What does everyone here think about DC projects on the internet?

I'm heavily into FaD, anyone else running a DC client?

:)

I've been running seti http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ for a few years now....
I got a bit addicted at one point and I started putting clients on any machine I could get my hands on.
including mates machines when I had them in for repairs and some servers at work.
A quad processor dual core 1.25ghz sun sparc machine will crunch quite a few units in a 24 hour period!

When a computer is waiting for the user - it has an idle time process that is called, because the processor is unable to do nothing, it has to do 'sleep' processes while it waits. This is wasted computer time.

Some people replace the 'idle' process with one from a few companies to use their computers 'when not being used for anything else' to do research for some science projects. IE Grid computing.

The one I am using at work is checking proteins in the human gene

ROSETTA
'Human Proteome Folding Project'

Some of my machines are doing:-

Research for Cancer or smallpox cures'

My son's one Analise's the radio signals received by satellites to see if any 'intelligent' noise is in them.

Oh now I understand thanks Chris,

What is the website for the Cancer research, because I would like to contribute to that for personal reasons?

Its via UD grid computing. - the link I provided - they do switch a machine between the various projects - but they are all medical connected.

You can tell them just the one project - BUT when that finishes they will not tell you and your machine will be back to doing idle.

They are linked to universities research projects - so I support them all.

You could also check out Find-A-Drug ( FaD ), Bertha!

It's linked in to Oxford University amongst others, and does the molecule calculations for Cancer, HIV, Malaria, and others!

There are always Cancer queries available, if that's all you want to run!

Have a look, anyways,

It's a kinda spinoff from Grid.org, the guy in charge of FaD developed the client a little further'

The first internet based computing project which used the THINK virtual screening software was hosted by United Devices in collaboration with the Oxford University. Funding for the original project came from the National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR) and Intel Corporation. The science for this project was directed by Keith Davies while he was an honorary research fellow at the University. Keith is a founding Director of Treweren Consultants and Find-a-Drug. The Find-a-Drug cancer project is a reflection on Keith's personal motivations and interest in continuing the work begun with United Devices developing therapies for a disease which affects one in four individuals.

Find-a-Drug has benefited from the experience of the earlier project. In part due to assistance from Intel, the latest version of THINK is approximately 40 times faster than version 1.03 used on the United Devices platform. In addition, Find-a-Drug uses geographically dispersed servers which provides superior redundancy and avoids contention downloading jobs and uploading results. The proprietary network communication software uses the standard protocol (http) with encryption of all data and results files. This provides one of the highest levels of security without compromising server performance as well as facilitating the detection of tampering with files.
