Windows 7 SP1 Malware concerns

Unread postby FingerDemon » December 28th, 2011, 9:04 am

Hello and thanks in advance for any insights or help you can provide. I have a Desktop 64 bit machine running Windows 7 SP1. I update it regularly and use Avast Virus protection. A month or so ago, I got hit with some malware or a virus. I didn't have any anti-spyware software on it when it happened. I shutdown the machine and tried to reboot, but I couldn't even boot to windows. I ran the System Restore to a previous date and it now boots, but many icons didn't appear, they were marked hidden. Also, I have a number of programs not working now and one extra harddrive I have (from a previous Windows XP install on another machine) doesn't show any files except WUTemp directory in Windows Explorer. Another program (Total Commander) does show those files, so they didn't get deleted.

This happened over Thanksgiving, so it is driving me crazy not to be able to use the machine normally. FYI, I posted to another forum that has been very helpful in the past, but didn't get a response after a month. It may be that they were swamped or I made a mistake and didn't post what they were looking for. So, I marked it Solved there and have posted here following your rules carefully.

I really appreciate that you all help people like this. At this point, even hearing that the Windows install is unsalvageable would be progress and I could make plans to save what files I can and reformat the HD.

Re: Windows 7 SP1 Malware concerns

Unread postby pgmigg » December 29th, 2011, 4:58 pm

Hello FingerDemon,

Welcome to the forum! :)

My name is pgmigg and I'll be helping you with any malware problems.

Currently I am working under the guidance of the MRU teachers and everything I post to you, must first be approved by them.
This additional review process can add some extra time to my responses, but I will post back with instructions for you as soon as possible.

Before we begin, please read and follow these important guidelines, so things will proceed smoothly.
  1. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  2. You must have Administrator rights, permissions for this computer.
  3. DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  4. DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.

Hello FingerDemon,

Thank you for your patience... :)
Happy New Year! :bigsmurf:

Please tell me, is this computer used for business purposes or connected to business network?
I need to know it - so I can provide the proper instructions.

Step 1.
Run CKScanner
  1. Please download CKScanner from Here
  2. Important: - Save it to your Desktop.
  3. Right-click CKScanner.exe and select Run as administrator..., then click Search For Files.
  4. After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
  5. A message box will verify the file saved.
  6. Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

Then:
A month or so ago, I got hit with some malware or a virus.

Could you please remember any details, names, something unusual and specific related to that bad issues?

Step 2.
Please download Unhide.exe and save it to your Desktop.
Right-click on the Unhide.exe and select "Run as administrator..." to run it.

Step 3.
OTL - Download
Please download OTL.exe by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

OTL Scan
Important! Close all applications and windows so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop.
  1. Right click on OTL.exe select "Run As Administrator..." to run it. If prompted by UAC, please allow it.
  2. Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is unchecked.
  3. Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
Leave the remaining selections to the default settings.
  4. Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  5. When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened, maximized
    • Extras.txt <-- Will be minimized on task bar.
  6. Please post the contents of both OTL.txt and Extras.txt files in your next reply.

Please include in your next reply:
  1. Answer to my question related to type of use of your computer.
  2. Do you have any problems executing the instructions?
  3. Contents of a log created by CKScanner
  4. Contents of OTL.txt log file
  5. Contents of Extras.txt log file
  6. Do you see any changes in computer behavior?

Thanks,

Hello pgmigg,

Happy New Year to you and thank you so much! This computer is just a home computer. I have a home network setup with a router to cable internet, but I don't file share or share resources. The other machines on the network are apples. In fact anymore, I mostly use this Win7 machine for surfing and playing games. I can't remember a specific site I hit or error messages from so long ago, but as I recall when it happened it locked up the machine for me opening or closing anything. If Firefox locks up sometimes I will kill it with Task Manager, but if I recall correctly this time I couldn't even do that. I had to use the power switch for a few seconds to kill power to the machine as I was afraid a virus or malware was doing something to the harddrive which was spinning even though I wasn't doing anything. I am only guessing that it was malware or a virus, but it seems like a reasonable guess. The machine wouldn't boot and I used System Restore to the last point before the issue. Many icons were hidden and I individually unhid them. But many programs still didn't work. Steam games still worked, but my son's Wizard101 client didn't for example. I tried reinstalling his game client but that didn't work either.

I ran a full scan with Avast and it highlighted the pagefile.sys of one of my old harddrives from an old XP (32 bit) install that I don't use. I was just too lazy to copy the data and reformat really so I moved the drive into the new computer. I know the pagefile.sys is important, but this drive is just file storage and XP install isn't used anymore. So, I chose the option of quarantine. But Avast gave me an error about it and I can't see the file in quarantine. On this same machine I setup an Ubuntu partition a year or so ago and that is unaffected by this problem. I don't really use it, I just wanted to learn a little about Linux. The only reason I mention it is that when I browse files with Ubuntu I can see the pagefile.sys of that old harddrive and all hidden files. But in Windows 7 all I could see was WUTemp for that whole extra HD (E: drive).

I had no trouble running the scans you asked for and here are the results:

< End of report >

Judging from the Extras file, I would guess my problem happened 11/27/2011. That would make sense, but I didn't note the time or date.

I can now see the files on the drive that was only showing WUTemp in Win 7 before (E: drive). I can also run Wizard101 and some other programs that were not working before.

So far, so good. A couple of things I wondered about. I didn't shutdown Avast during these scans. Let me know if I should do that and rerun them. Also, I noticed in OTL there is a box for Scanning based on file age and the default is 30 days. I left it as default as you requested, but since the problem originated more than 30 days ago, should I change that to a longer time period and run again?

Many thanks,

Hello FingerDemon,
I can now see the files on the drive that was only showing WUTemp in Win 7 before (E: drive). I can also run Wizard101 and some other programs that were not working before.
So far, so good.

It is nice to hear but we are not finished yet. Let continue our treatment...

Step 1.
Add/Remove Programs
I need you to uninstall some programs from your computer.
  1. Click on Start -> Control Panel and depends on View by selection in upper right corner:
    • If Category - click on Uninstall Programs.
    • If Icons - click on Programs and Features.
  2. Locate the following program:
    Java Auto Updater
    Java(TM) 6 Update 26
    StartNow Toolbar
  3. Click on the Change/Remove button to uninstall it.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each program listed.
  4. When the program(s) have been uninstalled, please close Control Panel.

Step 2.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scan
You already have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed.
  1. Please start MBAM (Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware).
You must be connected to the Internet to obtain any updates.
  2. Press the Update tab. Then press the Check for Updates...button. <<---Important!
Once any updates are installed or you get the message that you are up-to-date
  3. Press the Scanner tab...
  4. Select FULL SCAN this time... then press the Scan...button. This scan will take a while, so please be patient.
    When the scan finishes...
  5. Check all items except any items (if present) in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
  6. Let MBAM remove what it can... if there are files to be deleted on reboot... please reboot the machine so MBAM can finish the removal.
If you rebooted, then you'll need to start MBAM again.
  7. Press the LOG... tab. Locate the most current log file.
Please copy and paste the most recent log (from this new run) in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Please include in your next reply:
  1. Do you have any problems executing the instructions?
  2. Contents of the most recent mbam-log-date (time).txt log file
  3. Do you see any changes in computer behavior?

Thanks,

Re: Windows 7 SP1 Malware concerns

Unread postby FingerDemon » January 2nd, 2012, 9:52 pm

Hi pgmigg,

The only problem I had with the instructions was that I couldn't find Java AutoUpdater in the Remove Programs list. I did remove the other Java Update program and StartNow toolbar.

I updated and ran MBAM. It asked to remove 5 files (none of them were in the C:\System Volume Information\ folder). I checked them all and let it remove them with a reboot.

Here is the log.

I'm not sure it matters, but I didn't download the DataRecovery program or the Pandora Recovery program noted by MBAM until I had the initial problem with the virus/malware. I had hoped to use them to recover my missing files before I realized that they were only missing in Windows. That is when I stopped guessing at solutions and looked for help.

Thanks,

Rich (FingerDemon)

P.S. Forgot to say I haven't seen any changes in behavior, but things are working now so I guess that is a good thing.

Hello FingerDemon,

Good job! :D
Let treat you a little bit more...

Step 1.
ESET online scannner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.

  1. Firstly please Disable any Antivirus you have active, as shown in This topic.
  2. Note: Don't forget to re-enable it after the scan.
  3. Next please click on the following link to open a new window to ESET online scannner
  4. Then click on: Image
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  5. Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  6. When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  7. Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  8. Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  9. Now click on: Image
  10. The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  11. When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  12. Do not touch either the mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  13. When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  14. Now click on: Image
  15. Use notepad to open the log file located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  16. Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Step 2.
OTL Scan

  1. Do you have any problems executing the instructions?
  2. Contents of scan results from C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt file.
  3. Contents of OTL.txt log file
  4. Contents of Extras.txt log file
  5. Do you see any changes in computer behavior?

Re: Windows 7 SP1 Malware concerns

Unread postby pgmigg » January 5th, 2012, 11:54 am

Hello FingerDemon,

I'm not sure it matters, but I didn't download the DataRecovery program or the Pandora Recovery program noted by MBAM until I had the initial problem with the virus/malware. I had hoped to use them to recover my missing files before I realized that they were only missing in Windows.
Actually, the Pandora Recovery and DataRecovery are Potentially Unwanted Programs, usually designated for those that are not really harmful,
but some find them invasive enough in terms of privacy, advertisement or bundling of other programs that they are classified such.
If you don't use them, just uninstall.

P.S. Forgot to say I haven't seen any changes in behavior, but things are working now so I guess that is a good thing.
It nice to hear! :) Let continue our treatment...

OTL - Run Fix Script
You should still have OTL on your desktop.
Important! Close all applications and windows so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop.
  1. Right click on OTL.exe select "Run As Administrator..." to run it. If prompted by UAC, please allow it.
  2. Copy and Paste the following code into the Image text box. Do not include the word Code
    Code: Select all
    :OTL
    FF - prefs.js..extensions.enabledItems: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0022-ABCDEFFEDCBA}:6.0.22
    FF - prefs.js..extensions.enabledItems: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0024-ABCDEFFEDCBA}:6.0.24
    [2011/12/05 13:10:52 | 000,001,945 | ---- | M] () -- C:\Users\Richard Ward\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\4vyibd6k.default\searchplugins\bing-zugo.xml

    :Files
    C:\Program Files (x86)\StartNow Toolbar
    C:\Windows\*.tmp

    :Commands
    [EMPTYTEMP]
    [CREATERESTORPOINT]

  3. Click under the Custom Scan/Fixes box and paste the copied text.
  4. Click the Run Fix button. If prompted... click OK.
  5. OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  6. When the scan completes, Notepad will open with the scan results located in C:\_OTL\Moved Files\MMDDYYY_HHMMSS.log.
  7. Please post the contents of report in your next reply.

Please include in your next reply:
  1. Do you have any problems executing the instructions?
  2. Contents of OTL MMDDYYY_HHMMSS.log file
  3. Do you see any changes in computer behavior?
  4. Do you still face any more problems?

Thanks,

There aren't any changes in behavior and I don't have any other problems.
If you have an anti-malware program that you recommend running, I'd like to know. I used to use Ad-Aware, but I didn't know if that is the best alternative.

Thanks very much for all of your assistance.

Hello FingerDemon,

Your latest report and log appear to be clean and hopefully I can say 'All Clean'!
Before I give you instructions how to keep your computer clean and secure, you need to make a few additional steps.

Step 1.
Java Update Needed!

Attention: Print these instructions or copy them. You will be closing your browser!!

DOWNLOAD UPDATED VERSION
  1. Get the latest version (7u2) of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)... © Sun Microsystems, Inc.
  2. Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  3. Check "Accept License Agreement "
  4. Locate the entry for Windows x64 and click on the associated file name, save the file to your desktop.

INSTALL UPDATED VERSION
  1. Close all open applications (standard), especially your browser.
  2. From desktop please right-click on jre-7u2-windows-x64.exe select "Run As Administrator..." to install the newest version.
  3. Follow the on-screen directions. When installation is completed successfully, reboot your computer normally.
  4. Once the computer has been restarted, you can delete the "downloaded" installation file from your desktop.

OPTIONAL:
To prevent some unnecessary JAVA components from running when you boot your computer each time...
  1. Go to Control Panel and click on the JAVA icon.
  2. Press the Update tab and UNCHECK "Check for Updates Automatically". (You can check for updates manually.)
Reply "Never Check" to the warning prompt.
  3. Now press the Advanced tab. Press the [+] to expand the "Miscellaneous" options.
  4. UNCHECK "Java Quick Starter".
  5. Press Apply and OK, then close the Java Control Panel and exit Control Panel.

Step 2.
    Code: Select all
    :Commands
    [clearallrestorepoints]

  3. Click under the Custom Scan/Fixes box and paste the copied text.
  4. Click the Run Fix button. If prompted... click OK.
  5. OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.

Step 3.
OTL-Cleanup
  1. Right click on OTL.exe and select "Run As Administrator..." to run it. If prompted by UAC, please allow it.
  2. Press the CleanUp button.
  3. When done, you will be prompted to reboot your system to finish file removal, please select OK to reboot your computer.

If you have an anti-malware program that you recommend running, I'd like to know. I used to use Ad-Aware, but I didn't know if that is the best alternative.
Actually, your computer must have a different protection programs, but only one of each species - one antivirus, one firewall, one antimalware searcher, etc.

You have Avast as antivirus and it is a good choice.
The Malwarebytes' AntiMalware scanner is good too.

Please don't forget to update your browsers - your Mozilla Firefox 8.0.1 is out of date.

Finally, please click HERE to find a short guide to staying safer online.

Please don't hesitate to ask any additional questions.

Stay Safe! ;)
