Description:
About three days ago I was on ch131.com and apparently clicked on something I shouldn't have, and my computer has NOT been okay ever since. Random websites appear and it looks like they're going to porn.org, viagra.com, and other sites. Then when I try to look things up on Google, random sites will appear. At first it was saying "Internet Explorer says not to open this page" or something like that, which is ridiculous since I was using FireFox. My computer started running very very slowly, and in the toolbar there was a new icon that was white and green, and it showed fake Windows messages telling me to install anti-virus programs, even though I had Avast! Next, more windows would pop up telling me that I needed to download various programs, and it would look like they were running some sort of screening tool. I knew this was probably a virus, but Avast! couldn't find it, and it somehow was able to turn off my Avast! so it showed up as unsecured. I downloaded and ran MalwareBytes and Spybot, and they found a few things, included something called WhiteSmoke, but I'm still having problems with random sites popping up and my computer running slowly. I have Windows XP, and the Windows task bar on the bottom has changed as well, and is now the light grey old-school toolbar. Also, my homepage changed, and Bing was set up as my primary search engine on my Mozilla toolbar. Over the last few days I've run Avast!, Spybot and MalwareBytes several times, and they have still not been able to fix this. If you could help me I'd be SO thankful!!

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
The process is not instant.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • Follow the steps I describe in the order I asked if at all possible,
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.
  • DO NOT install new programs while we are fixing this machine.
  • Be sure to use the subscribe button to receive notification by Email that you have been replied to.
If I do not hear from you in 3 days from my last post this topic will be closed. You will need to start another.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

HiJackThis
Run hijackthis and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.
Close all other windows and browsers except HJT before clicking on Fix Checked

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local
O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll
Close that.

TDSSKiller - Rootkit Removal Tool
Please download the TDSSKiller.exe by Kaspersky... save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
  1. Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista - W7 users: Right-click and select "Run As Administrator".
If TDSSKiller does not run... rename it. Right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. ektfhtw.com).
If you don't see file extensions, please see: How to change the file extension.
  2. Click the Start Scan button. Do not use the computer during the scan!
  3. If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  4. If malicious objects are found, they will show in the "Scan results - Select action for found objects" and offer 3 options.
    • Ensure Cure (default) is selected... then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
    • If Cure is not offered as an option, choose Skip.
  5. A log file named TDSSKiller_version_dd.mm.yyyy_hh.mm.ss_log.txt will be created and saved to the root directory. (usually Local Disk C:).
  6. Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.
If, for some reason, you can't locate the text file to paste into your reply, just tell me, but DO NOT run the program a second time.

I downloaded ESET online scanner. It didn't have the same options that you mentioned, though. There wasn't a scan button, just a start button. There wasn't a search box either. When it finished installing, the two main options were "Remove found threats" or "Scan archives." Below that, in advanced settings, there were the following options:
Scan for potentially unwanted applications
Scan for potentially unsafe applications
Enable Anti-Stealth technology
and under Current scan targets, the option
Use custom proxy settings.

Does that sound familiar? Not sure what to do exactly.
