Trojan Horse Downloader.Generic.WBI

Unread postby mountainbikerboarder » April 3rd, 2006, 8:48 am

I use AVG Free which detected Trojan Horse Downloader.Generic.WBI but their site does not list this one, others with similar names are there. Do you know how to proceed with the removal - the result on this was:
exe - Infected, Embedded object
txt - Infected, Archive

Thanks.

Hi MBB,

I have examined your log and can find no problems directly related to Malware so I suggest a bit of housekeeping.
  1. If you are a programmer then move to the next one otherwise
    • Click the Start button and navigate to Settings
    • Using Control Panel select Administrative Tools and finally Services
    • In the new window locate Machine Debug Manager and Right-Click
    • Select Properties and in the middle of the dialogue box change the Startup type to Disabled
    • Close Services
  2. You have Real player on your machine, I would recommend its removal using Add or Remove Programs. If you prefer to keep it then I suggest you navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\ and rename the Realsched.exe file to Realsched.exe.old.
For further information see this post
  3. Your log does not show any other obvious malware but does have entries that could safely be removed as resource hogs
With all other windows closed, start your HijackThis and click on Scan
    1. Click in the check-box to the left of each of the following entries, if found

      • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
      • O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
      • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
    2. Select Fix Checked
  4. I suspect that AVG is giving a false positive on Generic.WBI as I can find no other evidence.
    the result on this was:
    exe - Infected, Embedded object
    txt - Infected, Archive
Can you re-run AVG and give a path or the exact AVG message for the warning.
  5. Please boot to Safe mode and carry out a full Ewido scan
  6. Please
    • Post the Ewido log
    • Another HJT in Normal mode
    • Advise how the computer is behaving itself

Hi Whisperer,
Have done all that, but my Ewido has expired so not done that. The exact path in the AVG scan is:

C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet files\Content.IE5\NF5NND8W\ied[1].txt:\ied.exe - Infected, Embedded object

C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet files\Content.IE5\NF5NND8W\ied[1].txt - Infected, Archive

I ran AVG again before making your changes and it still gave the same error so came more than once. Here is the new HJT log:

Quickie whilst I check your log.

If you start your Ewido you will be able to update the database and carry out a normal full scan of your computer and consequent removal of any malware.

Please do this and post back the Ewido log

Hi MBB,

See the post above this as well.

It would appear that both of the AVG detections are in the Temporary Internet Files so
  1. Please press Start and select Settings
  2. Select Control Panel and from the dropdown select InternetOptions
  3. In the next dialogue box select the general tab and then Delete Files
  4. In the next window place a check against the offline content and click OK
Please post
  • The Ewido log
  • A new HijackThis
  • An update on the AVG detection
  • How is the computer running now?

Hi Whisperer,
Sorry for the delay - have done all that stuff but the temporary internet files were all deleted, didn't give me any option to pick any. Here is the Ewido log which I updated and ran:

Well done,

Now that the AVG problem is sorted we will turn our attention to the HJT log. You will be pleased to know that there is no evidence of any resident malware. You do have one that is not recommended and one that serves no useful purpose.

  1. You have Real player on your machine, I would recommend its removal using Add or Remove Programs. If you prefer to keep it then I suggest you navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\ and rename the Realsched.exe file to Realsched.exe.old For further information see this post
  2. You have the Java updater – jusched – activated and it has not done its job as update 6 is the current version. To manually update Java then
    1. Select Start and then Control Panel
    2. Locate the Java plug-in and double-click on the icon
    3. Select the Update tab and click the Update Now button
    4. When the update has finished, if you wish to disable the automatic(!) update then uncheck Check for updates automatically click APPLY
    5. Finally use Add or Remove programs to remove all earlier versions of Java
  3. Ewido did a good job but I would now recommend that you run it again in safe mode until it comes back with Clean
  4. Please let me know how the computer is behaving and I will then be able to post some recommendations to ensure you remain as clean as you currently are.
