Hi! I must first apologize since this is my second post on this issue, as I missed the three day deadline... :(
Something is still wreaking havok on my computer, causing me to be unable to launch any downloads or open most of my programs (specifically microsoft word/picture viewer) unless I am in safe mode. All of my programs have disappeared from my start menu as well. This began a few weeks ago with a sudden barrage of security pop ups saying I had was infected by multiple malware programs. The helper I had previously (not sure if I will have the same one again) had me run the following programs: Malwarebytes, combofix, Mbam, rkill, tdsskiller, unhide, FixNCR, and aswMBR. I have the logs from each of these. Thanks for taking the time to help me again. I know your time is valuable, and this is much appreciated.

Thanks, Sue

From what I can see in the logs you've supplied so far, there is no longer an active infection on your computer, which means we're probably just dealing with the after effects of your infection, though rectifying them can sometimes be as challenging as removing the infection itself.

First let's see if we can find out why your programs won't run ....

Please download Junction.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Right click Junction.zip and choose extract all...
  • When the Compressed Folders Extraction wizard opens, click Next
  • Click Browse
  • When the "select a destination" box opens, click My Computer > Local Disk (C:) > Windows > OK
  • Back at the Extraction Wizard, click Next.
  • Untick "Show Extracted Files" and click Finish
    • Click Start and type Run into the Search programs and files box, hit Enter.
    • Copy and paste the contents of the codebox below into the run box (Do Not include Code:).
    • Click OK:

Code: Select all
cmd /c junction -s c:\ >log.txt&log.txt&del log.txt

  • A command window will open and the system will be scanned. (Click Agree to the prompt)
  • Please be patient & wait untill a log file opens in notepad.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply please.

OK, your Junction log looks pretty normal, so please do the following for me .....

First

  • Click Start, then in the Search programs and files box type Notepad hit Enter.
  • This will open an empty Notepad file.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into Notepad.
Code: Select all
@ echo off

dir "%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Temp" > "%userprofile%\desktop\log.txt"

Notepad.exe %userprofile%\Desktop\log.txt
Del log.txt
Del %0

  • Click Format and ensure Wordwrap is unchecked.
  • Save as Export.bat
  • Save as file type All Files or it won't work.
  • Now double click on Export.bat to run it.
  • A file log.txt will open on your Desktop, please post the contents in your next reply.
  • Please note ... when you close log.txt both it and Export.bat will be deleted.

Then please do the following ....

Please download Farbar Service Scanner ... by Farbar and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click FSS.exe to run it. (Vista - W7 users: Please right click on FSS.exe and select Run As Administrator).
  • Select the following options ....
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press the Scan button.
  • When finished, a text file named FSS.txt will be created on your desktop.
  • Copy/Paste the contents in your reply please.

Next

Download OTL by OldTimer to your Desktop.

If you already have a copy of OTL delete it and use this version.

  • Double click OTL.exe to launch the programme.
  • Check the following.
    • Scan all users.
    • Standard Output.
    • Lop check.
    • Purity check.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList
  • Click the Run Scan button and wait for the scan to finish (usually about 10-15 mins).
  • When finished it will produce two logs.
    • OTL.txt (open on your desktop).
    • Extras.txt (minimised in your taskbar)
  • Please post me both logs.

Summary of the logs I need from you in your next post:
  • Log.txt
  • FSS.txt
  • OTL.txt
  • Extras.txt

Please post each log separately to prevent it being cut off by the forum post size limiter. Check each after you've posted it to make sure it's all present, if any log is cut off you'll have to post it in sections.

OK, let's see if we can get your Start Menu repopulated.

You can restore the defaults for the Start Menu as follows:

Next

There are a number of Services on your computer that should be running, and which are not. Let's see if we can start them ....

  • Click Start and in the Search programs and files box type Notepad then hit Enter.
  • This will open an empty Notepad file.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into Notepad.
Code: Select all
@ echo off

sc start wscsvc
sc start wuauserv
sc start bits
sc start EventSystem
sc start WinDefend
sc query wscsvc > "%userprofile%\desktop\restart.txt"
sc query wuauserv >> "%userprofile%\desktop\restart.txt"
sc query bits >> "%userprofile%\desktop\restart.txt"
sc query EventSystem >> "%userprofile%\desktop\restart.txt"
sc query WinDefend >> "%userprofile%\desktop\restart.txt"
Notepad.exe %userprofile%\Desktop\restart.txt
Del restart.txt
Del %0

  • Click Format and ensure Wordwrap is unchecked.
  • Save as Restart.bat
  • Save as file type All Files or it won't work.
  • Now right click on Restart.bat and select Run as an Administrator
  • OK any UAC prompts.
  • A report restart.txt should open on your Desktop.
  • Please post its contents in your next reply
  • please note ... the files restart.bat and restart.txt will be deleted when you close the report.

Looks like the stopped Services started OK, but I'd like to make sure they startup properly next time you boot your computer.

So ....

Reboot your computer

Then run a new scan with Farbar Service Scanner ....

  • Double click FSS.exe to run it. (Vista - W7 users: Please right click on FSS.exe and select Run As Administrator).
  • Select the following options ....
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press the Scan button.
  • When finished, a text file named FSS.txt will be created on your desktop.
  • Copy/Paste the contents in your reply please.

To re-populate your application paths (like for Office), try the method illustrated below ....

  • Download App Paths
  • Double click on AppPaths.exe to run the program.
  • Keep the program open.

In this example I'll recreate an entry for Avast antivirus program.
  • Go Start>All Programs.
  • Right click on Avast entry, click "Properties".

Image
NOTE. Make sure, you right click on Avast program, NOT on Avast folder.

  • You'll see this window:

Image

Due to the damage caused by the infection, you'll find "Target" box empty.

  • Go back to AppPaths window and find Avast entry.
  • Right click on Avast line, click "Edit".
  • A pop-up window will open:

Image

  • Highlight everything in "Path" box, right click on it, click "Copy"
  • Go back to Avast "Properties" window, right click inside "Target" box, click "Paste".
  • IMPORTANT! Add quotation marks at the beginning of the path and at the end
  • Click OK and you're done.

Image

In case, program's link shows as (empty):

Image

  • Open Windows Explorer, navigate to Avast folder in Program Files
  • Right click on Avast ".exe" file, click "Create shortcut":

Image

  • Copy that shortcut, go back to Start menu.
  • Right click on avast!Free Antivirus, click "Paste".
  • You'll see Avast shortcut recreated replacing (empty) entry.

Alternatively....
...you paste that shortcut in:
(XP) - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Avast
(Vista/7) - C:\Program Data\Start Menu\Programs\Avast

I did the FSS after a regular reboot, but App Path will not download unless I am in Safe mode.

I'm glad to see that most of the Services seem to have started OK this time, with the exception of Windows Defender which for whatever reason is not running ....

  • Click Start and in the Search programs and files box type Notepad then hit Enter.
  • This will open an empty Notepad file.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into Notepad.
Code: Select all
@ echo off

sc query WinDefend >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
sc qc WinDefend >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
Notepad.exe %userprofile%\Desktop\look.txt
Del look.txt
Del %0

  • Click Format and ensure Wordwrap is unchecked.
  • Save as Look.bat
  • Save as file type All Files or it won't work.
  • Now right click on Look.bat and select Run as an Administrator
  • OK any UAC prompts.
  • A report Look.txt should open on your Desktop.
  • Please post its contents in your next reply
  • please note ... the files look.bat and look.txt will be deleted when you close the report.

When you say that you can't download AppPath in normal mode, what exactly happens ?

Which browser are you using to download it (Internet Explorer or Firefox) ?

I see you don't appear to have an Anti-Virus program installed, have you had one in the past, and if so which one?

I am using internet explorer. When I click on any hyperlink while I'm in normal mode, nothing at all happens. I tried to right click to open in a different window, and a window will open, but with just a blank white screen. Nothing loads on the page. I had McAfee installed (I was using a trial subscription), and when my computer went haywire, it was among the programs I wasn't able to locate again.

Try running Internet Explorer with no add-ons running and see if that helps with the download problem ....

To do so ....

  • Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
  • Click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

If that doesn't improve things, try installing Firefox and see if you have the same download problems using that.

What I'm trying to establish is whether the problem is with IE or your computer.

Since you did not remove McAfee yourself, it would seem likely that your infection tampered with it.

I think before we go any further it would be a good idea to remove any possible traces of McAfee, since we don't know how much of it is left on your machine, or what affects it might have.

Please download and run this McAfee removal tool .... http://download.mcafee.com/products/lic ... s/MCPR.exe

Reboot your computer when finished

Next

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.

For 64 bit Systems
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
Code: Select all
:Folderfind
mcafee

:Regfind
mcafee

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Next

The script I had you run shows there is a general access fault with the Windows Defender service, which is most probably caused because it can't open the file, so let's see if we can find an alternate copy of the file that we can use.

  • Double click FSS.exe to run it. (Vista - W7 users: Please right click on FSS.exe and select Run As Administrator).
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the code box below into the Search: box.
Code: Select all
MpSvc.dll

  • Press the Search Files button.
  • When finished a text file named FSS.txt will be created on your desktop.
  • Copy/Paste the contents in your reply please.

Summary of the logs I need from you in your next post:
  • SystemLook.txt
  • FSS.txt

Please post each log separately to prevent it being cut off by the forum post size limiter. Check each after you've posted it to make sure it's all present, if any log is cut off you'll have to post it in sections.
