MalWare or faulty HDD?

Unread postby jrcagle » April 13th, 2012, 6:12 pm

Hi,

My subscription to MalWareBytes just expired, so I thought that perhaps I would install McAfee. Trouble is, McAfee would not install. Tier2 tech support ran chkdsk and found this issue:

Index entry TableTextServiceArray.txt in index $I30 of file 379 is incorrect.
Index entry TableTextServiceSimplifiedQuanPin.txt in index $I30 of file 379 is incorrect.
Index entry TableTextServiceSimplifiedShuangPin.txt in index $I30 of file 379 is incorrect.
Index entry TableTextServiceSimplifiedZhengMa.txt in index $I30 of file 379 is incorrect.

He advised me to contact Dell about an HDD issue before trying to install McAfee.

So I thought to myself, why not try to repair first? I ran chkdsk /r and it "fixed" the entries -- but they reappeared as problems.

My thought was, Perhaps they reappeared because some malware is changing the entries deliberately. So I ran HJT. Here is the log:

Re: MalWare or faulty HDD?

Unread postby deltalima » April 17th, 2012, 5:10 pm

Hi jrcagle,

Welcome to the forum.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Please note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please do not run any scans or make any changes to the system unless I ask you too.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If after 3 days you have not responded to this topic, it will be closed, and you will need to start a new one.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please Note:
The programs I ask you to run need to be run in Administrator Mode by... Right clicking the program file and selecting: Run as Administrator.
Additionally, the built-in User Account Control (UAC) utility, if enabled, may prompt you for permission to run the program.
When prompted, please select: Allow. Reference: User Account Control (UAC) and Running as Administrator

Please tell me what
Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client
NX Client for Windows
are used for.

Is this computer ever used for business or connected to an educational network?

deltalima,

Thank you for your time. The Citrix client was specifically installed five days ago by McAfee as a part of their tech support. It allows remote desktop access. The installation therefore postdates the problem I indicated.

The NX client was installed by myself for the purpose of remote access to an academic server. That server runs Linux and was used to run Matlab code, but had no outside web access (that is, I used it to transfer files from my laptop to the server and back, and to run Matlab, but for no other purposes).

Hi jrcagle,

Operating Systems no longer supported by Microsoft
It appears you are using a computer with an unsupported Operating System.

Platform: Windows Vista SP1 (WinNT 6.00.1905)

Please see here

Support for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) ends on July 12, 2011.

An Operating System that is no longer supported by Microsoft cannot be patched to secure against any new vulnerabilities, and is therefore wide open to contracting an infection. When an OS has not been supported for some time, it is the opinion of this forum that it is pointless in trying to clean a computer using that OS, since there are so many unpatched vulnerabilities in it that it will be re-infected as soon as we've finished cleaning it of infection.

I recomend that you format your hard drive and re-install Windows to remove your infection.

This topic is now closed.
