A Friend Needs Help

Unread postby rayzer » April 24th, 2005, 7:22 pm

Hi guy's, sorry I haven't been around for awhile, but I'm quite busy at present

Anyway... A friend of mine asked me to have a look at his system as he couldn't get onto IE, however he could use Firefox. Upon viewing the logfile, there are obvious signs of infection. I have already attempted two fixes to no avail and the same things re-appear or simply will not delete (google.exe for one). I've used various methods/tools and whats more strange, the log keeps changing all the time, new things appearing/others not showing when they should etc. Now after posting a new logfile, I have a strange 'R1' entry as well as the obvious infections that still exist in the log. I ask you as the experts to please clean this up once and for all.

Thanks.

Ray.

Hi rayzer!

If the computer has been rebooted since you posted the log file. Please post a new log file and do not reboot the computer until I instruct you to.

If not, maybe post a new log file anyways... if things are changing as much as you say, something might have changed since you posted the last log.

Thanks!

Thankyou Kotaguy.

**Note**

This is not the latest logfile, that will follow in the next post.

This was the first logfile, hardly any running processes and of course I asked him if he had restricted them at startup. He replied no. I gave a fix to this logfile, which resulted to the log in the first post. Note theres more running processes that have appeared, the strange 'R1' entry wasnt there and we have tried killbox to remove Google.exe to no avail. The '017' entry I asked him to remove and now we have two of them. We have successfully removed some though. :D

Oh yes, He did run Panda AND Housecall, and has scanned with Spybot AND Adaware.

First post in this thread = Logfile 2

Logfile 1 : (latest logfile to follow).

OK... first... the install of Messenger 3! Plus.... is it the clean version?

In the latest log... there is a file running from a Temp folder...

C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\~e5.0001

It also shows your google.exe entries...

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MsCom32Agent] C:\WINDOWS\System32\google.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*MsCom32Agent] C:\WINDOWS\System32\google.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsCom32Agent] C:\WINDOWS\System32\google.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [*MsCom32Agent] C:\WINDOWS\System32\google.exe

There are also these entries...

O9 - Extra button: Microsoft® JavaScript® Console - {4FC00431-9368-4010-9846-841597726AC5} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\comdlg32.ocx
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: JavaScript Console - {4FC00431-9368-4010-9846-841597726AC5} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\comdlg32.ocx
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft® JavaScript® Console - {4FC00431-9368-4010-9846-841597726AC5} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\comdlg32.ocx (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: JavaScript Console - {4FC00431-9368-4010-9846-841597726AC5} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\comdlg32.ocx (HKCU)

The file comdlg32.ocx is most likely valid. What is strange about the entry though is if you Google the CLSID {4FC00431-9368-4010-9846-841597726AC5}, nothing is returned... this is usually a bad thing. I'm thinking these are linked to google.exe.

I haven't come across this one before and I can't seem to find much info about it with Google. I think I may know how to fix it... but I want a Guru's opinion on it.

Will post back as soon as I know.

I did ask him about Messenger plus 3 before, and he assured me that he never installed the sponsor program.

I will arrange for him to delete ALL temp folders, as this is another new addition to the logfile.

The google.exe is very strange, I asked my friend to look for it in the task manager and terminate it if present. It wasn't and I've tried a few things to remove it. One being killbox. :?

Do you want me copy n paste that post for the fix, or is it informative? What I mean is, shall I get him to fix what you have listed so far with Hijackthis... Obviously adding to locate once again google.exe in the directory and delete the file via safe mode.

:)

Deleting the Temp folders is bad... deleting the files in the Temp folder is good :D

Download and install CCleaner. Don't run it yet.

ChrisRLG suggested to disable MS's Java and install Sun's Java instead, so try that.

Make sure no files are hidden:

1. Click Start.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. Select the View Tab.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
7. Click Yes to confirm.
8. Click OK.

End Task ~e5.0001 if in the Task Manager.

Fix these entries with HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MsCom32Agent] C:\WINDOWS\System32\google.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*MsCom32Agent] C:\WINDOWS\System32\google.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsCom32Agent] C:\WINDOWS\System32\google.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [*MsCom32Agent] C:\WINDOWS\System32\google.exe
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft® JavaScript® Console - {4FC00431-9368-4010-9846-841597726AC5} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\comdlg32.ocx
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: JavaScript Console - {4FC00431-9368-4010-9846-841597726AC5} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\comdlg32.ocx
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft® JavaScript® Console - {4FC00431-9368-4010-9846-841597726AC5} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\comdlg32.ocx (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: JavaScript Console - {4FC00431-9368-4010-9846-841597726AC5} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\comdlg32.ocx (HKCU)

Boot to Safe Mode and try to find and delete C:\WINDOWS\System32\google.exe

Browse to C:\Windows\Prefetch. Delete all the files in the folder, do not delete the folder itself. Empty the Recycle Bin. Run CCleaner.

Reboot Windows normally and post a new log.

Im sure I've got him to download the CCleaner awhile back too, but I'll check nonetheless. Thanks again :)

I'm sorry about the delay guy's, but the logfile has only just this second been posted to me. I have stressed the importance of not rebooting the system at all until the fix is complete and it seems we are getting nowhere.

Now we have another addition ( snapple.exe added by the FORBOT worm ). He is still unable to remove the google.exe either :x

Hmmm... might be that something not showing in the log is keeping this alive.

Download Silent Runners. Run the script. It will create a log.

Try this as well...

End Task snapple.exe.

Click Start>Run. Type in regedit. Locate these registry keys:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Delete any entry of snapple.exe and google.exe you may find.

Each user has a registry area named HKEY_USERS\[code number indicating user]\. For each user locate the entry:

HKU\[code number]\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Run\

Delete any entry of snapple.exe and google.exe you may find. Close regedit.

Disconnect from the internet, unplug the cable to the modem if you need to.

Run and scan with HijackThis. With all other browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and Fix:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MsCom32Agent] C:\WINDOWS\System32\google.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [snapple] snapple.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [snapple] snapple.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*MsCom32Agent] C:\WINDOWS\System32\google.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [snapple] snapple.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsCom32Agent] C:\WINDOWS\System32\google.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [*MsCom32Agent] C:\WINDOWS\System32\google.exe

Boot into Safe Mode.

Search for and delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\snapple.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\google.exe

Again, clean the Prefetch folder, Temp folders and Recycle Bin.

Reboot Windows normally and post a new HijackThis log along with the Silent Runners log.

Whoa... rayzer... Time Out! :)

I need the resulting log that is produced by the Silent Runners script posted.... not the Silent Runners script itself.

When you double click the script... it will run and should create a log in the folder you saved the script in.

I need the log. :D

Thank the lord for that, like I said. I've never used this before and this is what my friend sent me via e-mail

I will edit the above posts with the new logfile and the correct silent runners file :)

EDIT : Im really sorry about this, I have informed him of the mistake so hopefully he will reply soon with the correct file.

At least I get some experience with it too now :D
