the Internet without fear of annoying changes of the start page of your browser, tracking cookies and advertising bars.
  • Worms
Nobody should receive e-mails in your name with malicious files in the appendix anymore.
  • Dialers
Security against all kinds of dialers. No fear when receiving the next phone bill.
  • Trojans and Keyloggers
No chance for thieves to steal your bank data and personal sensitive information by tapped Internet connections, remote controlled webcams or secret keyboard recordings.
Most of you will have already the trial version of this software, which is an excellent program and particularly good at catching trojans. If you find it useful you might want to consider buying the full program. When the trial period ends, the real-time protection and the automatic update feature will stop working. You still will be able to update the program manually.
You can download Ewido Security Suite here
Ewido manual updates. Make sure to close Ewido before installing the update.

WinPatrol

WinPatrol uses a heuristic approach to detecting attacks and violations of your computing environment. Traditional security programs scan your hard drive searching for previously identified threats. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You'll be removing dangerous new programs while others download new reference files.
  • Detect & Neutralize Spyware.
  • Detect & Neutralize ADware.
  • Detect & Neutralize Viral infections.
  • Detect & Neutralize Unwanted IE Add-Ons.
  • Detect & Restore File Type Changes.
  • Automatically Filter Unwanted Cookies.
  • Avoid Start Page Hijacking.
  • Detect changes to HOSTS & critical system files.
  • Kill Multiple Tasks that replicate each other, in a single step!
  • Stop programs that repeatedly add themselves to your Startup List!
Starting with WinPatrol 9.5 PLUS users also get the addition of Real-time Infiltration Detection so they'll know immediately when changes are made to critical system areas. WinPatrol Free is not demo or trial software. You're welcome to use it as long as you like.

Use an AntiVirus Software

It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See the link below for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs.
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=53#53

Update your Anti Virus Software

It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall

I can not stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below.

Finally, after following up on all these recommendations, why not run Jason Levine's Browser Security Tests ?
They will provide you with an insight on how vulnerable you might still be to a number of common exploits.

Happy surf and please let me know how the computer is behaving now.

Hi tonyq,

Since I don't know if you have a floppy on your laptop :

Bootable CD : http://www.memtest.org/download/1.65/me ... 65.iso.zip
Unzip and burn to CD - Reboot the PC from the CD

Floppy (you need to have a floppy support on your laptop)
http://www.memtest.org/download/1.65/me ... floppy.zip
Unzip, run and it will create a bootable floppy. Reboot the pc from the floppy.

Don't hesitate to post back if you need more information. :)

Hello tonyq,

To boot from a floppy or cd, just put the cd or floppy in the slot while the PC is still running. Shutdown your computer. Reboot, the pc should now boot from the cd or the floppy automatically.

If you are using a cd, you might see a message "press any key to boot from cd" - quickly press a key.

Normally on desktop PC's, booting from a floppy is the easiest way.

If your PC still boots under Windows XP, you might need to change the boot sequence in the BIOS.
