Google Redirect

Unread postby lbragg » March 3rd, 2011, 1:43 pm

Hi,

I have been working on my parents' computer for a while now. I can not seem to remove the malware that is redirecting their computer to ad sites. I have tried numerous malware removal programs, but nothing seems to work. Their computer keeps coming up clean. Is there anything else I can do or do I need to just reinstall the entire computer? Here are my DDs Logs.

Thanks in advance for your time and help. I really appreciated it.

-Laurie

Hi lbragg,

Welcome to the forum.

My nickname is deltalima and I will be helping you with your malware issue.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Please note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please do not run any scans or make any changes to the system unless I ask you too.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If after 3 days you have not responded to this topic, it will be closed, and you will need to start a new one.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

multiple Anti Virus programs

  • It looks like you are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:
    Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition
    Microsoft Security Essentials
    avast! Antivirus
    Emsisoft Anti-Malware
  • Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer.
  • Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

  • Please choose one to keep and remove all of the others.

I would recommend that you keep Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition

Reboot the coputer.

Now please run a new scan with DDS and copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Please post the GMER log along with DDS.txt and Attach.txt from the DDS scan into your next reply.

Please let me know if the computer is used for home or for business use.

Re: Google Redirect

Thanks. Its my parents' home computer. They basically use it only to surf the web despite my mom's sewing programs and my dad's yearly home tax programs that are listed.

I did remove 2 out of four of the anti-virus programs, but I can not find Avira listed in the add and remove programs list. I can not find Avira on the Add & Remove list. Is it possible that the program was partially removed and the program is no longer installed?

I will run the new logs asap.

Thanks again.

Yes, run the scans and post the logs, that will show if Avira is still installed.

That took longer than I expected. I had to post them as two separate posts.

It won't let me post the GMER results as it has too many characters. Do you want me to post it in two messages or can I submit this zip file?

Thanks,

Laurie

Hi lbragg,

I did remove 2 out of four of the anti-virus programs, but I can not find Avira listed in the add and remove programs list.

It looks like just Avast is running now so we should be ok to continue.

TDSSKiller

  • Please Download TDSSKiller.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Extract (unzip) its contents to your Desktop.
  • Double-click the TDSSKiller Folder on your desktop.
  • Right-click on TDSSKiller.exe and click Copy then Paste it directly on to your Desktop.
  • Important!: Run this fix once and once only.
  • Double click the TDSSKiller icon on you're desktop then click Start scan.
  • A box will appear saying System scan completed.
  • If any Malicious objects are found click Cure > Continue > Reboot now.
  • A log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0 24.07.2010.
  • To find the log click Start > Computer > C:.
  • Please post the contents of that log in your next reply.

Hi lbragg,

Please let me know if you are using a router to connect to the Internet.

Please follow the instructions here to use OpenDNS.

Now reboot the computer and then let me know if the redirection has stopped.

It is a wireless router from the cable company. What exactly is OpenDNS? Do I need to setup an account per the instructions on the top of their webpage?

Thanks again,

Laurie

OpenDNS are a free alternative DNS provider. DNS services are normally provided by your ISP but my suspicion is that your router has been reconfigured by malware to use rogue DNS servers that cause the redirects.

There is no need to create an account, follow the instructions in the link to use their servers, it is straightforward to change back again after we have tested.

If we need to reset your router back to the default settings, do you still have the information required to configure it to work with your ISP?

Please let me now the make and model of the router.

I have been having a hard time getting the computer to accept this Opendns. I put in the information and the system overrides it. Its Broadband connection with Verizon. The router is model 327W.

Is there something else I can try?

I did, however, flush the cache for the DNS, Webpages and Java.

Please let me know what the settings are that are changed back to. I would expect it to be set to automatic.

Are you logged in as an Administrator?

Do you have the information needed to set the router up to work with the ISP if we reset it?
