HJT Log - Can you help?

Unread postby Jiber » March 27th, 2006, 7:49 am

Hello

When I run MS AntiSpyware I get a message that Rivarts.A have been detected. I remove it, but it shows up again the next time I run MSAS.

I have Spyware Doctor, Spybot Search & Destroy and avast Antivirus installed. After I detected Rivarts.A I have installed and run ewido anti-malware and Trojan Hunter. No program apart from MSAS detects Rivarts.A. Also after I have removed Rivarts.A I have problems starting Spyware Doctor from my desktop icon.

Can you help?

Here is the HJT log:

Hi Jiber... your log is clean.

MSAS has been giving False Positives of Rivart.A when Trojan Hunter installed along side it.

Uninstalling Trojan Hunter... rebooting and rescanning with MSAS should clear the problem.

Try that and let me know how it goes.

Rivarts.A

Unread postby Jiber » March 28th, 2006, 9:23 am

Hi

I uninstalled Trojan Hunter, rebooted and MSAS still says Rivarts.A is there :(

When I uninstalled TH I got a message saying all parts could not be removed, and had to be removed manually, don't know if that makes a difference, but TH was installed after I got the first security alert.

I have rebooted in safe mode and scanned with MSAS and then Rivarts.A does not show.

I have also tried installing Panda ActiveScan, but halfway in the download Avast gives a virus warning and I have to abort download.

Ok... MSAS is picking something up as a False Positive... may be another protection program you have installed.

Not sure which it would be as I've only heard of it happening with Trojan Hunter.

Though.... after doing a bit more digging... seems SpywareDoctor can cause the same False Positive.

Try uninstalling SpywareDoctor next... then doing the scan with MSAS.

And don't worry... this is a False Positive... MS does know about... quotes from Mike Treit(Msft)...

Currently signatures on registry keys and values that are known to be created by malicious software are reported as a detection for that threat, even if no other files or other traces of the threat are found.

There are plans to change this behavior in the future, which should resolve the issue.

That said, we are planning to be more stringent about what we consider a concrete detection of a threat, which is why this behavior will change in the near future for Windows Defender.

These were replies in a thread on the MS Community forums about MSAS picking up Rivarts.A when it isnt there.

What has happened is MSAS is picking up certain registry entries(most likely some innoculation or killbit entries put there by another protection program) without verifying the bad files assoiciated with Rivarts.A are really there.

So try uninstalling SpywareDoctor... reboot... and scan again with MSAS... you should hopefully get a clean scan then.

Let me know how it goes.

Rivarts.A

Unread postby Jiber » March 28th, 2006, 3:47 pm

Hi

I have tried uninstalling Spyware Doctor without luck. When I try I get a message that SD is running and when I click "OK" to stop it from running and continue uninstall the process just freeze and I have to end from Task Manager.

I have had problems earlier starting SD when double clicking desktop icon.

Guess that the Rivarts alert being a False Positive is the main thing, but I would still like to be able to uninstall SD, and perhaps install and run normally later.

Click Start>Run type in services.msc and hit enter.

In the list... look for PC Tools Spyware Doctor. Right click on it and choose properties. Stop the service and change the Startup to disabled.

Close the services console.

Click Start>Run type in appwiz.cpl. Uninstall Spyware Doctor from there.

Should work now.

Let me know how that goes :)

Hi

Did as you described, service is stopped and disabled now, but I still get the same result when I try to uninstall - message tells me SD is running and then freeze when I click "OK" :(

I did reboot and tried it twice.

Bah... sorry... my bad... forgot this...

Run and scan with HijackThis, with all browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and fix:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Doctor] "C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\swdoctor.exe" /Q

Reboot. When back in Windows hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the Task Manager... if either of these processes are active... End Task them... though they shouldnt be active now:

sdhelp.exe
swdoctor.exe

Then try to uninstall through Add/Remove Programs.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi

Did as you described and am sorted :) Have run MSAS and Rivarts does not show up.

All I am wondering now if it is OK to reinstall Spyware Doctor. I have paid for a one year license to use the program. Or do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help!

The warning will most likely come back if you reinstall SpywareDoctor. If you can live with that until MS gets a fix out... then you might as well seeing as how you've paid for it.

That or stop using MSAS for now.

Anything else?

Hi

I checked the Msft safety web site and found a Beta 2 version - Defender that I installed which uninstalled MSAS. So now I am running Spyware Doctor and Defender together which works (for now...).

Once again, thanks for your help.

No problem... be aware though... Defender uses the same techniques for ID'ing infections as MSAS does... for the moment. MS will be changing it... well... whenever :)

So its possible you still may get a FP for Rivarts.A.

Good to hear it hasnt happened since switching to Defender... just wanted to make you aware the possiblity is still there.
